The course is very beautiful. And challenging. If you play the correct tees for you, it will be enjoyable as well as a good test. I’m 74 years old hit my driver 195 and probably should have played the gold tees instead of the blue. ( my index 13.1)
The one major complaint I have is that the greens were extremely slow.I’m sure they have their reasons for not cutting and rolling the greens, but it was difficult making any outs outside 10 feet.
However still enjoyed the round 4 stars instead of 5 due to condition of greens
Course
Great course, friendly staff..
Need maybe some beverage carts on the course
Good course -
Everything was Great top- bad sad traps & divots due to poor clientele not cleaning up after themselves
Kevin B’s Review
Course was pretty dry today when prior to going public was much better irrigated. Tees all in nice shape. 2nd cut of rough, was challenging with thick grass. Challening greens were all very true rolling. Traps were quite nice- no pebbles or obstructions. Too many prior players did not rake out the traps after hitting. Expensive to play, but we’ll worth it. I’m definitely going to play there again!
“Officially a public course”
This once fine country club is taking on a public course complexion but with a closed clubhouse and skeleton crew at a lofty price. Not worth it anymore. And watch the potholes going in and especially out. The property owners are just taking advantage of public golfers while they wait on development later this year.
Great layout, great conditions, slow greens, no amenities.
As other reviews have mentioned, Tam O Shanter is a solid track, great layout, variety of holes (look/layout/length), great conditions, but overall slow but smooth greens. Due to Tam’s impending sale and course closure, they seem to be putting in the bare minimum. Halfway house is a joke, no pro shop, no beverage cart, basic range, and for $99 on a Friday, that price is at the top end of LI public golf. I’d still recommend the course to a friend for the course alone, but understand what you’re signing up for.
Slow as could be, layout pretty good
The course layout was good and the maintenance was okay (greeens inconsistent but largely slow). The problem was pace of play. A 7:40 tee time took 5:25 hours and there were no staff out to help keep pace. Waited to tee off for 5 + minutes from 7-18.
Great layout .
Greens were good but need some work. 5 plus hour round. No rangers. Groups were hitting multiple balls off the tee and no one around to speed up slow groups.
Hope They Keep The Course Open
As many have stated, this was a longstanding private club that recently went public. I asked the starter what the plans for the future were and he said that the owners were reviewing their options with a decision to be made by November.
I thought the course layout was excellent with a lot of interesting holes featuring strategic bunkering, doglegs and water hazards. It was a lot of fun to play. The condition of the course itself was very good , however the cart we were given should have been put out to pasture long ago and the on-course bathroom should have been condemned. These issues are easily fixable should ownership decide to keep the course operating. I really hope they do.
