Hole #9 "Vista" Photo submitted by David2342364 on 07/17/2013
Overall great. Would overall recommend. Just don't like certain holes on the front 9.
Overall great. Would recommend. Just don't like certain holes on the front 9 - a lot of blind shots, which can be dangerous on a somewhat crowded course. I wish the tee boxes were more of a flat surface. On back 9 seems a little dangerous how holes are closely situated and face one other but nothing can really be done about that. Just be watchful of errant shots. On 18 there are a lot of range balls on the right side of the fairway. Watch your head if you drive one up that side. We did get caught behind a foursome that were playing tees that were inappropriate for them and, despite telling us they would pick up their pace on two occasions, they did not. Don't know if any staff members spoke with them. Course otherwise well maintained. Staff very friendly. Clubhouse nice. Practice facilities nice. Very good value. Would play again.
Quite challenging.
Many holes are blind shots. If it is the first time playing the course, you probably want to play with someone who has experience. They can tell you the places to hit to stay out of trouble. The little course map in back of the scorecard is useless. Greens are challenging also. Ball broke the wrong way more than once.
This Course is challenging and a good experience
Went as a 3 some on a great deal though Golfnow to this course in Sparta, NJ; We were running a little late thanks to an accident on the highway so I called ahead to the course; They were very understanding and asked us to not worry so props to the manager and the Pro Shop.
When we checked in they loaded up the carts immediately and sent us on our way - We had a late Tee Time (4:20 PM) but by the time we started it was closer to 4:45 PM...There was no Marshall herding us around (though they were present and making sure the play clock didnt sag on us) and we were able to take our time and still catch up to the group ahead of us.
The Course as a whole is very challenging for the weekend hacker - the greens have narrow fairways but are short - You can hit the greens of several Par 4's with a good 3W or a Driver; but the true adventure starts on the par 5's - from the 2nd Hole that plays uphill all the way; to the 4th hole which pulls you through a blind tee, an extremely narrow fairway until the Jaw Dropping drop to the green - SkyView is worth playing just for that hole - Truly amongst the 2 best holes on a course in NJ that I have played on. The other memorable ones are the 9th with a panoramic view of the surrounding mountainside and the 10th with the old barn and a baffling lie (For the first time player), and a completely downhill 18th with strategically placed trees.
The overall course is hilly and the fairways and greens are in excellent conditions (Barring 1 or 2 that were being Aerated). The whole course teases you with the possibilities y being accessible, but if you relax for a second, the course bites you without warning with its vicious pin positions and treacherous slopes. We didn't get a chance to experience the club house but overall just for the playing experience it is an awesome trip.
Great views
This is an interesting course with magnificent views of the mountains. Some of the holes are quite steep and there are a lot of blind shots to the fairway and green. Be careful going down the path on Hole #4 on wet pavement. Almost completely spun out and had an accident. Overall, I would highly recommend play but from the blues. The whites are quite short at 5611 yards.
Excellent golf course for retirees.
This's my 1st time playing this golf course, which was well maintained. The staff on the course was very friendly and helpful.
Hills and dells and a ton of rocks
very tough with many blind spots. On hot days bring water there is none available on the course except at the snack bar on the turn.
Great views. A must play at least once
A lot of blind shots so local knowledge is very helpful. Many of the fairways have densely populated wooded/grassy areas. Some are marked OB and some have red stakes. Most have nothing and I think that they are lateral hazards because you can't even enter to look for a ball, yet alone hit out. Markings would be appreciated.
Nice course, too pricey
I live locally and admit this is one of the nicer courses around. It is challenging with a handful of blind tee shots. The course runs through a nice neighborhood and offers gorgeous views of the surrounding areas.
With all that being said, the price of this course is way too much, especially compared to other nearby courses. It is no nicer than Farmstead, Minebrook, Flanders Valley, or Berkshire Valley, yet costs considerably more (even with an online booking discount through GolfNow.)
I like this course and will play again, just not frequently. The "fun factor" that this course generates from its challenging terrain is the only selling point. I would rather visit some of the other surrounding courses on a more repeat basis and play SkyView when I feel like being challenged.
Worth It
Played in the beginning of July with three other guys and the course was great. I had read other reviews that mentioned the blind shots and i didn't realize just how blind you really were. I enjoyed the added difficulty but I probably lost half a dozen balls. Overall the course was in great condition; the greens were incredibly firm but rolled true, the views were amazing and all the fairways were well kept and mowed. I played for less than $30 and it was defiantly worth the drive and the money.
First time here and would like to play another time before making judgments.
This was the first time to this course. The course is very hilly and it was cart path only...which I did not feel was needed. Only a few holes were actually wet. Secondly, the greens were so firm that you had about a 2ft window on the front of the green to land your shot or it would roll right off the back. One of the staff members said the course was playing about 10 strokes harder than normal that day, don't know if that was true. Thirdly, there are a lot of blind shots. If it is your first time there, you will want to really be careful navigating the course. I will go back and give it another chance...maybe I caught it on a bad day. Overall, it wasn't the most enjoyable day of golf I've ever had.
