Old Silo, turning into New Silo
I have played many courses in the state of Ky. With that being said i would have to say Old Silo has one of the most outstanding layouts in the country. The fact that they have 4 sets of tees so that all skill levels can play this challenging course is pretty remarkable . My first time there i was very impressed with the practice driving range, for being a public facility the course has one of the finest ranges in the state if not the country. The staff was friendly in the fully stocked proshop. I am definitely going back to play this fine course soon. If you haven't played it, your missing out.
Not a $45 course any more
When you establish the "no play from the bunkers" rule before you start it's obvious they aren't taking care of the course like they should be. So that begs the question, what is my $45 going toward? This course has a great layout and could be a top course in the state but I guess the economics are where they should be. Charge $25-$30 per round and make it up in volume. I won't pay $45 to play here again.
Chemicals
The owners need to put some money back into the course, need to spray for weeds. If your going to ask 50 on the weekend then you need to take care of it
Old Silo
Great course. Greens could use a little work(water). Played a few ago week greens were in better shape. Bunkers are in need of repair; no sand full of dirt and weeds. Overall a great challenging course.
Good public course
Fairways, greens, teeboxes, range were in great shape but many of the bunkers were under repair. The bunkers have not been in great shape the past few times that I've been to Old Silo. The pro shop is small but clean, and the staff was friendly. Attached to the pro shop is a restaurant and bar that offers good, cooked-to-order food. The course is long and will be very challenging for high handicap golfers. It is one of the better public courses in Kentucky and is worth a 30 minute drive from Lexington.
Great layout, poor condition
Old Silo has one of the better layouts in the greater Lexington area. The owners, however are not putting the money back into the course to keep it in good shape.
The Good: Greens are in good shape and roll well.
The Bad: Sand traps are all GUR with grass and weeds growing in them. Fairways are full of weeds (play winter rules or you'll go crazy).
Overall the course is fun to play because of the better than average layout, it would be a 'must play' if the owners would put some money into the course to keep it up better.
Time Warp
Was with a group of 12 guys doing a golf package for the weekend in Lexington. This course was part of the package, we looked at their website and it looked like a great course. At check-in, we are told "play the bunkers as ground under repair". We ask which ones, he replies "every bunker".
Every bunker has not been touched in years! The course has more bunkers than your average course and EVERY ONE is a mess. Weeds, overgrown grass, mud, cracked, dirt. Everything except sand. Funny thing is, they still have rakes in them. Every bunker has a sign that says "ground under repair". What they spent on signs could have fixed half of them.
The course was and could be fantastic, but it has to be close to closing. Fairways have weeds, divots that have never been repaired.
Only positive comment is greens were in good shape.
If you are doing the Lexington golf package, take this one off the list until they get a new owner.
Where's the course superintendent?
This was the first time we have played this course this year. We have always liked it in the past and it was always in top notch condition. However, none of the sand bunkers are being maintained, the fairways have patches of crabgrass and they're not keeping up with the mowing. Sorry.
Great design but poor condition
I drove from Louisville to play as everyone said the course is beautiful, challenging, but fair.
I found a course with no sand in bunkers, weeds in the fairway and ground under repair.
The layout of the course is great. I would like to play it again when the course is in better condition. I would refrain from going there until the condition improves.
Terrible course condition
The layout is great, greens are in good shape. The fairways have more crab grass and weeds then real grass. The bunkers were dry cracked dirt and more grass then anything else. Very disappointed for what the course could be or maybe once was.
Neglected
This course was previously my favorite in the Central Kentucky, but they have really let it go. The bunkers were unplayable and resembled concrete, which is particularly problematic because of the number of them. The fairways were covered with crabgrass and the tee boxes were so hard I had difficulty finding a place to tee up on almost every hole. There were several other "little" things which I will not nitpick about on here, but all in all it seemed like a neglected dying course. It really is a shame because it has so much potential and many fun holes to play; it is just in bad shape. They profess themselves to be the best public course in Kentucky but that is simply not true at the moment. I may try it again next year early in the season and see if it is any better but this was likely my last trip.
Good shape but bunkers are awful
the last time I played old silo was some 5 years ago and I had fond memories of the course. While the tees, fairways and greens are still in great shape, they've completely given up on the bunkers. Still a great layout, but not as fun a course as it used to be.
Good layout, needs severe maintenance
I've played this course several times and it is a great layout, and the fairways and greens and most of the tees were good. Although I played this course cart paths only because of how saturated the course was, it was still ok. The one thing that was absolutely terrible was the bunkers, as much as everyone harps in the reviews how bad the bunkers are, I understand why the course is rated how it is. They don't drain, and they all are nothing but rocks and gravel. They are basically unplayable, so free drops were taken. Other than that the rough was a bit long, and most of the course hasn't seen a mower in a while due to the extremely wet weather, but I overlook the conditions right now, and know this course can come back. But in all,a I just think the layout is great.
Great condition and awesome layout!
Love the course and the staff! Always friendly and very helpful!
traps not been touched
Sand traps need work..fairways were great and course would be awesome with sand in traps and then manicured
Nice public course
This course is in great shape and is a challenging public course.
Great layout, greens and fairways were in decent shape. Bunkers unplayable.
Really nice layout greens and fairways were fine but they stopped maintaining the bunkers sometime ago. Which is unfortunate because they are an integral part of the layout and would add to the beauty of the course. The bunkers were totally unplayable had to take a drop. Facility's including carts were dirty but the staff was courteous. Given the bunkers and facilities condition I felt that $50 for the round was a little high. If this course had more financial backing it could awesome.
Old Silo - Course Evaluation
The maintenance is a little behind due to the severe winter and wet spring. Sand traps need a lot of attention and fairway divots are horrendous.
Sand traps
The course is in good shape except the 104 bunkers have not been maintained. They were just dirt and unplayable
Agree 100% with this review. Played here in July of 2015, and on every tee box you could visualize what an exceptional course this would be if it were only maintained. Regular full price is too much to make it worth the drive from Lexington while in this condition.
