Great conditions, but still way overpriced
No complaints about the course. The turf was excellent tee to green, and some fun unique holes. My beef is with the cost at 4 PM on a Thursday. Nearly every course advertises riding rates on their website, but not Indian Canyon. Apparently the $45 is to walk, not mentioning an absurd $27 cart fee. No muni outside of Torrey Pines should cost $72 that late on a weekday afternoon.
Worth the cost?
Scenic view over-looking Spokane. Tons of elevation, narrow fairways and tricky green-all of which were in excellent condition. This is not an easy course and would say the slope rating should be higher than what is listed. There had been a tournament prior to our 3:30 start time, so the greens were fast. There was almost no one else playing, but for $61, I understand why. Lots of jets taking off from GEG. I think there are better value courses to play. Spokane County has to get the prices down if they want people to come out!
A historic comeback
Indian Canyon is one of the most important municipal courses west of the Mississippi. Designed by H. Chandler Egan (of Pebble Beach fame), it is a rare publicly accessible, affordable, largely preserved classic course. Owned by the City of Spokane, it is coming out of a multi-million dollar update that includes a new irrigation system, some tree paring and adjustments to five greens. The hilly layout swoops up and down the sides of a canyon, and a few holes have some exceptional naturally fairway contours. All in all, it is an unusually sophisticated course as city amenities go. It's good to see receiving its due attention.
Have played this course numerous times over the past 25 years. Today we were totally amazed at the fact that the maintenance crew left plugs from aeration, and sand in front of several of the holes, making it impossible to roll on. We thought we should have been informed that the greens had been punched and that the clean up wasn't complete. Perhaps a bit of a discount? We had to wait on several shots, so that clean up, which should have already been done, could be finished ... kind of. Frankly we were shocked. I guess September isn't the month to golf in Spokane.
Course Like a Fine Wine
Course overall in great shape. Tees, boxes, fairways, greens, bunkers & cart paths all maintained quite well. This is the extent of the good experience we had. Marshalls were pushing us from 4th tee on through the round even though we stayed consistently 1-2 full holes ahead of following group. None of our group was drinking, being abusive or disrespectful of the marshalls or the course. We took the high road. Start-to-finish time of round was 3hrs 51min. Told head pro of our experience & he said we finished in what they considered was the allotted time for their course! Lots of other places to play in Spokane area so we’ll leave this one alone until reviews get better regarding their treatment of customers. Never had to leave negative review before...sad that had to be here in my home town!
I am sure that is not the entire story...
Best value in Spokane
I absolutely loved it.
I think this is a nice course with many challenges. Trees are everywhere, greens are fast with lots of slope. The back 9 plays more open and is more fun as well. There were some rough areas in the fairways and greens but nothing too bad.
I actually enjoyed myself here more than I did at Qualchan. Favorite holes were 1,10, 11, & 16.
Classic older course with lots of hills & valleys
If you are in the Spokane area this is a MUST play. One of the most challenging and yet enjayable courses around. Has a very classy throwback feel. So much terrain that it is practically impossible to walk the course. Love it!
Fun course. Great condition. Have played only from the mens whites. Big hitters will love this course with wide open fairways and short par 4 and 5's. Generally small challenging greens. Very playable.
