This course is well maintained
Except the course is unexpectively wet. I am satisfied.
Terrible course conditions, should not have been open
I don't mind playing in bad weather but course conditions are completely another thing. I realized it rained but to lose 4 balls - 3 in the middle of the fairway - because your ball plugged so much it completely buried in mud and standing water shows to me the course wasn't playable. Standing water on the greens made for inputtable surfaces in quiet a few areas. Don't have to worry about me coming back, spend your money somewhere else
Long but straight
Weather was great but it rained two days prior. All the tee boxes were closed so we played temporary tees that were also extremely wet, almost every shot plugged in the fairway. It is probably a good course in the summer.
Great beautiful course
Love playing this course. Well maintained. Just wish the people that played there were faster. Got stuck behind two slow players. Thanks and I will come back
very good value for the money
played with a member of the staff who was off on that day very friendly helped us find our way around the golf course since this was our first time
A Tale of Two 9's
This course is essentially in my back yard, and I've frequently visited it because of convenience and the challenge the the course presents each time I'm there. The facilities are in very good condition, with the clubhouse and other small course aesthetics kept up in good knick. The course itself has been maintained well, and has many different challenges, incorporating water, sand, rough, and wooded areas in order to create a unique challenge to every hole. The front 9 and back 9 have two different personalities, with the front containing many fairways that parallel each other and generally flatter terrain. The back 9 is more rolling, with a greater risk of hazard involved in your play.
Poor Experiences
We were not informed about aeration prior to arrival and were told we had to play the front nine twice. Once we finished the front nine we were informed it would be an hour wait to play our second nine. Management was unfriendly and overall treated us like the aeration was our problem. I will not return to this course.
was not fun this time
There is an issue between making the tee times sometimes and the course condition, usually is just fine, this time there was nothing on the tee times site about the course was only using 9 holes.
I got there I pay and when I check in the starter say, you playing the back nine twice the front nine is close, g thanks at lot how about a sing or something before you pay.
then I say sure OK he say you has to go the tee box you suppose to go out with mr. pong pong pong, yes those were the names I saw them.
I go to the tee box, there is no 3 some, they are all 4 somes, and it since they are just finishing 9 and turning around and re-pairing themself with their friends.
So I waited, the started guy walk a few times took a look at me and say nothing, I kept using the practice green, trying to see if there was a 2 some so I can walk to but nope that never happen, by 11:10, I decided to just leave, my tee time was at 10:27
I figure I had no chance I was going to go anywhere.
So this time was just terrible, so I lost my money and wasted half of day for no reason., since I decided to just walk away, there was no reason to go inside and try to get a refund, since it was my choice to leave.
when is that bad and crowded and there is no control at the tee box, you guys might want to keep an eye on things, is not the first time that I has to go alone because the "oriental looking crow" doesn't want to play with me, they want to play with their own.
and this time is exactly what happen, they finish the 18th hole which is back nine and repair with the ones waiting on the tee box.
Excellent conditions for the area
A solid parkland course well insulated from roads and houses in an area regional park. It's right next to the Potomac river but no views, just a nice setting with wildlife.
Course can be difficult because of narrow fairways and thick trees lining most holes. I played in the spring and the rough was very penal but in late summer it had thinned out a bit is more playable.
Front nine is flat with a few doglegs and long par fives while the back nine has some elevation changes and a creek that comes into play on two or three holes with two reachable par fives. I particularly like holes 11-13
11: lay-up tee shot to a wide open landing area since the creek comes in at about 250 yds, then a mid-long iron approach uphill.
12: gorgeous slight downhill par -3 with a tough bunker short of the green
13: dogleg right par-5 that's very reachable with a good tee shot. A ton of room to the right of the green for the uphill approach.
These holes epitomize most of the course, need to keep it straight and long to have a good look at birdie, but there is not too much trouble to blow up your round. Expect to make some bogeys, but very few hazards or OB.
Greens were good early in summer but bumpy and slower last weekend, hopefully they are rolled/cut soon.
Grumpy staff
Looked forward to golf at this course on a beautiful day. First impression was quite negative as had to deal with a rude guy at the counter. While the place was nearly empty, he seemed upset for some reason. After snarling a few mumbled words, he chastised me for "checking in too early" (30 minutes before tee time) and advised I shouldn't come in until 20 minutes before my time.
Starter was gruff but not rude. Overall though, not the most personable people to represent the course.
Paired with some nice guys and the golf was fine. The greens are very slow. Many holes on the front nine are quite tight and good drives are at a premium. Overall layout is nothing special.
Not a course I'll play again anytime soon.
Great Public Course
One of several by the Fairfax Parks department, Algonkian was in excellent shape this weekend, with hardly even a divot in the fairways and greens well-manicured. Only drawback is that the bunkers tend to be quite hard. Superb value for the money and a great course for intermediates.
Course condition
Well is was dry and not really good condition on fairways but most was not bad paist
Good Muni for the money
Overall the course is in good condition, except the bunkers are very inconsistent, one hole will have mud/hardpan in the bunkers and the next will have fresh sand (it seems that only the holes in view of the clubhouse get the sand). The course provides a challenge without being punishing. Being a muni, the pace of play can be slow, even on a Wednesday. With the GolfNow price, it is well worth it.
nice open course
Had a great time playing this course. Good conditon, wide open but still challenging....Go try it.
Staff could be better. Nice course though
Slow pace on a Saturday. This is the second time I've played the course and both times had a problem with the starter. First time he gave away our tee time and we had to wait another hour. This time, we show up and there are no carts. He keeps yelling that we need to start but he gave away 10 carts to a large group that wasn't teeing off for another hour. Not the way I want to start a round. Shame because the course is a pretty good value.
Great Value
Great course. I will play here again. The course was in great condition. You MUST put your ball in the fairway or you will be pitching out of the trees. Plays long but has large greens. I can't say a bad thing about the staff, the course or the conditions.
Great Experience
When you arrive - you are greeted by knowledgeable and friendly people from cashier to starter. They all make you feel like you belong there. The course was well maintained. No pressure to hit or wait ever the round was 3hours
Better than reviews I read
Reading the reviews from a few years ago I was somewhat expecting a less than stellar visit. Contrary to expectations, this was a great course to play. Some of the fairways had minor rough patches, but the greens were honestly some of the best I've played in northern virginia, and I do get to play some of the "premier" courses around here. Staff, including the starter was friendly and ran the show well. Food availability was good. Course itself presented a decent challenge and as advertised the deer were in abundance. Won't hesitate to play more rounds here.
A Good Solid Track
I play Algonkian often. I'm never disappointed. Stay out of the trees and score well on a course whose condition improves every year. A very good value, a great friendly staff, and a pretty nice to hang around. It's hard not to like Algonkian.
Friendly Course
This was the first time I played this course and found it very enjoyable. The greens and fairways are in very good shape and helped me overcome my lack of course knowledge.
The staff was friendly and made me feel welcome. I will definitely play the course again.
