Declining course
I’ve played to its course a bunch over the years. Was excited when they put in a new putting green.
The course is in rough condition. Tee boxes need cutting and cleaning up. Fairways need the same tlc... greens look good but don’t hold very well. Around the green is usual garbage. Chucks of grass and weeds.
Probably won’t be back for a while.
Wish the Becky pierce never closed
Good course
Course drains great. I've played here six times over the past two weeks because Pointe Mallard (Decatur) is closed because of virus concerns (slip & fall lawyers and health of employees). Greens are good with three of them having some "acne" spots on part of the greens. Nice to play a course that's not mushy due to a excessively wet two months. Staff friendly and accommodating. Easy walking course and good value (senior walking rate M-F is $17 & $21 on weekends). Though planes are greatly reduced because of the virus fear, it's neat to watch the planes land and take off right next to the course.
Lack of Player Control
As I played people in carts would cut across the course an jump in front of us. This would slow the pace of play way down. Did not appear that there was any trying to control this activity. When we made the turn they let a group jump in front of us. There needs to be some work done on the greens. Where weeds were they now have dead spots from the winter kill. Not sure if this course will be playable come the spring and summer.
For Bogey Golfers who like to Walk
Easy layout geared toward the novice or recreational golfer. There are very few places you can't recover from a poor shot, therefore well suited for the high handicapper. Course sports a flat terrain making it well suited for the golfer who likes to walk and/or carry their own bag. Also, I have never seen this course overly crowded, so it's a good choice for practice or the single golfer who likes to play multiple balls, or from multiple locations on any one hole. Best time to play is during the week (M-F) when the rates are more in line with what this course offers the "Average Joe." Green and cart fees are steeper on the weekend (S/S) and probably considered a little pricey in comparison to other local public golf courses in the same general condition (average at best) and catering to a similar market. The course is maintained like you would expect from a local public golf course, but during the summer months the fairways can get hard as they are not watered nearly enough. Greens are okay but could stand to be weeded more frequently; crab grass intrusion is a problem. Convenient location and very easy to get back on the interstate when your round is over.
Unfriendly Management
I have golfed at this course many times over the years. Its a decent course for practice and the staff has always been friendly. Today the owner was there. Very different story. Would not allow my 11 year old grandson to play when I made reservations for him and me. Said I had to play with 3 other folks (strangers) if I wanted to play when I had made reservations for just my grandson and me to play by ourselves. That was one disappointing experience but I took my grandson to Top Golf and we had a great time.. People have the right to run their businesses the way they want but I also have the right to let people know what I think so I will be doing that in every forum I can. I don't plan to golf anymore at Sunset Landing
wide open, can't loose a ball unless you hit it over the fence towards the runway
usually good greens, I don't know what happened. Greens were horrible. Paid $15.00 each of us. I wouldn't pay over that. Their greens fee is outrageous on the weekends. Don't go unless you have a Golf Now coupon. Driving Range balls are bad. Club house needs to be updated about 20 years ago.
play again
good place that it is down town. i would like one year membership.
Good course
Good course for the money. Greens have been good for years.
good experience
Good day on the course. The course is convenient to Huntsville but could be a bit cheaper, say $30-35 per round with cart.
Sunset Landing
Overall the course was in good condition, other than the first fairway still closed for re-sodding and playing as a par-3. The greens were mowed adequately but a lot of weeds are growing into them. The bunkers do not have enough sand and play like they are dirt patches. This week the pace of play was quite slow compare to the time I played before. Overall it is a good course for the money.
Good Experience
Had a good time. Course is improving and greens are in better shape, holding approach shots well.
Great value!
Greens are in great shape. Very soft. Fairways are in fair shape. They lost one and are working on some others. Marshall very nice but staff member that took my payment was not real friendly. Great value through Tee Times
Better condition than years past
Played as single from Gold tees. There's a significant difference between the whites and golds. The greens were in excellent condition & shots held well. Fairways were average to good condition- there were some bare spots which could be corrected easily, but were pretty much the same 2-3 years ago. Traps were average condition.
I did not care for the large cups cut in the greens, but they did not interfere with play to the regular cups.
There are very few places on the course where you can't recover from off-line shots. My handicap index is 17 and I scored 79- which is about right for a 107 slope.
Ok course
Staff very friendly and helpful. Course was in descent shape with only a few greens chewed up. Overall since it was a 50% off hot deal, it was very very well worth the money. Normal green fees during summer is $41 and I think that is too much for their course. Plays great otherwise.
Big holes for non golfers
They have put these giant extra holes on each green to try and get novice golfers to play the course , hated having them in the way on every green !!! Used to love the course wish they would remove them
Forgiving Course
Right on the airport and next to Redstone Airbase, so enjoy the fighter jets practicing their touch landings and takeoffs! Good course to fine tune your game when you are shaking off the rust. Not a lot of trouble. Greens are in good shape, but they have two flags on each. One regular, one basketball hoop sized hole for extreme novices. It has been dry, so bring a hammer to get your tee into the ground. Looking forward to trying this again when we have had a bit more rain to soften things up. Cant complain about the low rate to play through GolfNow.com!
Forgiving Course with Improving Conditions
With lots of forgiveness in the form of wide and/or parallel fairways, you can spray the ball out of the box and still score. The staff is friendly and conversive, and conditions are improving. The poa anna shows up annually, but has all but disappeared and the greens are rolling nice. It'd be great if they would add some white sand to the bunkers as many are mostly Alabama clay powder. This place is in much better shape than Huntsville Municipal.
Good greens
Very nice greens. Staff is professional and helpful. We got behind a very slow group and the marshal helped us play through. Nice place to play for those of us who do not get distracted by the aircrafts.
Worth the money, it is low cost
Ok, first course I have played in Huntsville, AL in 10 years. It is right next to the airport so you see and hear planes overhead every now and then. Not distracting more cool. The course had some rough spots that were under repair, but for the money it was a very nice course. Full length and the staff was fantastic. Could have used better signs at the turns but each T box was nicely labeled. Best advice - WALK. This is a very flat, small distance to the next T box kind of course. But they do not have pull carts so plan ahead.
