River Place Country Club
About
River Place is finally established after years of financial problems that were resolved when Tom Kite and Roy Bechtol gave the facility new life with a redesign in the early 1990s. Located on the former Wilding Ranch between Lake Austin and Ranch Road 620, the Hill Country terrain is phenomenal, with a creek that dominates the front nine, and some dramatic slopes that never result in level lies.
The sloping is evident on No. 1, a 402-yard par 4 that requires a testy approach over a ravine from a downhill lie. No. 4 is tough because the creek rolls along the left side of the 561-yard hole before crossing in front of the green. And No. 7 is one of the toughest: a 430-yard doglegger that bends right around the creek.
The back side has a few ponds that come into play, but is void of the pesky creek. The one to watch for is No. 17, a 585-yard monster.
Getting there : From Loop 360, take Ranch Rd 2222 going west.. In about 5 miles you'll come to River Place Blvd. Make a left and look for the entrance on the left side of the street.

Challenging but fair
Based on other reviews we were prepared for a tough round, but this course is so beautiful, it was easy to focus on our game with few distractions. We didn't hear any traffic, construction or other players. Staff is friendly & helpful. Carts are basic without any GPS, and many holes are blind - overall a fun, interesting course.
Pretty, but tricked up
Too short and too many forced layups.
Very few opportunities to use the driver and even those are advised against. Rough is penal and unforgiving.
Staff was not welcoming at all to Golfnow players.
But the views are really nice and the condition was quite decent. Greens are excellent, though a few buried elephants seemed unnecessary.
Target golf with a lot of elevation changes.
Course has very few (if any) level places on any hole. Seems there was elevation - large elevation changes on almost every hole. Most fairways are banked to help keep the balls from wondering off too far but there are many blind shots.
Nice tees, fairways and greens - but very few of them are connected to each other. Sort of target golf from one to the other.
Just driving the cart around the course is an exciting adventure.
A Unique Challenge !
The same unique challenge I remember from playing 25 years ago. Not as Lush due to current water restrictions but a really different course than I've found anywhere else in Texas. Don't play here if you are looking to 'improve' your game, only bring your A game and you will Still be met with wonderful challenges to your shot making skills. Blind shots, elevation changes, unknown obstacles lie around every corner and in, over, through and around every canyon which for Me is fun and interesting. Go play and maybe you will enjoy this unique experience as well ! ?
Beautiful golf course and great condition.
Course was very challenging, but the views were great.
I would definitely play again.
Great experience, can't wait to get back
Everything about this place is great. It's a private club, which allows a bit of public play. There were free range balls on the range. The course is very challenging, even though it is a bit short on the card. There are a lot of elevation changes, and great views. The landing areas are very firm, and your ball may bounce into one of the many canyons if you aren't careful. Repeated playing of this course is necessary to figure it out and shoot a decent score. It was a lot of fun. The drink cart was always around, with more cold Shiner. They had Pilsner Urquell on draft at the 19th hole, which was an amazing bonus. Can't wait to play it again soon.
Gem in the Hills
This was my first time playing River Place, I could not pass up the GolfNow deal. The course is in amazing condition given the 102 heat yesterday. The track itself is absolutely beautiful, meandering through the hills, an escape that's 15 minutes from downtown. That being said, the beauty is a beast - I would not recommend this course for beginners. Bring a few extra balls and a positive attitude and you're in for real treat.
Great course and friendly staff
I would play this course again great value. The staff was very nice and helpful. The practice area was well maintained and putting green was true.
Beautiful course
One of the nicest, most challenging courses I've played in Austin.
Good Course
Very pretty course and well maitained. The course is built within Texas Hill Country with lot of hills and fascinating view. I was able to play with GolfNow 50% discount, otherwise may be a bit too pricy.
I love the overall experience playing at this course.
Challenging, undulating, and not for novices!
I got stuck with 3 singles, but got a deal at $30. OMG, the other 3 were slow and bad. I broke away after 9 and the second 9 went much quicker. Awesome layout with amazing views! I played the tips (6600 yds) For a right hander that misses left, I had a lot of second shots in the rough, ball way below my feet, and to elevated greens or greens with ravines in front of them. Definitely a shotmakers course. If you are over a 20 handicap, probably not a course for you. Greens were a nice speed, a few above the hole can get away from you, but fair. Bunkers are okay. Rough is the type where the ball lays down in and definitely worth avoiding. Fairways were good. Some fool tried to walk, but ended up getting carted to each hole. I walk almost any course I don't get on golfnow, but this one is not walkable. Front side is special, back side is cramped. Should be priced $10 more than Crystal Falls or Sun City courses in my opinion.
Great course for the money!
I've played here numerous times and the course has always been in great shape.
Wonderful course and staff.
I arrived at River Place and was greeted and given a cart. I was charged as I had agreed earlier on GolfNow and was given the greenlight to tee off next following a foursome. My friend and I enjoyed the round finishing in about 4 hours. We were not held up or hurried and greatly enjoyed the golf and panorama views of the Austin area.
Excellent Course. Looking forward to playing again!
I appreciated the friendly staff. They meet you in the parking lot with a cart. The driving range was well maintained. The course is absolutely breathtaking and challenging. I enjoyed playing with the other patrons of the course. They have been renovating the course and the clubhouse, all the improvements are turning out well.
Must play!!!
Got to enjoy 18 beautiful holes of golf with my daughter. The course weaves in the hill country through trees and bunkers and canyons. Ive played some very nice courses in Texas and this one has now become my new favorite! If you haven't played this course you should definitely put it on your to do list and if you have then you know exactly what I'm talking about!
Amazing.
Impecable. Amazing course however challenging elevations. WIll definitely be returning.
Challenging, but fun. Staff was very friendly
Our family had a great time yesterday.
We were greeted in the morning by a very friendly and informative gentleman in the pro shop.
Introduced us to all the facilities we will need access to, gave a brief introduction of the course we will be playing, lead us to the complimentary coffee and ice water.
He made us feel very welcomed and I could tell that he tried to make us feel at "home".
I greatly appreciated his service and was easily the top experience I had even before tee-ing off.
Course played great, pretty challenging, but very fun and enjoyable at the same time.
Will definitely comeback.
Bring some Golf Balls
Excellent course!! Very challenging especially if you haven't played it before.
One of the most beautiful courses I have ever played on.
Food in Clubhouse was outstanding!!!
Challenging and interesting course
Fun to play - very different. Lots of elevation change and holes that require some creative shot making.
Great golf course.
This is a very challenging golf course off the tee, you can hit the middle of the fairway on many holes and still end up OB if you haven't hit a fade or draw into the slope. Being a lefty helped a great deal because almost every fairway had an open high area to the left and usually there was OB just feet from the right edge. If you're a righty that plays a fade off the tee this course will eat you alive.
