Good illustration of how tight this course plays. The 11th tee. Fairway not 20 yards wide. Forty foot elevation change to green. Miss the fairway and lose the ball. Photo submitted by BrandonWebb on 12/01/2017

Needs TLC
Based on the layout, setting and multiple bridges and tunnels built into the course you can tell at one time this was a very nice course that has fallen into disrepair. There is no way to know what the future plans are for the course but if you want to play a nice layout at a good rate with a few blemishes give it a try.
Mediocre
My friend raved about this course, saying it was one of the best deals in Birmingham. Greens were in good condition, but the overall layout and back 9 were less than stellar. Back 9 needs a lot of work. Found several golf balls and beat said friend, so overall it was a good time. Probably won’t be playing this course again though.
Great Greens & Challenging
Really enjoyed our time! Some holes are very narrow and unforgiving, but the course, overall, was very nice.
Days are numbered
Heatherwood is a very difficult golf course. The course needs much TLC but I don’t think they have the money to do it. I’ll play it again if I can get a Hot Deal, but it’s not worth it otherwise.
So much potential
Acknowledging that I played in February, I would still not recommend this course. My biggest complaint is the tee markers. Blocks of wood are meant to indicate which tees are which on the front 9, but many of the blocks are missing and the paint has faded from all of them. Finding the right tees was literally never easy. Then on the back 9, tees are indicated by colored domes but the scorecard order of colors is different than the signs posted on each tee box. So confusing. There were warped sheets of plywood in the middle of one of the holes, terrible cart path concrete, and overall just felt unkept and run down. Disappointing because the land and surrounding trees/hills are beautiful. Feels like a well-designed and challenging course that was built and forgotten about. Also will add — this is not a walking-friendly course. Carts are 100% necessary. Not a dealbreaker, but something to note if you enjoy walking.
Scenic but tight!!
Very Narrow and steep drop offs about 50% of holes.
No visual clues on score card or cart to help with design layout. Very little room for error. Pace of play was excellent, very few foursomes on course.
Heatherwood has improved
It’s been a while since I’ve played. Heatherwood grew a bad name around town but it’s a lot better. The bunkers need work, but the fairways and greens were in really good shape. Still wish the range was longer as you can’t hit more than an 8 iron without hitting balls beyond the end of the range. If you haven’t seen the course since it reopened go try them out.
Challenging and fun
The course is narrow off the tee. Have to hit fairways or hope you find your ball. You have to play course management on this course. A fun course to play. Staff was very friendly and pace was great.
Much improved
This was my first trip to Heatherwood since the new ownership and I was not disappointed. Tree lined, thin, undulating fairways lead up to multi tiers greens surround by challenging bunkers. Playing from the blue tees is a task, but there are some drivable par 4s and opportunities for birdies/eagles.
The front nine appears to have received the majority of the attention and the back nine had some area for improvement. The driving range is very short at 160 yards and the putting green is tough to find on your first trip out.
Heatherwood
Very strange layout. Too many blind shots and needed to lay up on some holes due to long carry over penalty areas.
Challenging course
Very tough course. If you don’t hit fairways off the tee, that’s one thing. Ball is gone. But if you don’t hit most GIR, your ball is gone. Go short!! Other than that it’s a fun course.
Solid public course
Rated most difficult public in Alabama but it plays well for the average golfer. Narrow though so lots of iron play to keep it in play. Fairways and greens were nice and tee boxes good to average. Great friendly staff and good food from the grille. Little slow for a sandwich at the turn but good quality.
Great course
I have played a lot of courses the last couple years and this has to be one of the best.the layout and the grounds around were perfect.
Challenging
Challenging, because course is narrow and extremely hilly. One has to be accurate with clubs, or you are in for a long day. Overall, course was nice, but it could be so much better, with a little more maintenance, signs directing to next hole.. Potential is there, up to golf management.
