Scenic Design which needs some maintenance
The course is scenic, hilly, with good fairways. The rough is narrow, however, and missing into the rough brings the possibility of out of bounds or lost ball on many of the holes. Most of the many bunkers on the course would be more properly described as 'gravel pits with mud'. A few show signs of fresh sand being placed; if all were in that condition the course would be much more playable and enjoyable. I know, one should stay out of the bunkers, but the average player will end up in several, perhaps many, in the course of a round. Cart pathways are concrete, in excellent condition. If one suffers from vertigo or fear of heights, bring your airsickness pills; several steep descents and ascents on the course.
Best course around!
Beautiful, well maintained. Tourney was happening in front of my group, so pace of play was slow. Pace hasn't been slow during other rounds I've played there. The only complaint I have about the course condition related to the bunkers. They need more sand. Sand in 90% of bunkers was hard and full of gravel. Tees and fairways are like carpet, just perfect! Greens are soft enough to welcome approach shots, yet very quick with the putter. Forces you to carefully plan each shot because you definitely want to be below the hole! Overall just a joy to play! Absolutely gorgeous course.
Beautiful and challenging
Great views, fairways are wide and rolling. Elevated tees make for great shot setups. Greens were fast and true for the most part. Only negative which has been mentioned by others is the sand traps are a little down needing raked and fresh sand. Wasn't enough to make me not want to play again. Great coarse and Great staff!
Very different for a public course
Lots of elevation changes and bunkers make this a very tough course but a lot of fun...greens and bunkers are in dire need of attention... Greens looked like the surface of the moon...lots of craters due to unfixed ball marks...Bunkers were unraked, some had standing water in them (had not rained in days) and almost unplayable in certain instances. But all in all a lot of fun to play.
Wow
This place hits me hard every time I play it... Beautiful course, long and difficult. Greens are slower than most courses like it and somehow they are hard as a rock.
Well worth the trip
Lives up to it reputation as a challenging course. A great variety of holes that will really make you stop and think about what shot you need to hit. If you can keep it down the middle and land the ball as needed you will be successful. There was a steady 15 mph wind when I played and it really added to the difficulty.
Pro sent us out the back. greens had just been cross cut and not rolled. they were unplayable. pro let player out the front when we made turn.
Unplayable back 9 with cross cut unrolled greens. At the turn pro let 7 groups out in front of us. We were first tee time.
Fairways good, greens ok, traps need work
Very nice course, but they are not taking care of the traps, the fairways are in good shape, some maintenace was done to the greens so there were some small holes but ok. No one was on the course the day we played, it was like having our own private golf course.
Excellent golf experience.
Old Silo golf course provides an excellent golf experience. Old Silo showcases the beauty of Kentucky's rolling hills and native trees and vegetation. The staff is warm and friendly in keeping with the finest traditions of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The pub fare was first rate and fairly priced.
Old Silo is excellent in every way with one exception. The routing does not permit the course to be walked as golf was intended to be played. With this reservation, Old Silo is simply superb.
this is the second best golf course i played in the state of kentucky
the fairways were in excellent condition. the greens were difficult but readable on the breaks. you had some elevated tees on several holes and forced carries.
great course
i had not played this course in 9 years and was eager to play it again. it did not disappoint me at all. scenic course winding around hills and forests. very beautiful. lots of room so rarely do you feel crowded. one huge problem is that there are so many sand traps and they are not maintained at all. i was told by someone who used to play there frequently that the traps are so numerous they cannot afford the cost of caring for them. they were atrocious. it is a shame because the rest of the course is really beautiful and fun to play. we played from the white tees.
Great location. Out of the city. Greenest course I've played this year.
Wonderful course. Maintained very well! Challenging but not impossible, definitely a great way to test your game. Doesn't matter whether you're great or just god awful, you'll appreciate the scenery of it all.
Challenging
One of the most challenging courses I have played! Absolutely brilliant set up. Greens are fast but very receptive. Fairways are in great shape. Bunkers weren't the best but overall OK. This is for sure a thinkers course it requires finesse and a solid strategy. Will definitely be going back.
Great Layout but needs some conditioning
My friends and I drove from Louisville to play Old Silo. The course has a great layout and is challenging but the course conditioning could use some help - especially the bunkers. Unfortunately there has been a bit of rain in the area over the last few weeks that didn't help things. Several bunkers were holding standing water, but the ones that didn't suffered from a reasonable depth of sand. They were more like playing out of hard pan than a bunker. We were behind a scramble group so the pace was a bit slow. The layout and challenge of the course was good enough that I'd like to try it again but would hope for better condition next time.
Great course!
Traveled 1400 miles from home for vacation, played a few courses and went to a lot of sights. Playing this course was worth the 1400 miles alone and by far the nicest. Will play again.
Beautiful course, great condition and challenging. One negative is it would be very challenging to walk this course, it's very hilly!
Beautiful course out in the country. Not crowded at all, great condition and challenging. It would be a very difficult course to walk.
Will be back to take on course again.
It was very hot the day we played. My dad has high blood pressure so we were only able to get in nine holes. So he asked the guy at the counter if we could get a rain check to come back. The guy was very respectful to our request so we will be back.
The course is challenging but fair.
Greens and fairways are in good shape. Most of the bunkers are in poor shape so we just took a FREE drop from them :)
I'm a long ball hitter, and this is one of the only courses that i can play all the clubs in my bag, love it
I love this course, I'm a long ball hitter and this is the only course that I can play all the clubs in my bag, love it
Beautiful but challenging course.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. The practice facilities were great, featuring a range with many targets with exact yardage provided to each, a chipping green and a massive putting green. The course itself was very pretty but very challenging to a 25 handicapper like myself. I loved the many elevated tee boxes and the hilly rolling terrain, even though it provided me with more difficulty. I only really have one complaint; I was looking forward to the myriad bunkers this course is known for but most were in need of raking or other maintenance, and many were ground under repair. I hit into and out of several, and they were all very hard. Also, the greens were very fast despite the soft conditions. I can't imagine their speed at their firmest. Still, an overall great Kentucky gem.
