The Springs Course at The House on the Rock Resort and Golf Club
About
The Springs Course is the original course at the House on the Rock Resort & Golf Club. There is also the North Nine Course, which was added more than 20 years after the first course. Despite the difference in age and length, both golf courses provide rounds that are as scenic as they are challenging. The Springs is a Robert Trent Jones design, although the lush terrain of the Wisconsin River Valley also deserves credit. The course sweeps along the valley floor and incorporates Jones signature elements, including narrow landing areas and plenty of bunkering. Water hazards also come into play on almost every hole. Two notable holes are the ninth and 18th, par 4s that wind back to a massive double green guarded by water on one side and sand traps on the other.

Great layout
As with most Robert Trent Jones designed courses, the layout is great. No weird holes or the like. It is in a beautiful setting in the hills.
The reason for the less than top rating is the condition of the course. Many of the greens had bad spots and the green edges were weed covered. It just seemed that for a very nice high quality course, it lacked care. Most of the sand traps were also in poor shape. We liked playing the course, our first time, and would likely go back.
Greens are in horrible shape
It’s sad that the owners cannot maintain this storied Robert Trent Jones course. Every green is covered with burned out patches, it looks like there has been a severe drought. Very disappointing.
Good resort course
The older lady working the pro shop counter did t look at us once while checking in. I got the impression Golf Now golfers bugged her. Front nine pace was great. Back nine was slow. Many greens had huge areas of dry rot. Some fairways had it too. Cantt take golf cart to load up clubs or unload. Nice looking holes.
Experience after 30 yrs
The course was in great shape, the greens were a little slow, neede mowing & rolling maybe a stint of 7. That was the only criticism I had. My recollection from 30 yrs ago the sand traps were white Gipson sand & were like flour trying to get out of after a vertical entry with the ball often buried. The traps were more traditional but were well maintained & consistent. Great course but a little tough to get too via Cty roads over hill & dale
Greens are in bad shape
Overall course was nice bet the greens are all half dead.
Maple helicopter seeds.
The only reason it got fair condition was there were maple helicopter seeds all over the greens and the fairways.
Beautiful scenery
The fairways were in great shape for April. The greens however suffered some winter kill and the tea boxes need a little repair. All in all a great day for golf.
Beautiful scenery
The course has beautiful scenery tucked in a valley. The fairways were in great shape for April but the greens suffered some winter kill. All in all a great day for golf with very friendly staff.
First time played at here
Course was in great shape as greens were just sanded. This course is very challenging and I will return to play it again. I came from Iowa to visit my son who lives within 30 of the course. Look forward to playing here again.
Disappointed
Had high expectations based on other reviews and cost. Course Conditions were average (actually below many of the lower cost courses we played during two week trip). Course design requires skilled shot shaping on many holes, both due to the hole’s routing and the intrusion of trees into the playing corridors. Greens were generally in good shape. Tree pruning severely needed on course and along cart paths.
Needs More Publicity
I suppose all the new course built in the state over the last several years have taken this course out of the spotlight. But it is a very nice course at a cost far less than the newest high level and high cost courses.
Well maintained, very good greens, and friendly people. Will go again, and again, and again...
This course has always been a classic
The weather was perfect and the course equaled.
Have played this course over the last 30 years, and found it in the best shape ever.
It's a beautiful course. The holes are challenging and very well framed.
I would not miss playing this course. It is exceptional in the fall with the beautiful display of leaf color in the bluffs that surround the course. It is always a treat.
