#9 green, right in front of the clubhouse was by far the best conditioned of the day! Photo submitted by u547358672 on 03/15/2023

Sad greens
Tee boxes and faiirways were excellent as well a bunkers. But the greens were utter crap. Most of them were mainly sand and very little grass. This is so bad that I don't expect them to have reasonable greens all this season. Only a handful of greens were at least decent to putt on.
Don’t waste your time.
Never a person to write bad reviews but with the green fees they are charging it’s unbelievable. The greens are absolutely atrocious. Maybe if I didn’t damage my putter due to all the sand and potholes I wouldn’t have said anything. The city needs to re-evaluate what’s going out there. Such a beautiful course to have greens this bad. Hopefully they can figure it out.
Greens under repair
Greens have not been maintained. Hopefully they will be repaired before next year. Shame - fairways are good- more sand than green on the greens.
Very disappointing.
Greens
It’s hard to believe that the course is charging players full price when most, if not all, of the greens have been lost. It’s like putting through sand traps. An absolute joke that the course charged full weekend price. Should’ve been at least half price. I’ve played the course two other time and the greens were good. Never going back.
Greens need time to grow in
Greens are horrible, many bare spots and heavily sanded. Tees and fairways in great shape.
I saw a review from a few weeks ago that mentioned the greens and I called a couple days before playing and was told the front was spotty & sanded on Tuesday, back was in good shape. Upon arrival, our fees were dropped from $85 to $70 as a discount, didn't say why. Great news to me as I was hosting guests and covered fees for 4.
Putting green was in great shape so I was hopeful. At first tee, the starter mentioned the front 9 was sanded and the back was in good shape. Well..... all the greens were horrible.
Liked everything else about the course. Would play again but not until greens are confirmed. Based on what I saw, it will be 4-6 weeks minimum to be reasonable.
Horrible Greens
Never seen greens so bad. I saw reviews from a few weeks ago about greens recently being sanded. Called course a couple days before playing and the pro shop guy told me he just played, front 9 were a little spotty and back 9 were perfect. Upon arriving, pro shop said he was giving me a discount from $85 to $70, sweet!. He didn't explain why. Putting green was in awesome shape and had similar expectations for course greens. At first tee, the starter mentioned the front 9 greens were spotty, back in great shape. Well...they are all horrible. Heavily sanded, many bare spots.
Tees and fairways were in great shape. Liked the course layout. Would love to play again after the greens come in.
My guess is someone made a horrible mistake and chemically burned them. Course claimed frost but I dont by that. I live in the area and all our other courses are fine.
Nice layout. Horrible greens
I picked this course because it looked beautiful online and it was. I would say the greens were in bad shape but calling them "green" would be misleading. They are mostly devoid of grass and have some sort of green chemical on them. I'll be washing all of my clubs as soon as I get home. If the greens weren't such a disappointment i would be giving it four stars and highly recommending it to others. Our twosome finished in just under three hours.
Greens are terrible
At the time of playing this course. The greens are in such terrible shape the course should not even be open. Putting is not really even possible. the greens have the texture of golf ball actually, all full of dimples and not much turf to speak of. I am not a great golfer but feel cheated that was not able to use my putter. We just decided to get on the green and add strokes and not waste time trying.
WORST GREENS IN TEXAS
This title is not hyperbole. There is NOTHING WORSE then paying a good deal of money, $75 in this case, and having the greens be UNPLAYABLE. The worst part is the Starter, the Golf Shop Folks, literally no one gave anyone playing a head's up. The season pass holders at the course advised us to complain, saying "Yep, there are absolutely horrible" as we made the turn, but who wants to deal with that? Every single green was horribly diseased and covered with with sand/fertilizer. Shame on this course for not communicating to golfers and charging such an obscene price for a terrible experience.
This course has a great layout
Greens were very bad on the front 9 and OK on back, but other than that great layout and golf course. Staff was very friendly and good amenities.
Was my favorite course..
The course itself is very nice minus the sand covering the greens. I didn’t know if I was supposed to take the greens after putting but I probably should have. Wasn’t made aware of this even when I called the course prior to my reservation. Normally nice staff. Today was different. Got completely ignored by the staff at the grille just trying to get a couple of drinks before my round. When I finally was noticed, all I got was an attitude. Maybe if I was a retiree making cat calls I could’ve got there attention. Disappointed to say the least.
Like the course but c'mon
I'd held off on playing at Grey Rock for a while because I heard it wasn't worth the increase in price v. the other munis (Kizer/Clay/Mo Willy) but I finally made it out for the first time a couple weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised/impressed with the quality of the course, practice facilities, etc. Now for the 'but' ... I loved playing the course the first time BUT I went and played last night, paid ~$40 for a 9 hole round, and at no point in time did anyone mention that they had punched/sanded the greens to the point that I was essentially putting on a shuffleboard surface. I've never complained about course conditions before, but this is where I draw the line in terms of course management etiquette. I get that it's a necessary thing to do, but you better either adjust your price accordingly or AT MINIMUM tell people! Also, if you have to hit off the mats on the range, you might as well hit off concrete. The grass is great on the range but the mats are worse than other courses. All in all, if you're planning on playing, just call ahead and confirm the course isn't going to throw you a curveball.
Why are you giving this 3 stars with 3 greens being as bad as they are?
Greens were a mess
Played Sunday. Hoped for an enjoyable round. Rain made things difficult and the range and practice areas were shut down. Course has some interesting holes, but my goodness were the greens shameful. Most were 60-70% bare. Where grass was intact, it was fuzzy and slow. Of course no one told us this.
Nice course, but had issues (hopefully weather related)
I was in from out of town - I had never played here but the course looked nice and had good reviews. Austin had a couple days of heavy rain leading up to the day we played but we played crack of dawn and the weather was very nice. Had first tee time of the day and the pace of play was of course awesome (2.5 hour round for 2some. Despite the rain (Cart path only), the course itself was dry enough....... but........ the greens were terrible. A combination of muddy, bumpy and extremely slow. I know they could not mow the greens that day, but hopefully the greens are normally in better shape. I liked the layout and it is a good course. But the greens were comically bad. I also did not have the best experience renting clubs and some customer service. My "premium" rental club set had I think 11 clubs and no sand wedge. I did get to borrow a sand wedge, but that seems like an essential club. I also asked for a towel (the course was a little wet and muddy) and was told I could buy one. Anyway...I liked the course, would play again, but only if the greens were somewhere well above the 3 they probably were on the stimpmeter the day I played.
Diseased Greens?
Incredible layout and a really fun course. Unfortunately, it’s April and the greens are in the absolute worst shape. Not a single one will roll true or hold. Patches of grass that are a half inch long, super sandy over seeding conditions... wow. If I paid anything over $20 I would have felt scammed.
Why are you giving the course 4 stars when the greens are unplayable? We depend on reviews to choose how to spend our money and enjoy our precious weekends. This course was a crazy ripoff for the quality of conditions.
