Located in the Lost Pines area of Bastrop 30 minutes east of Austin, ColoVista Golf Club is a dramatic, immaculate course that’s consistently rated one of the best in Texas. Some actually question whether it is in Texas, given the unusual terrain that the course flows through.

The highlight of the course is the now-famous 191-yard No. 15, which is perched on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River and has been called the prettiest par 3 in Texas. From a cliffside tee, the hole drops over 120 feet down to a green surrounded by bunkers and swales. Because of the wind, the best play is a hard punch shot that at least has the chance to lessen the impact of the breeze.

The front nine is more of a links-style track that definitely contrasts with what you’ll see on the back. The opener is a tough, 468-yard par 4 that plays downhill.

The back nine, considered the better of the two, makes the most of the rugged terrain and extreme elevation changes. The view from the bluff is spectacular; giant pine trees line the fairways, and the 90-degree doglegs all add to the character of the nine.

After being closed for around two years, the course has had a comprehensive renovation that includes re-definition of tee areas and fairways; bunker restoration; re-grassing for improved playing surfaces; and new tee markers, signage and pin flags.

Getting there : From Austin, take Hwy. 71 east to McAllister Rd.. Turn right and follow the signs to the course, which is located 4 miles east of the river in Bastrop.

Not totally ready just yet!

The course has been closed for a couple years and just reopened. The greens are in immaculate condition and the fairways are much better than was expected. They are well on their way to getting the course back into absolute pristine condition as it was before closure yet it is still a very fun course to play and none of the weeds or rough spots were any kind of an issue or made play any less fun. This is going to be a great course and is already a very good course and a fabulous value for the money, would highly recommend anyone go play ColoVista and soon.

Play it before the price goes up!!!

This is a wonderful course. They have only been open for 5 weeks so the bunkers and fairways could use some work, but the greens are the best that I've putted in the Texas so far. I also love the way the course slowly transitions from a links style course on the front nine to a parkland style with huge elevation changes on the back. The views are spectacular.

There wasn't a 19th hole and that tempted me to drop a star, but I just couldn't do it, The golfing experience was just too perfect. I would play this one before the price goes up as it is easily on par with Onion Creek and Wolf Dancer. I can't wait to see what this course will look like in a few months.

Course is newly re-opened

Course is in generally good shape and will only get better with time as it has just re-opened. Needs to be marshaled better, pace of play was poor to be nice. Golfers not playing to there abilities (from the wrong tee box) and 5 somes slowing down pace of play.

This will be above average again.

I played this course only three months after being reopened. The new management did a great job on the greens in such a short time. The greens were large with many undulations and character although a little firm.
If they improve the fairways and bunkers as the did the greens the course should be well liked.

Nice course. Would play again (when it's cooler).

Very spacious fairways, allowing for easy error correction. Fairways and greens were nicely kept. Would play again....just not when it's 102 degrees and the middle of the afternoon in August! Not many trees to offer shade. Nice course overall.

Course has numerous holes that are challenging and greens are excellent.

First time to play ColaVista since it re-opened. Prior to it closing several years ago I played it regularly, one of my favorite courses in the Austin area. The new greens are excellent. I loved putting on them. Fairway grass was average and bunkers still need work on them. Overall I rate the course a solid B.

Great value for your money

This course is really coming back to great shape. For only being open 5 weeks the operators are really doing a great job. The 15th hole is a challenging hole with an incredible view. Would highly recommend and hope to play again the next time we are in the area. Greens were in excellent shape and rolled true.

Back nine challenging

Great to play there again it has been several years. Greens in very good condition and the fairways are acceptable. Fly the ball to the green because to rely on a hit and run just is not going to happen. Had a Great time and we will come back soon. jj

Great greens! Good fairways. Tee boxes need work

Great course design. Greens are new and already pretty good. Several tee boxes need maintenance. Hole 15 is one of the best par 3s in state. Great value for the money!

Could be great with some work...

First off I do relize this course just reopened, however, a few things should have already been addressed. The roughs are long & inconsistent. The fairways are in good shape with only minor areas that need some attention. Greens are in great shape especially for the drough & high temps. Pace of play was fine after the threesome in front of us,which only had two sets of clubs, let us play through on number 6. They do not have their liquor license yet so no alcohol on the course, not sure if you could bring your own or not. Also the club house attendant did not offer us a cooler for the waters & Gatorade we purchased so it got hot quickly. There are water coolers spaced throughout the course but when it's 100+ outside they never seem close enough. In summary there are better values to be found in the area until they have had some time to address some minor issues.

Definitely one of my top 3 in the Austin and surrounding area.

Great to be back in play at Colovista. Always has been a favorite course of mine. Seeing it almost back to its great shape was awesome. Love to hilly back nine and contrasting
links-like front. Greens were perfect and the rest of the course is coming around nicely after the long downtime. Really enjoyed it.

Still needs a little work

Course overall needs some grounds keeping. Tee boxes are a little shaggy and rough is very hard to find balls that are just off the fairway. Greens were pretty slow, but rolled very true.

Maybe it used to be in good shape

They recently re-opened this course after several years. It looks like the course was once really nice (good layout, scenic, etc), but it needs a lot of attention. Fairways are extremely rough. Nothing is mowed well. Mud and standing water all over the place (despite no real rain recently). Greens are slow and inconsistent. Ant hills on tee boxes.

Staff is friendly and grounds are nice, but the course just doesn't play well at all. Wouldn't play again until it's kept up better.

This course is recently reopened, but the greens are very good.

The rough was a little high, and very penalizing with narrow fairways! Greens were good and true. There was no opportunity to buy food, only water and soft drinks.
