Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Washington offers two championship courses, the Olympic and Cascade, both of which are known as two of the best public courses in the greater Seattle area. The Olympic Course is the more challenging of the two with more hills and water hazards. Dramatically sculpted from the thick Pacific Northwest forest, the driving corridors are surprisingly generous. Towering evergreens line the fairways and there are significant elevation changes throughout, making it a complete workout to walk the course. The layout's most challenging element is the undulating greens, which are often guarded by bunkers and mounding. The final four holes are the most memorable featuring a combination of water, trees, and stunning views. The final hole on the Olympic Course is a drivable par 4 that is the perfect finish to your round.

Great overall golf experience

Funny(ish) story, when I started my round at Gold Mountain, my wife and I went through our usual routine for this trip of selecting the tees I’d play based on rating, slope and distance; from what we read, we decided to play the blues (it was in the wheelhouse of the 120-125 slope we have been playing). As it turns out, it’s important to pay attention to which course you are playing as the 122 slope for the Cascade course is not the same as the 135 of the Olympic (the actual course I was playing). A few holes in, as I was commenting that this course seemed to play a bit tougher than its slope, we discovered this mistake.

That preface is necessary because I probably played the most complete round of golf I have played in some time, and still shot about 6 strokes worse than the scores I’ve been posting lately. The Olympic Course, at least from the blues, demands no less than your best if you want to post a decent score. That is not to say it is overly punitive or gimmicky in a way that will frustrate; it is simply long and complex enough to create issues for a bogey golfer who isn’t on top of his game.

The first thing I noticed (and really liked) was the high grass at the top of most of the bunkers. While the majority of the traps are smallish and fairly playable, the grass does add an extra dimension. Further, I actually had a tougher time playing out of that elongated rough the one time I was in it than either of the times my ball graced the traps.

The course is as beautiful as it is challenging and makes good use of its surrounding trees, water, and natural elevation changes to increase the value of both its aesthetics and playability. The short (271) finishing hole includes all of these elements and arguably the heaviest bunkering on the course as well. I teed off with a 7 iron and still almost hit it too far (admittedly I pulled the ball a little too far to the left trying to avoid the water front right). Fortunately my ball stayed in the yard and I was left with a wedge into the green. A little discipline is necessary here as it would be easy to grab too big a club and wind up out of bounds.

The par 3’s which range from 137 to 227 (downhill) are a good indication of the variety of shots required to navigate the course, as I used anything from a pitching wedge to my 3 wood to reach these greens in regulation. Ultimately, this round allowed (forced?) me to use every club in my bag except my 64 degree wedge (and you could argue I should have used that at one point, I just lacked the confidence to do so).

The pace of play was great as far as I can tell. I went off first as a single, but a group of two right behind me and a similar group behind them never lost touch. As I chatted with some folks near the clubhouse, the subsequent groups rolled in on time as well. The staff was also very friendly and helpful, adding to the overall experience.

I would recommend Gold Mountain to anyone with the chance to play it; and, since I have cause to visit the Seattle area fairly often, am sure I will play it again.

Great layout and condition

Played Olympic twice for the first time. Took <4.5 hours and 5 hours each. The course layout is fantastic. Holes have their own characters. #9 is great looking from the tee. #18 short par4 offers a drivable approach. The greens are undulated but reasonable w reasonable speed.

The only unpleasant experience was caused by a rude single golfer behind our foursome. The front 9 took nearly 3 hours b/c of a slower 3-some in front of us. The single dude blamed and yelled us even he could clearly see we have been waiting for the group in front all the time. On the turn, the slow 3-some dropped out. We finished the second 9 in 1.5 hour! Unfortunately covid brings more golfers, and not all of them know pace of play nor are courteous.

So while the pace of play is okay. Course marshall is needed.

Most underrated Course so far on GolfAdvisor

It's a total shame that Olympic at Gold Mountain is rate so low on GolfAdvisor. It's my new most underrated course on GA (replacing Riverwalk San Diego). This course should easily rate in the high 4's, not a 3.9. I found it to have all the qualities I look for in a 5 star rating:
- Championship length, check
- Challenging, memorable layout, check
- Plush tee to green and well groomed, check
- Well kept greens that roll true and fast, check
Honestly, I don't know who is playing and rating this course so low, but they are either spoiled rotten or very grumpy, and please don't blame the course for people playing slow! Ridiculous! Glad I listened to the experts who consistently place both 18's in the top 5 courses in the Seattle area. I'm not even going to bother with pictures, because if you're a smart golfer, you won't need any. You'll ignore the whiners and go play Olympic. Pure gold! I hope I have the privilege of playing here again!

Hard to beat

Came out to play 36 and had a wonderful experience. Cascade offers a more approachable warm up round, and has really improved course conditions. All of the staff, from pro shop, to restaurant, to marshalls, were extremely hard working and friendly. Olympic is one of the best challenges in the greater Seattle area. Awesome variety of holes, from the massive downhill par-3 12th, to the reachable par-4 18th. No better place to play 36 in the area! Incredible value

Very slow of pace

It’s a great layout, however the pace of play was incredible slow. I quit after the 13th, it took 4 hours. They have 2 courses there so they should designate one course for walking and the other for carts. And then alternate the courses. A 6 hour round isn’t fun!!

One of the best around

I played on Veteran's Day, where they did something unheard of for the veteran golfers in the community...... Free round of golf on either course! I absolutely love this track, from the faster greens that roll pure year round to the beautiful setting and amazing course lay out and conditions. Always a go to course when you want a fair mix of challenging and "easy" holes. Make the drive to Bremerton whenever you are in the area and play this gem, oh and bring the friends along too!

snail's pace

Third and last time playing the course. The first two times the pace was exceedingly slow but I liked the course so I thought I'd try it again My son gave me a gift certificate for XMAS so we went out on Sunday. We got to the sixth tee and there were two groups already there (we were the third). the marshall came around and said there were a couple of slow groups but they had started to speed up.

The round took five hours and ten minutes--unacceptable for early Sunday morning. I'm done.

Took too long!

Our round of golf took 5 hours 15 minutes, waiting an average of 10 mins every shot.
It's a course with great and challenging layout, most of the time well-maintained and one that my friends would travel 50 miles to play at. But the pace of paly this time round put us off.

Perfect - Besides the waits every hole

Not sure why the pace of play is so terrible here, waited every hole in the first week of January! Its even worse in the summer.. beautiful course though, maybe they just need to space their tee times more or get a marshall out there to keep everyone moving along. Played with sister and fiance, both who have golfed 10 times combined so we weren't some crazy fast group. Not fun playing 5 hour+ rounds.

Good winter course

Played a casual round with a cart in 3.5 hours. Course was generally in good shape despite recent rains and greens that appeared to have been punched 30+ days ago. Other than some fuzzy greens, my wife, who had never played the course before, and I enjoyed the round which had some challenging pin positions.
