Ted Rhodes Golf Course
About
Ted Rhodes Golf Course sits on the Cumberland River's North Nashville banks, and was originally named the Cumberland Golf Course, after that body of water, back when it only had nine holes, first laid out way back in 1953. A 1992 redesign added nine more holes, and nowadays golfers get 18 holes of links-style golf, complete with lakes and bunkers that make for good times. Big greens provide big targets for approaches on this walkable golf course.
The par-72 Ted Rhodes Golf Course measures 6,669 yards from the Blue tees, and offers a fourth set of tees that play to 5,010 yards for the ladies. A round of golf kicks off big on a par-5 hole that comes in at 555 yards from the Blue tee, one of two long holes, with the back nine also opening on a 534-yard hole. With that in mind, the golf course concludes with a relative whimper, on a par-4 hole that measures just 432 yards from the Blue tee.
Something to look for on the Ted Rhodes Golf Course is the fauna: Turtles, fish, muskrats and beavers all make their homes in the golf course's lakes and river.

Hit or miss
The course itself is pretty great. Challenging, and the greens are pretty hard to read. But the pace of play was ridiculous. There were 7 people in 1 grouping and 6 in another. I believe it was a group of 20/25 people playing together for money, but they were unbelievably slow, inconsiderate, and were actually jerks.
The staff was not very nice either. At least the two guys at the front weren’t. The food bar guy and golf cart guy were cool, but the, who I’m assuming was the manager and assistant manager, we’re fairly disrespectful. I understand a busy day could cause some tension, but it’s your job and I’m sure it wasn’t your first busy day. The manager was okay I suppose, but the other guy was not.
Nice Recovery
Three weeks ago this course was closed for 6 days following massive flooding in Nashville. It has rebounded nicely. My 4-some enjoyed the course with one recommendation, include some type of course map with the score card. It was our first time on course and we unknowingly found creeks and water. The large greens were really nice; putts seemed to roll true. Kudos to the Nashville Park service; we also played a fun round at McCabe Golf Course
Good Local option
Fun round, fair but also challenging. No driving range but that staff was very accommodating.
Ted Rhodes Review
The Ted Rhodes Golf Course is an enjoyable Nashville Public option. The front 9 gives golfers from different skill levels an opportunity to stay in the hole regardless of their path of the tee. The back 9 forces some shot shapes that and distances that may be difficult for the high handicap. The staff is friendly. The atmosphere is fun and relaxed. Pace of play can get slow at times on the weekend. Conditions are fair. Overall a fun place and a great place to grow your golf game.
We played it
We had a lot of rain last week. The greens were extremely slow compared to how they are in the summer.
But, it was ok.
Fun Round
The back 9 had a lot of standing water because we had 3 consecutive days of rain 2 days ago. This is still one of my favorite layouts and I wished I had walked it. The greens were in great shape as usual. Looking forward to playing there again when it’s drier
Links style layout, lots of water
Challenging layout with lots of water and some really interesting holes. This is a “links-style” course but the abundance of water tightens up the course somewhat. Hard to rate the condition of tees and fairways since the Bermuda is still dormant, but the condition of the greens was excellent. The course is somewhat flat and walker-friendly. I’ll make it a point to come back here during my next trip to Nashville, hopefully when everything is green. .An excellent value.
Rude staff
Staff is very rude. At check-in, gave Audie at the desk my name and was told that I didn’t have a tee time. I told him that it was booked last minute through Golf Now and was told that I needed to provide the email confirmation from Golf Now. By mistake, I had deleted the email, completely my fault. Offered to show my ID and was told again that I had to provide the confirmation email. I have never had to provide proof of confirmation anytime I have ever booked via Golf Now, and when I told him that, he said “you’ve never played here then.” Not the first time that they’ve been rude to me or my wife at this course. I will be calling Metro Nashville Parks and Recreation as well to complain about the rudeness that seems to be a part of the culture at Metro Nashville golf courses.
As much as you could ask for from a muni
While Nashville doesn't have much when it comes to public golf, it does offer a system of municipal courses, including McCabe, Two Rivers, Shelby, and Harpeth Hills. Of the Nashville Metro Courses, Ted Rhodes is among my favorite.
First off, the greens are generally amazing for a public course. Fast and in good condition. You couldn't really ask for much more.
The design is above average, offering some distance when playing from the back tees and a considerable number of water features (especially when compared to other publics). If you're a novice golfer looking for a fun and easy round, there are better Metro options, but if you're looking for something of a challenge while still being able to score, this is a great option.
Issues worth noting:
- No driving range (there's a short range but you need your own balls)
- Limited food and beverage options
- You will often have to deal with the riff-raff that a muni course has to offer. While pace of play is generally good, don't be surprised if you're hit into, someone cuts in front of you, or something else unexpected happens.
Overall, I'd recommend Ted Rhodes to just about anyone. It's always fun, is in good condition, and requires you to bring many aspects of your game.
Slow Play Capital of Golf
If you like rounds that take 5 hours then this is your place. Tax dollar paid employees could care less. Great condition and layout. Terrible management and patrons
Incredible Course in Fantastic Condition
First time playing this course and was extremely happy with the course. The setup is awesome with some tricky par 3s and some very cool risk/reward par 5s. Every single putting green was perfect and couldn't find any imperfection on the putting surface. The only knock on this course is the driving range is irons only and is only 200 yards long. Besides that Ted Rhodes is a fantastic course and for the price you can't beat it!
For Regulars/Locals Only
If you like 5 and a half hour rounds, playing behind several groups of five, in a mud bog, this is the course for you. Locals playing some sort of money game. Should have been warned!
Very nice municipal course
It's Winter. The fairways are brown and the greens are green and in beautiful shape. They roll true. There is a lot of water on this course, every hole has some that can come into play. Every hole has sand in play also. However, it is maintained very nicely. The staff is very friendly and courteous. A great value, especially with Winter rates. Definitely would play again. I am sure Spring will be beautiful.