A short but very difficult golf course.
Ahhhh, Skyview. The name says it all. The course is pretty, with pretty views. Just to give you an idea of how nice they are, while standing on the 9th and 18th tee boxes, you can see the High Point Monument if you look closely. The course is not long at all, but it plays long because of the many elevation changes. The condition of the course I honestly I thought was comparable to a private club. Except for the bunkers which for some reason were really hard. The clubhouse/pro-shop were nothing special. I had a bite to eat after my round, and the food (Buffalo Chicken Wrap with Fries) was decent. A fun course, which (Sean the head pro there said to me) It's a course that bites you and has character. I thought that was very true.
Too Many Blindshots
The course itself is in excellent condition - fairways, greens, and tees are all in great shape.
Two Complaints:
1. Too many blindshots. It seemed like half of the holes had a blindshot
2. The yardage markers on the scorecard and plaque at the teebox are not consistent - so you don't know how far the hole really is.
good course
fairway maintained well。course shape beautiful especially the 4th hole
greens a little bit slow
generally speaking great course
Very hilly causing awkward shots, some fairways way too close to each other, will not return
I found this course to be very difficult on a number of levels. There are lots of hills and a few steep drop offs resulting in you really not having any idea of where your should go or actually went. Additionally, the first few holes are way too close to the surrounding homes. The scenery is nice is some spots, but in other spots you are completely surrounded by homes (as in the holes are right next to backyards). I'm not a fan of such courses as it seems very easy to hit a house if you hit a bad shot. While the course seemed to be relatively well maintained, I found that holes 8, 15, 16 and 17 to be way too close to each other. For instance, when we were on the 8th hole, the guys on the 15th hole (which runs parallel to the 8th hole) were on our fairway for a significant amount of time. One group actually played onto the wrong green because the fairways and holes are so close to each other that they couldn't tell where to hit the ball. Quite honestly I can't blame them because as a newcomer to the course I was somewhat confused myself. There were some pros to the course. I played during the week for $40, which included a cart. Also, the staff was very cordial. Other than that, though, it really didn't do it for me and I didn't leave feeling like I got a good value. All in all, while some holes are very scenic, the course just didn't do it for me, and you certainly have to play it a number of times before you can have any sense of comfort. I will not repeat, nor will I recommend this course to friends.
Overall fair condition. Hilly course with some quirky holes.
Very hilly. Holes too close together and some places dangerous with range 18th hole is too close to ranges. Other holes have too many players from other fairways.
Different interesting nice.
Very hilly and tough course. A few holes are a bit silly with crazy 150' elevation change and straight uphill and downhill holes but overall very interesting and challenging. Not your everyday course but fun to play and well maintained. Nice staff.
Scenic, short yet tricky course...
I went to this course just a few days ago (March), and they had just opened for the year. It reminds me of a little Wild Turkey in terms of the layout and rolling hills. The par 4s are definitely short (315 to 380 or so) and narrow, but there are some beautiful holes. I used my driver on just about every par 4, leaving me with a 90 and less yard lob wedge into the green. Next time I play there, I will be sure to hit long irons/hybrids off the tee. You do not want to miss long over the green on almost every hole, or you're in trouble. Large boulders are on some holes, which gives the course a kind of 'cut out of the mountain' feel, which I liked. Fairways and greens are bent grass- very nice. A few challenging holes (#2 is a par 5 on a constant incline- you're teeing off basically onto a hill and hitting your second and third shots off your back foot). Hole 4 is also very difficult, but nice par 5. Blind tee shot to an extremely narrow, funneled fairway. You're left with an approach to the edge of a cliff where you're shooting to the green blind over the cliff about 80 feet below you. I somehow birdied it not knowing what in the world I was doing. Overall, definitely worth the money- The Pro, Sean, was a pleasant fellow. Very informative and friendly.
No flat lies
Mountian goats and other hill climbing mammels will love this place. Takes a few times around to figure this place out . Bllind tee shots over hills, raised greens, deep bunkers. Greens in great condition despite being recently core aerated. Not too long, a few holes play long from the tips though.
Rude membership and not worth the money
We showed up on a Friday afternoon and went to drop our bags off when a "member" started yelling at us because he saw we had a small cooler for our waters. I appreciate the policy of no water coolers, but the attitude from this member was unnecessary. I've never been to a public or semi-private course that doesn't allow you to drink your own water. . The course is gimmicky and I would rather spend my money playing Wild Turkey or Bowling Green. This course isn't worth the headache or attitude.
Excellent Condition and Views
I played this course several times in the Summer and Fall of 2012 and enjoyed the layout and the views. You have to play it once or twice due to a couple of unique hole layouts, but it is very manageable once you know it. The fairways and greens are in excellent shape, and it has the best views of any NJ course I have played. Big hitters will have an advantage on a few holes, but the course relies more on accuracy and positioning. Bring your short game! One of my favorite courses in the area and I plan to play it frequently.
