Pine Forest Golf Club
About
Built by Don January in 1979, Pine Forest Golf Club in Bastrop, Texas provides a true golf adventure through sneaky elevation changes and red bluffs, with blind tee shots and holes along the Colorado River. No. 3 is a picturesque par 3, playing 170 yards downhill, with a green framed by the red bluffs. On no. 6, keep the tee shot right to avoid a blind second shot, and watch out for the tough, two-tiered green. The seventh hole plays along the Colorado, and is protected by a massive cottonwood tree on the left. On the back, make note that the highest point on the course is the 11th green. For the home stretch, make the most of the two downhill par 3s. No. 12 plays 180 yards and you'll need to leave it below the hole. The 16th hole is longer at 225 yards and is protected by a beautiful oak tree on the left.

Enjoyable course
Despite the storms we had a great time on this course. This course is challenging but doesn’t beat you to death. I would like to see better directions on the cart paths as it is easy to get lost. It would also be better if there distance/description markers on each hole. With a little investment and TLC this would be one of the better courses in central Texas. Will definitely be back
Could be great
I hadn’t played Pine Forest in 25 years. I had my first hole in one on this course so I was excited to play. The course winds through pine trees along the Colorado river with varying degrees of elevation. It could be an awesome course but it was terribly in need of maintenance. The course needed mowing and the greens were so slow (needed mowing) that it was very difficult to get the ball to the hole. The recent rains may have been the reason nothing was mowed but the tee boxes were mostly bare. It’s a beautiful course and I’d recommend playing just for the unique scenery but if you are serious about golf, I’d play somewhere else.
Nice. View
I have to say the views of golf course are great played today. This would be a premium destination just redo the greens like putting in my back yard fairways need a lot of work value is good . Please be more attentive to greens need to be redone other than that will play again if I had control of this course would be double the green fees thanks pitty so nice of area
Good value for money, nothing to write home about
Overall, really solid value for money—just a hike from downtown Austin. The freeze really took a toll on the grass, and there are still lots of patchy spots
Great scenery and very challenging
I've played this course probably 6 times and it could use some help when it comes to the maintenence of the greens and tee boxes but would definitely recommend this course for the price one great place to play....
Nice course--just needs some TLC and a happy pill
I really like this course. The layout is interesting and the course is challenging but not impossibly so for a bogie golfer. The course is mostly in good condition; if a few fairways, 4-5 tee boxes, and 3-4 cart paths are fixed, it would be in great condition. I hear that there is new ownership committed to getting this fixed. If he/she reads this, please do address this and read the following. My only substantive complaint is staff friendliness. The starter and course marshal are helpful and pleasant, but the front desk guy is consistently rude. Every person I've introduced to the course has commented on it. No one expects a hug, but a more civil demeanor is certainly in order.
Not what it used to be.
First of all let me say that I used to love playing here but hadn’t been in 4 years. Love the layout and the views. The overall experience was disappointing. So much so that we left after 9 holes. Fairways were very spotty, tees were as well and the greens were not good. The first 6 hadn’t been mowed and we played in the middle of the day. The last 3 were much better as they had been mowed but were still slow. We decided to leave after 9 as we caught the crowd and it took 50 minutes to play the last 3. It just seems that overall the general upkeep has been ignored. Looked old and unkept. Such a shame as this used to be a great place to play. Some of the reviews mention new ownership and I hope they can restore this course to what it should be. I will be back when I read that it has improved,, but until then I will stay away.
This is a beautiful little course.
You definitely had to shoot straight to get anywhere on this course but it was a great, no pressure kind of course. The greens were nicely maintained and the staff were very friendly. The scenery was amazing and it was a perfect day of golf. Just need to add the boxes to collect broken tees and maybe a bit more identification for which hole you were on. This was our first time and had to ask directions to get to the first hole.
Could be a fun course but not taken care of
Absolutely terrible fairways and tee boxes. Greens were consistent just really slow. Has some really fun elevation changes and a good layout. Just needs a lot of work.
Great layout, poor conditions
It's sad that this courses condition has deteriorated as much as it has since the first time i played it in 2002. I wouldn't say it was a 5 star course then but it would give a 4 star a run for it's money. The layout can compete with most any course in Central Texas and some of the views are spectacular. While several of the fairways and greens are in decent condition, a few are in poor shape to say the least. You can play courses in much better condition, for the same green fees, or less. Since I live with 20 minutes, I hope the newest ownership can get the course back to its previous shape.
Course conditions better than expected
Don't let reviews of poor course conditions scare you away from playing the course. The greens were in good condition. A few tee boxes need help and three or four fairways were less than ideal. Other than that, fairways were very playable. The layout is fun and has some terrific views and interesting elevation changes. The green fees are reasonable. Even though it's a bit of a drive for me to play there, I'll certainly be playing the course regularly.
