Same Old Algonkian, not a bad thing
Weather was a bit on the warm side, but all in all not a bad day. Typical Algonkian course conditions, tee boxes, fairways, and fairways were both plush and very good. Keep it in the fairway because the rough is very full and thick. Greens were plush also, and held shots well, but as is always the case here is they are a bit on the slow side, very true, just not fast. Not sure I would pay the $65ish they want as their posted rate, but if you can get it for $55 or less give it a chance.
A fair price for what you get
Course is rather long from the whites but too short from the blues. Course gets a little buggy b.c I;s near the river. Practice balls need to be updated (newer balls). Course was rather wet in places but overall the course was in good shape.
Algonkian May282016
First and Second grass cut unkept when I played, they're overgrown, not usual the case.
Nice but Long Course
I've played this course about 4 times a year over the last two years, and have always enjoyed the round. The course was in good condition given the rainy spring weather. The course is longer at the white tees (6600 yd) than most courses, so expect to rely on your short game to get close for one putt pars. The course can be wet, with accumulated water in the rough. Expect cart path only if it has rained in the last 48 hours.
Never Again in the Spring!
In all honesty, if I had gone to the extra effort to look at the scorecard before playing this course, I would not have bothered subjecting myself to this punishment. :| This is my most strong recommendation; Don't even touch this course in soft conditions! This is my honest opinion. This course is unfairly long for the average golfer and too long even for a single digit handicapper like myself to enjoy. Again, I'm referencing soft conditions. Forget the opening hole because it's an aberration at 332 yds. Little did I know how good I had it upon beginning this round. From then on out, basically every par 4 is 380 yds minimum, and the average is 393 yds!! Sorry, but the architect of this course really didn't do the average golfer any favors. You have to give folks a break and throw in at least 3-4 par 4's around 340-360. The best example was #9 where they had the white tees set back to about 440yds. With a no roll in the fairway, a slight headwind, and the pin set as far back as it would go... that hole played almost 460 yds! Ridiculous, and very poor judgement on the course's behalf. Except for one par 3 at 160 yds, the others were 178, 199, and 217. IMO... again unfairly long. I will admit the par 5's were reasonable and get-able. They averaged about 490 yds.
On this golf course, under soft conditions, it was just a really annoying grind of a round and wasn't much fun at all. I will most likely not return to this golf course, but if I do I will certainly play the gold tees. Speaking of which... forgetting the par 3's, there are 11 holes where the average distance between the gold and white tees is 83 yds!! That's just poor design. There's plenty of room to work with to create some reasonable, varying tees for the guys playing the whites, which would greatly increase the enjoyability of this course.
For points of reference only: I'm 49, 8 handicap, driver 230-240, 3 wood 210-220, 7 iron 155-160, SW 100.
This course is OLD SCHOOL but very challenging
Algonkian has transformed into a great muni course with the change over to bermuda grass fairways. I was playing this back in the 60s as the old PEPCO course and it didn't have the appeal to me that it does today from the senior tees.
I especially like the pro Ted and his training partner Greg. Both very knowledgable about the basics of the swing and mechanics as well as course management.
Better than expected
I am normally used to this course being packed, slow, and unmanageable roughs. The course was in good condition with manageable roughs. Decent pace of play. Need to get rid of some of the dead trees.
Too many walkers
The course it self is nice wide open not to hilly. They have to many walkers that slow other down and you can't get a rhythm. The foxes that are on number 10 thru 13 make it very scary they go in your cart and are not afraid so if playing by yourself you have to keep an eye on them and knocks of your concentration. Lots of deer also and lots of dear droppings. Green and fairways cut good it was cart path only the day I played didn't understand that since it had not rained and the ground was hard . I would play there again as long as I get a deal from Golf now but other wise not.
Gem of a course
What a great municipal course!! Fantastic layout, large greens that made it easy to score, and beautiful fairways. The course was like playing 2 different 9 holes courses - first 9 was flat with lots of doglegs and the back 9 had much more elevation but still easy to walk. If you have food, watch out the foxes will raid it - seriously! I can't wait to play again, especially at these prices!!
Old Stand By
Algonkian is a stand by and considered our home course. Laid back, enjoyable. Can get busy. Well maintained greens and fairways. LOTS of deer.
Nice. Go!
Great first experience
The staff and course overall was great. A municiple course that's very forgiving (couldn't lose your ball) but still fun to play. The greens were aerated and really horrible (could easily miss a 2footer) / just take the gimmie's on such a day. Still, very busy early morning with people who love to golf created a good atmosphere, even though we were complaining about the group in front for most of the morning for being too slow. The Marshall came around twice and eventually sped things up a bit. though.
Great course
I am a beginner and found this course to be very forgiving. Great place to practice and perfect your play.
Updating with photo
Most recently played in mid-July. Here's a photo of the 12th hole--a scenic par three that plays slightly downhill.
Decent Course
The course was nice but kind of boring for me for $60. No holes that wowed me!
Good golf
It was a good round of golf. Back nine bunkers good have been softer.
Algongkian is a winner!
For a public course it gives you all you want. Several holes on the front are very tight and there is definitely a premium on keeping it in the fairway. In some cases even that isn't enough because of the trees that frame the holes. Par threes are very challenging due to length, even from the white tees. All in all it was in good shape and we had a great time as our round only took 4 hours on a Sunday afternoon teeing off at 12.
One of the Better Area Munis
The price is right and the course is very well maintained. The staff goes out of its way to make sure you have a good experience - from the starter who greets you as you walk up, to the counter folks who take care of you inside.
nice day
Course is super shape...greens a bit slow..but overall in lovely condition. Golf Now rate of @$28 was great deal.
very good condition
greens were somewhat slow, but due to recent rain... fairways were good but poa in them? Bunkers could have been better raked....some bunkers had no rakes... but over all course was very good condition....
Flat course with treed
Fairways are wide and easy to drive . Greens are not difficult. Great course with a great view.
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
In my opinion, more walkers is a great attribute. And there's no better way to get "in rhythm" than walking with your playing partners.
No reason walking is any slower--especially at a flatter course like the 'Gonk. For most foursomes, it is often faster, with each player able to go directly to their own ball.
