Located in the Lost Pines area of Bastrop 30 minutes east of Austin, ColoVista Golf Club is a dramatic, immaculate course that’s consistently rated one of the best in Texas. Some actually question whether it is in Texas, given the unusual terrain that the course flows through.
The highlight of the course is the now-famous 191-yard No. 15, which is perched on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River and has been called the prettiest par 3 in Texas. From a cliffside tee, the hole drops over 120 feet down to a green surrounded by bunkers and swales. Because of the wind, the best play is a hard punch shot that at least has the chance to lessen the impact of the breeze.
The front nine is more of a links-style track that definitely contrasts with what you’ll see on the back. The opener is a tough, 468-yard par 4 that plays downhill.
The back nine, considered the better of the two, makes the most of the rugged terrain and extreme elevation changes. The view from the bluff is spectacular; giant pine trees line the fairways, and the 90-degree doglegs all add to the character of the nine.
After being closed for around two years, the course has had a comprehensive renovation that includes re-definition of tee areas and fairways; bunker restoration; re-grassing for improved playing surfaces; and new tee markers, signage and pin flags.
Getting there : From Austin, take Hwy. 71 east to McAllister Rd.. Turn right and follow the signs to the course, which is located 4 miles east of the river in Bastrop.

Have always loved playing this course.
The greens are great at this time. However, the fairways need work. This is understandable as they are trying to get the course back in shape after being dormant for a few years and also because of the fire. It is still so much fun to play this layout.
Great to see Coloovista back
Closed after the fire and thought to be lost forever, Colovista has risen from the ashes.Our expectations were low and we found out the greens are 5 months old. Despite the rating I was forced to give it is in remarkable condition given the circumstances. The greens will be great after a few more months.
The fairways will need some time but the layout and the views have not changed. This was always a classic golf course and will be again. We will play there again.

Good course. Just needs a bit more work and it will be fantastic. Hats off to staff and all those who have gotten that course in good shape in a short amount of time. Enjoyed the layout and thee greens, holy cow! The greens are the best I have played on. Staff is very friendly and keeps things moving. Enjoyed the round.

Course looks great for the amount of work they had to due. Course will be just as challenging as before and will look just as great. Greens were perfect and rolled true.
This course is going to be great.
I'm happy to be one of the first to review this course. Back in the day this course was ranked in the top 5 courses in the state. Then a series of troubling times hit the course. Drought, wild fire, and the death of the owner left the course in need of attention and no one willing to flip the bill. Starting in April, new management began to put the pieces back together. Today the course still needs some work. The tee boxes are rough and a little uneven, the fairways have some rough patches, and some of the bunkers are grassy and rocky. But they have their priorities straight and the greens are healthy and roll true. Besides the physical aspects that need some attention, this course is truly amazing. The front nine plays like a links course with open fairways lined with tall grass and water. The back nine plays into the woods with beautiful tall trees and some serious elevation changes. #15 is their signature par 3 with a 100 foot elevation change to the green and about a 200 mile view overlooking the colorado river. All four of us had to take a minute to take it all in. Challenging holes that reward good shots and penalize bad ones make the good shots feel so good and the bad shots make you want to assume the fetal position. Have I given courses with better fairways and tee boxes the same number of stars? Yes. But it would be a lie to say this course wasn't "good" even if there are some that are "more good". In conclusion, play this course while you can before the price goes up. I have every expectation that this course will be back on top and soon. Im glad i played it, I'm glad I get to say I have played it, and I will certainly play it again in the future.
