The Golf Club at Hawks Prairie - The Woodlands

About
Located just a few minutes north of Olympia, the Golf Club at Hawk's Prairie is one of the South Sound's most popular golf destinations. The club has two 18-hole courses, each with a completely different layout. You can choose between the classic Scottish design of the Links Course or the Woodlands Course with its idyllic landscape of dense, old growth forest. The Woodlands is what you would expect from a Pacific Northwest golf course, with sprawling fairways that snake through towering trees and large, multi-tiered greens. Ponds and wetlands come into play throughout and there are strategically placed bunkers protecting most of the greens. In addition to offering both a challenging and scenic round, the course was also ranked as one of the Top 75 Most Affordable Golf Courses by Golf Digest.

Poor upkeep
White flowers litter the fairways and rough. Tee boxes were as long as the rough on some holes. No scorecard on cart or first hole. Overall, Oki knows better and is charging 40-60% too much for this experience.
Fun day with lots of rain
We had the course to ourselves. The PNW drizzle had scared everyone away. The course itself was dry and beautiful. Only complaint is all the grass in the bunkers.
Hadn’t played here for a while
Course was in good shape, pace was good although it was a Friday. Hadn’t been here for 7-8 years but wanted a change of pace so this was it. Looking forward to the next time already except it will be on the links course.
What a mess
This used to be a nice track. Now it's a goat ranch at best. Tee box to green is a joke. Nothing is maintained and a total swamp. All the cut grass was left in the fairway and was all over the greens. Also throw in No Marshall & no Beverage Cart that makes for super slow play and a crappy experience. Just another Oki mess of a course. Don't waste your time or money.
Fun challenging course but.
The course is tight, long, and challenging but the Fairways felt like you were in short rough.
Must ride to play this course
I don’t like riding cart when playing, but strongly recommand to ride this course. Distance between holes are really far, so i recommand Link course if you are golfer who likes to walk like myself.
Unmanaged
Arrived a half hour for my 11:20 tee time, was told cart shortage would be a few minutes . told to come back in 15 minutes and cart would be waiting. Came back told no carts would be one shortly. 15 minutes past tee time was told that it would probable be another hour for a cart. Cancelled my tee time and was told I wold get my money back. That day was the worst managed course activities I had ever seen.
First time in a looong time
First time playing here in about 17years, back when it was Meriwood (and Vicwood). Couldn't really remember the course prior to arriving.
Upon arrival, everything is at the Links clubhouse. We went to the Woodlands (Meriwood) and it wasn't open. No issues there, makes sense. Driving range at the Woodlands ok, but nice being right by a practice green and fairly close to 1st tee.
The nines are switched and most likely have been for years. And there are now homes all around the course, which is mainly why i couldn't remember much, and my golf memory is really good especially when it comes to lay-up areas, green slopes, positions, etc.
Tees were ok, somewhat sparse. Fairways i thought were good. There were some holes on the back nine that looked like they hadn't been mowed in easily 4-5 days which was odd. Bunkers were spot on compared to some of the prior reviews. fairly unkempt with weeds growing, but thankfully i didn't have to play out of any. I was concerned about greens based on a prior review, but was pleasantly surprised. I thought the condition and speeds were excellent. i bet they rolled around 9.0-9.5 with some a bit quicker as the day progressed since we teed off at 6:30am.
There were a few holes that i'd like to play again, not really knowing (remembering) where to lay -up, and that was even with a rangefinder. should have taken the time to drive up and check it out but there was a group playing somewhat quickly behind us, even though we were cruising along. But you can't knock this against the course and this rating.
I pulled on old old Meriwood scorecard out of my collection and recalled some of the holes after the round. With all the homes now around, i remembered #2 (used to be #11) and #13 (which used to be #4...waterfall hole). It felt more open, in my opinion, when there were trees. For some reason houses make it look tighter, when in reality there is probably more room now if you need it off the fairways.
this has to be a tough walking course, because there were many lengthy drives from green to next tee, but we saw plenty of walkers out there.
All in all good course, and will definitely be back.
Horrible greens
From a 7 handicap golfer:
If you like putting on horribly slow and bumpy greens with what looks like two blends of grass -this is your course. Worst greens in all of Thurston County by far. No putt rolls true and all bounce right off the start. These greens are a joke.
The bunkers were equally as bad. All bunkers on the course (there are alot) were unkept , full of weeds, and also full of rocks and dirt.
This was the first round we've played here....and our last.
Fantastic course and friendly staff!
Just had a wonderful time at the Woodlands Course. The staff were friendly and the course was beautiful! Can't wait to go back!
Great day of golf
The staff is friendly only problem we encountered was that there were more golfers than they had carts for... Had to wait for a cart but eventually we did get out with a cart... Courses in excellent condition... It's a great test for you golfing skills.
Hasn’t Aged Well
Last time I played this course would have been in 90s when it was Merriwood. Times have changed. Most holes haven’t aged well. Lots of overgrown areas. But a Saturday round walking in 3:45 is pretty nice. I’d play it again.
Get a cart.
Strange narrow greens were a new experience. Great course layout not for the meek. Long stretches between some holes.
Great greens....terrible bunkers
If you stay out of the bunkers and in bounds, you'll be playing on some great turf! Fairways and rough are in good shape. Greens are in excellent shape.....but that SAND TRAPS. I know with Covid-19 we can't have raked in the traps. That's not my complaint. This complaint is not just limited to Hawks Prairie but several courses....the bunkers need help! They are full of weeds, debris, more weeds, unkept, weeds, did I mention weeds? I'm not sure if they are short-staffed, but if they aren't then I'd say weed out two holes worth of bunkers a day and be caught up in less than 2 weeks! You can do it and this course will look pristine!
Great greens and fairways
I love playing this course. There are two great courses at Hawks. The Woodlands course has beautifully kept greens and fairways, my only complaint is there are some bunkers(not all) that are not taken care of and have rocks and other debris in them. Great course overall
