Grand View Golf Club

About
Grand View Golf Club in North Braddock is one of the area's most challenging layouts. The course's 160 acres were carefully carved from a woodland hilltop. From its perch, the golf course overlooks the Mon Valley with views stretching to the Edgar Thompson facility, Western Pennsylvania's first and last major steel mill. The distinctive layout will test your creative shot-making skills. It may seem relatively short at 6,111 yards from the back tees but it feels much longer thanks to the rolling fairways and undulating greens. The tight fairways are lined with cliffs, brush, and trees, leaving little room for error. You should also be prepared for forced carries and tricky doglegs. Grand View Golf Club can be punishing for the low handicapper, but high handicappers will find this course to be a unique test of their skills.

hole 14 - par 3( 90 foot elevation drop) Photo submitted by vdlemonade on 04/22/2013
Course conditions are atrocious!!! Like cut the grass on the tee box!
Very interesting layout
Golf course does have a pretty cool view. I had an impromptu 6 person scramble in front of me which slowed things down a lot. Course is tough you can go all day without using driver. Course has a lot of potential but the conditions were a little rough. Tee boxes weren’t totally level and divots all over the fairway. For the money though it was pretty fun. One of the par threes features a 120ft drop which is cool.
Drought Conditions + Silly Layout + Hackers = Long Day
At its best, if the course (tee boxes/fairways/hazards/greens) is well maintained, and the pace of play and 14 or so blind shots are well managed, this course could potentially be allowed to shine as the quirky borderline silly cliffside track that it was originally designed to be.
Currently it is not at its best. It is closer to being at its worst.
A course with this much "character" requires more attention in ways that other courses may not.... ie A. Rangers managing the infinite lost balls that carom off hillsides and onto adjacent fairways or tee shots that spray 1-2-3 fairways over. B. Watering of the 45 degree angle reverse-banked "fairways" such that a ball won't bounce off of them like its been launched into a parking lot. C. More attention to tee times, because when playing 18 holes laid out on under 100 acres, a lot can go wrong even if you play great. Which I did not.
I shot an 85, a few strokes above my average, and enjoyed the unique challenges of some holes especially the par 3s, but found playing 18 tee shots defensively exhausting and too reliant on lucky bounces (and finding that one remaining patch of grass in the fairway) than skilled shots.
If you find yourself here, leave your driver in your car, and maybe leave yourself there too.
Needs some work
Unfortunately, the course is in need of some maintenance. A number of fairways are dry and burnt out and some of the tea boxes were just a wreck. Other than that, it is a challenging course.
Definitely Grand Views
The course would be worth the views alone. The layout is fun but challenging. Holes are well designed. Greens were a little inconsistent, and it is easy to lose balls, but I had a good experience.
