Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club
About
Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club offers the traditional links course reminiscent of those found in the British Isles, situated amidst Virginia's horse country. The club gets its name from the land's former use, a raspberry field. The scenic terrain overlooks to Catoctin Mountains and there are still a few raspberry bushes dotting the course. By far the layout's most formidable challenges come from the deep, stacked pot bunkers that make it truly feel like a classic Scottish golf course. There are also water hazards on a few holes. The course's signature is the par-4 third hole, which is long but plays downhill all the way. The 10th hole, another par 4, is one of the toughest. The landing area is generous off the tee but there is a creek and pond to the left and fairway bunkers on the right.

Not worth the $
Conditions were fair (poor for the $). We have had too much rain and all courses are struggling with that but courses a lot less expensive that Raspberry Falls are in better shape. Several T-boxes were muddy. Lots of missing grass in the fairways and roughs. Also don't like the blind hazards on 9 and 18. On 9 as you approach the green appears like there is a path across the hazard for your second shot. Well there isn't and I don't recall any flags. A perfect 2nd shot goes right into the unseen hazard. Cheap. On 18 you have to hit to the green through a small clearing in the woods and on the shot leading up to that one you have no idea where you should hit to to have a view of the pin, green, and bunches of huge traps that are on the other side. I hit to near the 150 marker (supposedly a target) and all I could see was about half the green and none of the traps.
worth the trip
The course is a beautiful track with very scenice holes. The condition could have been better though. The greens were just airiated as well. Would like to play it again in the fall.
Greens Were an Aerated Mess
Reserved the tee-time through GolfNow. There was no clear cut mention that the greens had been aerated. They were a damaged, bumpy mess. I would blame it on the weather, but I have played several area courses in the area (Worthington Manor, Westfields, Stonewall) that are in much, much better shape.
Was wet. But still great condition. Great views. I love the course and the lay out. Risk reward and makes you think your misses to minimize damage. Highly recommend.
It’s Worth It
You will find slightly better conditions at Laurel Hills, you will find slightly better service at Westfields, and you may find a slightly better value at Stonewall. But Raspberry Falls remains my favorite Northern Virginia public course because it does so many things so well.
The biggest asset of this course over others is layout. Gary Player clearly knows how to design a great one. Every hole has its own character and strategy. From the towering tees on the downhill par-4 3rd to the rising, links-style design of the uphill par-5 10th and one of the best finishing holes in Virginia, you will enjoy the challenge this course brings.
Thankfully, the conditions match the layout here as well/ Having played 18 holes prior at another $50+ course earlier the same day, it was easy to see that Raspberry Falls know how to take care of a golf course’s conditions. From tee-to-green, everything was as good as can reasonably be expected with full, lush, freshly-cut grass, groomed bunkers and greens with just the right amount of pace. In all the times I’ve played here, regardless of wet or dry weather patterns, the course has maintained consistently above-average conditions.
My one complaint for my visit is despite an hot afternoon tee time, there was no beverage cart to be seen. You do get your clubs cleaned while you’re putting out on the 18th which is nice but I would have traded that service for a beverage cart in a heartbeat. There are several water points on the course, so you won’t get too thirsty if water is your thing.
It’s worth mentioning the practice facilities here are second-to-none and they come with the relatively hefty greens fee. I wasn’t thrilled about paying nearly $60 for a weekday twilight rate but in the end, the experience is worth the price of admission. And the 4.5+ hours it takes to play.

A 5 star course, in all aspects
Top notch all the way, from the bag drop person, to the pro shop, to the starter, and the cart lady. All very enthused about their jobs. Course is exceptional, no 2 holes similar, and all housing sit far back from the course itself. 5 tee boxes to choose from, based on your ability. Pace of play was excellent, about a 4 hour round. Last 2 holes were bad, as three small groups merged into an eight some. Last hole took about 30 minutes to complete. Then, the group didn't leave from behind the green, milling around. Turns out they were members, who apparently had no consideration for other golfers. Oh well, we wouldn't let their lack of class mar the day.
Course is as good as other higher priced courses. Play it if you can.
Thanks
Pace of play was great and the course was in its usual great condition. Staff was friendly and helpful.
Excellent course, great value!!
I play a lot of golf in the DC area, some may call me an aficionado. In all my local experiences, I have never seen such a great value. The course was in great shape and we played our round in 4 hours with no trouble. It was a busy day, but the starter (Byron?) was consistently making his rounds, very friendly ranger. The pros in the shop gave note-worthy service as well. I would recommend this course to anyone in the DC area who is looking for a private-club experience and course, for a public course rate.
This was the first time that I played this course and have heard great things for the past 3 years. My wife and I decided on a late tee time with the hope the place would be quiet and we could zoom around the course quickly. Unfortunately, we were very wrong and it was very crowded and the staff had difficulty managing the amount of people there.
To be fair, it was a beautiful day and everyone was looking to get out but we teed off 25 minutes late and the range was empty with their complementary golf balls. I joined others walking out to the range to pick up balls. With a course of this reputation in the DC area I would be quite embarrassed of this sight and the general mayhem around the first tee. The front nine took 2.5 hours to complete and the group in front of us was still on the tee when we pulled up for the next hole. From what I could tell, there was no specific group that was was poor and we were playing in a foursome taking our time.
Course conditions were what you could expect of any course on a beautiful weekend day at the end of the day. Chewed up and bumpy greens but I would not hold it against the course. Some tee boxes were really bad however, mainly just dirt and mud.
Course lay out was interesting and fun with every hole memorable. This was a major positive.
I am scheduled to play in a tournament next Sunday here and expect pace of play to be much better and the conditions to be better. I am rating the course tougher due to the regard it holds among many that I talk to and play with. I would say that I am resoundly disappointed in this experience but would give it a pass because it seemed like a perfect storm of things working against the course.
Great twilight round
Enjoyed our round out at Raspberry Falls as usual. Course was in good shape, save for some grass clippings in the rough due to all the heavy rain we have had recently. Not a really big issue since those should be gone soon. Fairways were in great shape, and greens were in great shape as well. If you can withstand the traffic getting there, it is worth a twilight round. We paid $34, and that felt like a steal. No other courses will you pay that low and get the same quality of course. We had NOBODY in front, and nobody behind. Made for a really good day out there. We will be back!
Fun course
Had a great time yesterday. First cut a little long but shouldn’t have been in there anyway. Great greens course in great shape.
Great course
Raspberry is always a great experience and it’s rare that you get a wide open course with expansive views in Northern VA without homes hovering over the course.
The only knock I have was not that the rough off the fairway was brutal, but there were way too many grass clippings and clumps off the fairway that made it almost impossible to find your ball when it should have been easily findable.
All in all, always a great time at Raspberry.
Great course
Enjoyed the round and the treatment from the staff!
Very fun and very pretty course with fun, varied houles
This was a very nice course with great amenities and facilities. The staff was great upon arrival and all throughout the day.
The range, you had to hit off the mats which was not great, but it is spring time and they are trying to get the grass to grow in on the range.
The Bunkers well nicely maintained and all were raked. The fairways were beautiful and lush. Thr rough was a challenge because the grass was long and thick. I lost a couple balls in the rough just because the rough was quite long and very lush.
The greens were smooth and consistent. The greens have lots of slopes and undulations. I loved that very few ball marks were left um-repaired ont eh greens.
Overall a very nice course with great service.
