Love this golf course
If I get a chance getting a good deal from GolfNow for this golf course on a weekend, I will play Reston every time. Closest course to where I reside, the course condition was great , and coupled with nice weather, it was good day to play golf. Finished the course in 4 hours 20 minutes, not bad time and close to perfect pace. There though need s TLC for the tee boxes, but otherwise overall great.
Buggy
I would play at a different time of year.Bugs were unbearable
Well Maintained
The course, greens and landscaping was very nice and showed a high level of attention to detail.
Decent course
Fairway in decent shape. However, the putting green could use some improvement. There are just so many repair marks (improper repair, by fellow golfers), it almost feels like putting post aeration.
Greens in Poor condition
The greens at Reston National where in poor condition. I played the Oak Mar par three course ($25 per round) the next day and the greens at Oak Mar were much better then Reston National. For just under $100 it does not compare to other courses in the area.
Getting back to how it was
I've always really liked the variety of lay out at Reston and it remains a good test suitable for all abilities. It had become very poorly maintained in recent years but its back to near its best. Teeboxes and greens were good and the fairways were lush. The greens are exceptionally slow but they run true.
Green fees are still above average but the twilight rates, particularly for walking (and it is a walkable course) are good. Can be slow but on a hot, steamy Monday in July it was pretty deserted so nobody holding up on progress - front 9 in under 2 hours for a 3 ball
Reston National
Nice track good layout, little overpriced especially charging the same price for both walking and riding. Marshall would have helped speed up play. Greens speed little indifferent. A/C wasn’t working inside.
Odd
Had the weirdest round playing reston with a buddy. We were paired with a couple that seemed to be friendly enough. We let them hit first and then it was off to the races. The gentleman would always go first and immediately start walking out to his ball and set up for his next shot. Not only was this extremely stressful to try and not hit him on every shot but he would also leave his wife behind. He would get to the green and stand by his ball while we tried to approach eventually just finishing his hole in rapid succession. He eventually just started playing ahead to the point if moving on the the next holes without us and hitting into the group ahead of us. Mind you we did play terrible bc of the rushing pace and stress but as soon as we let him go at the 5th the game relaxed and we shook off the odd situation. I understand wanting to move quickly for an after work round but we all work but maintaining a pace of 5 holes in 25-30 minutes is a bit insane. After things calmed down and we found our stride on the back 9 and had tremendous fun. Well until a few more odd circumstances. A couple or single wanted to replay some holes or something and drove back past us to then play behind us. They drove into us twice as we were making our approaches. We also waited on the tee box for a man and his dog to stop playing on the fairway for a couple minutes on 13. A lady stopped to ask us questions on a hole towards the end and I got the impression that people use the course as their local park. There were dog prints in sand traps and constantly a walker or biker riding by. I like that reston has communal spaces but for me this ain’t it. I have been looking into a club membership in the area and reston is extremely close so it was near the top of my list. I have taken classes here, I practice here and I like the course enough. Its not challenging necessarily and the greens are tremendously slow but it is in good condition, cost effective and fun. After this experience I have absolutely crossed reston off the list lol.
Extra fees for cart
Misleading information on Golfnow since the golf course does not honor the inclusive cart fee stated on Golfnow deal.
3 stars for a course with ups and downs
I've been hearing a lot of grief about Reston National lately, so I wanted to give it a try and see for myself. I booked a 7:40am Saturday tee time, showed up about 15 minutes beforehand, and hit a few balls off the mat before heading out to walk the course ($20 to ride... no thank you).
In terms of pros, the course is in pretty good shape. The holes have some interesting layouts (crossing a major road twice and the tee box by the road on 17 is a little weird though). The blind shots aren't crazy, the greens are in pretty good shape, the bunkers were ok for a public course after rain, and generally I felt like the course is a fair play for the price.
In terms of cons, there were two big ones. The first was the pace of play. While I really appreciated that a ranger was out there trying to move people along, a near 5 hour round that early in the morning was rough. Having to wait so much throws off your game, which then backs everyone up. I know most public courses are experiencing long round problems, but 5 hours was just too much.
The second big problem was the bugs. We had constant swarms of gnats around our heads constantly to the point that I would have to step back from shots on several occasions after one flew in my eye. I know it is nature, but I don't encounter those type of problems at places like Herndon down the road.
Overall, Reston National played pretty decent. If you can catch a good deal and avoid busier times, you can have a good time.
Way too $$$ for what it is
Alright at best but needs a lot of improvement to justify $90 range. Greens were bad--lumpy and extremely extremely slow. Fairways are green but need to be cut and sharper cut at rough edge, it just bleeds together. Bunkers are a little firm, they need a good raking each morning.
