Grand View Golf Club
About
Grand View Golf Club in North Braddock is one of the area's most challenging layouts. The course's 160 acres were carefully carved from a woodland hilltop. From its perch, the golf course overlooks the Mon Valley with views stretching to the Edgar Thompson facility, Western Pennsylvania's first and last major steel mill. The distinctive layout will test your creative shot-making skills. It may seem relatively short at 6,111 yards from the back tees but it feels much longer thanks to the rolling fairways and undulating greens. The tight fairways are lined with cliffs, brush, and trees, leaving little room for error. You should also be prepared for forced carries and tricky doglegs. Grand View Golf Club can be punishing for the low handicapper, but high handicappers will find this course to be a unique test of their skills.

hole 14 - par 3( 90 foot elevation drop) Photo submitted by vdlemonade on 04/22/2013
fairways and greens great shape
grand view is a placement coarse, not just grab your driver. placement is everything. greens are fast but fair. 16 is the worst hole, straight up a hill and ball will roll back down fairway
Short Course but Difficult
This was my first time playing the "Monster on the Mon", and I was pleasantly surprised. When you think of Braddock, PA you dont think of golf courses, but this was a fun 18 that I played. The course is very short. I believe I used my driver on just two of the holes. It's also extremely tight. If you spray at all, there is a good chance you're going to lose a ball. Well worth the price that I paid on Golfnow. Also, the carts had the GPS technology which was fun.
great course poor customer service from golf staff
Golf staff very rude, also paired us with out even telling us.
Bar/restaurant staff are great!
Overbooked
The course was nice and the staff friendly as usual but they were overbooked and added people into the back 9. This included placing a rude, slow foursome in front of our twosome and behind a slow paced threesome. It was completely nonsensical to the point we didn't finish the last 3 holes. Horrible tee time management.
Truly "Grand" View
Great course for college students to escape the city. Within 15 minutes of oakland, Grandview is one of my favorites for college students. Interesting layout and well maintained course, with some particularly interesting holes and some great views of the river and the city of pittsburgh. Some of the holes are very similar and seem repetitive, but its perfect for an afternoon or weekend outing for students and locals.
great layout
Greens were aerated so what can I say besides I know it has to be done, but I am glad I didn't pay full price thanks to this website.
Target golf
I played the course in mid summer and it was in country club condition. You will pay the price if you swing for the fences so gear it down and play smart golf and you will enjoy it. Fantastic views this is one of my favorite courses.
fall golf conditions need attention
Currently they had just airated their greens. But what they didn't tell us is that there is a 1/8" of sand over every green leading to very slow, horrible putting conditions. while their were holes in the greens. they very few were filled with sand. almost as if they airated and then just dumped the sand on them without trying to fill the holes. I hope this gets fixed soon since it is a pretty good course.
Grand View is built essentially on a mountain slope. with the holes going up and down the hillside, you get very tight fairways and many blind tee shots. The golf course is very target golf orientated. It is not the longest golf course in the country. just pushing 6000 yds. from the back tees (black) but with many of the fairways being no more than 20 yds wide it is better to leave the driver in the bag on this course. We did take a cart and with the gps included in it, it made it very cumbersome. it would reduce speed on steep grades and essentially turn off if you were even slightly off the path on some spots or too close to the green even though you aren't past the cart stakes. I know why they have it, but from a customer experience position it isn't great.
Challenging
I lost some balls but it makes you play smart golf and the view is terrific.
Always in good condition
Course has always been a challenge. But always in good condition. Don't play if you aren't hitting your irons straight. YOu will lose a sleeve or two.
It's an adventure
This course is not for the faint of heart. Need to hit it straight, not for older folks, cannot drive or walk to the ball more than half the time. Pretty view, close to downtown Pittsburgh.
A Very Unique Course
This course will be one of those your either like a lot or hate. It's unlike anything I've ever played. It's a short course with very narrow fairways, with a cliff on one side and a steep hillside on the other on many of the holes. It's target golf all the way. But if you are errant with your tee shots, be prepared to do a lot of walking on very steep hillsides and your calves will certainly be sore the next day. The greens and fairways are well maintained.
I've always like Grandview, but the new golf carts make it hard to like it any more.
Fun, challenging course, but the new golf carts with auto shut off when you leave the path make it too slow and too hard on the body.
Great Course, A Few Observations
Grand View is a great, challenging course that I enjoy playing. The course is always in great condition.
A few things though:
1. While the carts are nice with GPS, if you find yourself in a restricted area it forces you to reverse out...which often times would be much faster and easier to continue forward out of the area.
2. The sudden slow down of the carts when approaching a steep grade on the cart path can be dangerous. It is a very abrupt slow down and jerks you forward in your seat.
3. Other players-many times slow groupings do not allow faster players to 'play through'. On one occasion I even saw a 'five-some' and on another occasion I saw a 'six-some'. The six-some didn't allow my twosome to play through till hole 15, which by then, what was the point?
This course has great features
Grand View Golf Club is a unique, challenging layout of eighteen superbly designed golf holes that will test the shot-making skills of the accomplished golfer, yet it is kind to the average golfer who simply wants to enjoy a pleasant, relaxed round of golf. Carved out of a 160-acre mature woodland hilltop, Grand View offers spectacular panoramic views overlooking a wide expanse of the Mon Valley, including the Edgar Thompson facility, the first and last major steel mill in Western Pennsylvania.
This distinctive, 18 hole, Par 70, 6,111 yard layout gracefully winds its way along tree-lined fairways and undulating greens atop Matta's Hill.
The Pro Shop offers a complete line of golf clothing, accessories and golf equipment.
A must when playing in Pittsburgh area
I enjoyed the "grand views"....seeing the steel mills and Kennywood Park. It reminds me of the old time Pittsburgh. My whole group enjoyed the course and we will come back for sure.
The course condition is actually between maintained and pristine.
Staff is great!!
Definitely worth a visit!
I was in Pittsburgh traveling for business and signed up for a twilight round. I ended up having a great time on a really nice course with magnificent views and really friendly people. The course is narrow and very hilly so pick your clubs and shots carefully!
I will absolutely return here for another round the next time I am in the area.
Better with a guide....
We played 9 holes blind as a twosome and then joined another who knew the course. Many blind shots and significant elevation changes. Driver is rarely needed if you are even moderately long, but ability to work the ball both directions is! Fairways and tees were good, greens and surrounds were very well kept and true. GPS is high quality and a must, but sometimes calculates around bends rather than on straight line. Staff was cordial and Sunday brunch deal after golf can't be beat. Bonus is wildlife, no traffic, no housing and some cool views. I'd play there again anytime. ps...if you spray it some, bring extra ammo and new spikes, as you will likely be trekking up and down some hills.
Awesome
great course, very nice greens, the overall course was in great shape
Be careful
Tough course if you are a right to left hitter. Its relatively short so hit enough club off the tee to give you a good wedge shot to the green. The greens are in nice shape, roll well and putt very trrue
