A Nice Course by the Potomac River
Algonkian is located in a regional park, and is adjacent to Trump National Country Club. The access road, Algonkian Parkway, is beautifully decorated with flowers and trees. The course was not so difficult, but some of par-3 holes exceeded 200 yards and were challenging. Some reviews said tha playing would be very slow and the entire course muddy, but that was not the case with us. I generally had a good time with two young unskillful guys.
Simple but challenging
Been wanting to play here awhile, finally got out for a round. Everyone in the foursome was amazed, for the price it's a great layout. And for how simple it appears, it was actually pretty challenging. Trying to hit full shots out of the rough most of the time is a no-go, bad shots are punished but not to an extreme degree. My only gripe was about 75% of the traps I'd say were more like mud with a dusting of sand on them, very few were playable (fortunately I only found two with my shots). I've always thought if you're not going to maintain traps, don't have them. But definitely a great course for a great price, I'll play again soon.
Well worth the money
I really like this course. For the price, it's one of the best bargains in the area. The course is well maintained and is fairly challenging while still being suitable for players of all levels. Unfortunately, this can lead to a fairly slow pace of play, but the starter and rangers do a decent job of keeping that at a tolerable level. I'd definitely recommend playing here.
below average
This course does not drain very well even though it rained over a week ago. Mud balls, greens we OK but fairways could use some work, some dry patches, inconsistent bunkers, they really need to put new sand in some of the bunkers . Also they were renovating hole # 5 (par 3) and they put the pin on the fairway with no yardage to indicate how far it is.
Algonkian
The course was in great shape considering all the rain we have had lately. Fairways were clean, rough was very difficult due to no mowing and lots of mud. Greens were long and fuzzy but definitely puttable. We had a great time even tho it took forever to play. It is a great course to walk which many were doing adding to the time.
Not worth the rates
It's a fairly long, straight course that is in need of care. Everything was over grown; greens were slow, rough 5-6 inches average, & fairways wouldn't roll much. A few holes had some character to them but for the most part just straight. For the price you pay, go to a higher quality course that charges the same or lower rates.
is a nice course
I pay for 18th holes, but only go to play 3, it was so slow, there was 3 groups of 4 some, that I was told to let go trough, before teeing off.
Then there was this lady and a dude, who have no bussines being on the golf course yet, it took them, about 20 minutes to finish the first hole.
even longer for the second hole par 5,
infact I tee off at 10:33
and by the time I finish the third hole it was 11:30,
I decided it wasn't worthy, as the groups one hold ahead of them were all so slow. also.
If you want to play this course, your better chance is to try after 11am, anything before that you would be stuck there for a long time.
To clear out, the line above:
when I say that they had no bussines being on the golf course, everyone if you pay your fee, should be out there, but if you never touch a club, take a lesson or two, and then try it, just be nice to the group behind you, let them trough and you can enjoy your day, and play as slow as you want.
I was not offer to play trough, even though I was there for the 3 holes I play, courtesy, is the key.
Great time
Had a great time. This is one of the better courses around the area. Course is nice staff is friendly and rates are reasonable. Keep up great job. Will def be coming back with friends.
Beautiful day. Corse needs work.
Pace of play was 4:25 for 18
on a Sunday.
Traps had a local rule rake and re drop
Fairways were spotty
Greens slow and lots of pohana
Fairly open and forgiving.
Wet
The course was in OK conditions, but it was very wet. Played after work and had a 4:00 tee time. Finished in about 4 hours. Paid $31 so not too bad
85 and sunny...
Great day for golf when there is a slight breeze, 85 degrees and sunny. First time at this course and was a great first experience. Course staff very nice, clean carts, and even cleaner greens. Lots of deer throughout woods.
Warmup course
Not worth their full price rate. Average park authority course for a warmup round
Winter Rules!
It's winter golf with some ice on the course. But hey, who's complaining given the weather. What's important was that it was very playable and the greens were in unbelievable shape even after the rain, snow, and ice that visited us during the past 3 weeks.
Nice course,poor management
Interesting layout, current good course conditions, particularly the greens.Clueless pro shop personnel and course rangers.
I never saw a golf course with so many deer!
I normally like playing this course since it is relatively long with some tight fairways especially on the front nine. Unfortunately due to the rain the past weekend, the course played extremely long and definitely on the muddy side. There are more deer here almost to the point that you could actually hit one off the tee. I'll be back to play again after the course has a chance to dry out.
Easy course, recommend beginner.
Easy course, mostly flat. Weather was in the mid 80s with slight humidity. Course in very good condition and the greens in very good playable condition.
Good Muni Course
Not the hardest course but a very good municipal golf course. The course is well maintained, with the greens, tees, and fairways in great shape. However, the condition of the bunkers were mixed, with some having new sand but most having almost no sand at all. I will be playing this course again.
This course is ok, for the price.
This course is an ok value if you are looking to go out and work on a few shots on your golf game. The greens are in pretty bad condition so this is not a place to work on your putting skills. With that said however there are not many places on this course where you can't take a shot, even if you end up in the trees.
In Good Shape for a Muni
Algonkian is set on a regional park, which is nice because it is isolated and there are no houses around. That also makes for a scenic golf course with lots of wildlife - lots of deer and even a fox. The starter (check in with starter first) was very friendly and made us feel welcome. Pro shop staff was less so and either ignored or didn't recognize my Golfnow rate (which I didn't realize until after the round) so I paid more than I should have. Elevated driving range from mats, but the mats are in good shape and you might hit a deer grazing in the range if you're not careful! The course is rather tight, and a lot of the holes are straight-away and basically back and forth in parallel (this the photos all look like the same hole. That could be dangerous, but there are plenty of mature trees between all the holes to keep errant balls from becoming missiles to the other fairways. Said errant balls can usually be found, so practice your knock-down 3-iron shots on the range... unless you are deadly straight off the tee box, you will use that shot often. Tee boxes were mostly in good shape, as were the fairways - nothing to really complain about for a municipal course. The greens were soft and held the balls well, so you can be a bit aggressive but, perhaps because they were soft, putts didn't always roll true and the break was less than expected, but any such trouble was difficult to identify. One thing I noticed was that the players respected the course, as most all ball marks were repaired and divots filled... rarely have I seen that even in high-dollar courses. A nice course, but the $63 rate (with cart) is a bit pricey for the area. Still. it is a good course that is reasonably challenging. I would play it again, and the wife liked it, but would put a price tag of $50 or less on it as there are other courses that play better for the current price.
