Some cool holes, but a frustrating layout overall
I'm not a huge hitter, but at this course I swear I should play without a driver. The course feels very narrow and unless you can shape shots in both directions with good control, the driver is often way too long of a club even for me who averages a good drive at around 285.
Holes 17 and 18 are very nice though, 18 is one of the coolest holes around. It takes me a solid drive and a great 3 wood to reach it in 2, and even then just somewhere up around the green chipping is a great result as the green is uphill and protected. Some other holes are pretty cool as well, but 18 stands out by a long shot.
One of my local favorites
Crossgates is a visually beautiful course. You have holes that run adjacent to the river. Holes play with the elevation changes nicely. I like that you aren't going back and forth from hole to hole, New fairway grass is an improvement and I really enjoy the greens. Hole 9 and 18 test your patience.
Some of the newer homes are a little close for comfort, but hey, they knew what they were buying when they bought it. Course does encourage you to grip it and rip it. Very good grass and maintainence for a public course.
Can run slow on weekends if beginners are ahead of you, lost balls are almost guaranteed with an errant shot.
Well worth the drive
This course is a steal at $49 on Sunday morning at 9am. The course layout along the Conestoga River provides some beautiful scenery as well as some demanding holes. Playing for the first time, I wasn't sure of some of the yardages so I hit irons off 8 of 14 tees. Next time that will be cit down to about 4. The fairways are great and Greens are top notch. Fast but true, they haven't suffered the type of wear and tear this late in the season usually brings. The rough was thick but manageable. The 18th hole is a monster requiring some distance off the tee, accuracy for the 2nd and some great putting on the green. I would recommend this to everyone and will be back to play it again. Great job by the staff with all the rain this area has had in the last month (about 11" of rain). No fairways along the river were washed out or damaged. Go play this course.
comfortable
This is a comfortable course located within a residential community right next to Millersville University. It isn't long and generally puts a premium on accuracy, not length. However two par 5 holes on the second nine (10 and 18) didn't seem to fit the general design of the course with medium length par 3's and short par 4's. If I lived nearby I would go there occasionally to play.
Great shape
For December 1st the course was in great shape. Leaves had been collected and were not an issue. The greens were fast and true. I also highly recommend the Copper Hill Cafe in the clubhouse. Very friendly staff and good food with nice specials on both food and drink.
Great Golf Course
Course is in excellent shape for this time of year. Greens really fast, but surprisingly smooth. Always a challenge at Crossgates. Recommend highly!
Great lay out
Played many times always in great shape playing there again on 12/5/17
Some holes don’t need driver position is key
Worth the hour drive
We play here 2-3 times a year and never a bad day. Course is always in nice shape. Pace of play is never an issue (we only play weekends). Eighteen is probably one of the best finishing holes of all the courses we play. Very good bloody marys.
Great course for the price
Course is in great shape every time I've been there. Lots of doglegs that require a well placed tee shot. The par five 18th is one of my favorite finishing holes.
Worth the trip
Good course at a great price. Better maintenance of the course would make this one a must play. As it was, the course was in decent condition and the price made it a great value.
Good shape for late season
For a late season round, I was really pleased with the condition of the course. Because of recent rain and even some drizzle the morning before I played, the course was pretty damp. However, the greens were in great shape and ran true and fast. Some of the groups ahead of us needed to do a better job of repairing ball marks, but that's true on most courses anymore unfortunately. The tee boxes were good and level, and the rough was thick. The course itself is short, so we played the back tees. Several holes require shots to be made to specific locations due to doglegs, which put me at a disadvantage having never played there, but the tee boxes were marked with distances to the corner, to the end of the fairway, etc. The rangefinder was also useful. Elevation changes into greens require an extra club or two on some approaches. The clubhouse has a relatively new pub with some good outdoor seating. A good menu, the food was decent and reasonably priced.
Need to re-design # 18
The entire course is great, but hole #18 is a bit too daunting and cpuld be re-designed to still be difficult but doable without killing your score the way it does now. Just a suggestion.
Nice little course
I was visiting Lancaster and played here. I normally play whites but at around 6,200 blues were within my range. It was wet but still I had a good round. Despite renting clubs, I adapted to them quickly and scored a 78. I look forward to playing here again!
Hardest review to write
I played a practice round here 5 days before a high school tournament. LOVED IT !
Then I showed up for the tournament. The pin locations for this were the worst spots I have ever seen in my life. Unfair on so many levels and were very poorly evaluated for a tournament. The course conditions were an 11/10 and as always friendly people. But man , those pin locations were ridiculous
Brought a friend
We got a great rate. Course was in very good shape. I did notice evidence of aeration on some of the greens. Started at 2:30 (we let a couple of singles through) and it was getting dark as we finished but we had a great time . We played from the gold tees which were level and well maintained unlike a number of golf now courses. Would recommend!!
Interesting and Challenging Course
Having played in a league at Crossgates during the past two summers, I have become quite familiar with the course. The layout is interesting, and the variety of elevations makes this a fun course to play. Always the staff have been friendly and helpful; a starter and course marshall usually are there to help keep the pace of play moving which I appreciate. The Crossgates app for the phone enables a golfer to be aware of all the specials, and the rates are very fair for the Lancaster area. As for amenities, I like the Copper Hill Restaurant but wish the service could be faster. I play many different courses in the area, and Crossgates is one of my favorites. If you haven't played it yet, give Crossgates a try!
