About
Opened in 2001, Great Rock Golf Club is one of the newer golf clubs in Long Island but it feels much older thanks to its scenic landscape of rolling green hills covered with mature forests. The mountainous landscape provides plenty of elevation changes that make it difficult to find a flat lie. At 6,254 yards, the course is short but it is still a challenging round with narrow, tree-lined fairways that demand accuracy. There is hardly any water on the golf course but with strategically placed bunkers, sidehill lies, and towering trees to contend with, golfers will hardly notice the absence of water hazards. Great Rock's signature hole is the challenging 10th. This par-4 beast is a double uphill climb with a seemingly flat green, but if you read it that way, you're in for some trouble.

Terrible conditions
Terrible tee boxes poor greens and no maint on rough. The person who said was good was lying.
I am not playing there again.
Less than mediocre.
Very interesting and challenging layout with many elevation changes, but the condition the course was in terrible condition. Poorly maintained and bumpy greens, grass growing in bunkers, dying tee boxes. This course could be so much better but it seems almost neglected.

Not so Great Rock
Crab grass has taken over this course. Greens have burn marks on them. Tee boxes are shot. This course used to set up nicely into the summer with the greens firming up to play like country course greens. Don’t know what happened but this place is going downhill. It’s a shame.

Great Rock 7/19
4th time running this course this year, and it was at its worst condition today. Crab grass and mushrooms growing on multiple tee boxes. Greens yellowing in some spots and moves really fast. This course has a great layout and is very nice when maintained but it seems as if they are on same maintenance plan now in a heat wave in mid july as they were when I played it in April and May. Wouldnt recommend it in its current condition but at its finest its one of the best publics in Suffolk and they offer randomly discounted times on golfnow 7 days a week along with hot deals which makes it even more worth it but not right now.

Course was great but got caught in a severe thunderstorm after the 9th hole. Suspended play and left course since radar showed another storm approaching. Should have tried to get a rain check for 9 holes but was too wet to try.

Worth a try.
Dan in proshop was great, John was outside tending to landscape. 2 dedicated employees. Workers were observed all over the course getting it in shape. T boxes and fairways were good, greens were hard and fast, bunkers could use some work. Love the layout. Don't believe all negative reports. Can't say enough good about the staff, John and Dan. Course is lucky to have these two as front line ambassadors.

Not So Great Rock
Slow round, 5hrs. Fairways are burnt, greens are in good shape. Need to know the course, lots of blind shots

Needs work
Course has potential, but ownership must improve conditions. They had 12 groups on a beautiful Sunday. I guess everyone else knew about the conditions.

Course getting away
This used to be one of my favorite places to play on LI. There is a general lack of maintenance throughout the whole course. The greens are not as tight as they once were. The bunkers are shaggy. The tee boxes are not cut well. Hopefully they do a better job quickly or this course will go way downhill fast.

Course has a lot of potential, however conditions were below average. Many better public courses nearby in much better shape for the same cost.

Overgrown
It’s been a couple of years since I last played GR. The grounds used to be maintained so much better. Disappointed with the conditions but the greens were as challenging as I remembered. Price was fair for the course given the status of the lack of landscaping.

Don't believe some of the negative reviews.
John in the pro-shop was the most professional and friendliest pro-shop person I've met in a long time. The fairways were good, greens were hard but rolled true. Some of the tee boxes had uncut sprouts of grass. Most of the bunkers had good sand and appeared to have been racked recently. It should be noted that a severe rain had recently rolled thru. Grounds crews were out working all over the course.

Ridiculous
Haven’t played here in 2 years. Gave them enough time to fix the course. It hasn’t rained since Wednesday You would figure a course Rated better than Bethpage Black would have the course playable on a Sunday in the summer. . . Tee boxes hadn’t been mowed for at least a week. They had 4 days to mow the tee boxes. Laziness, because there’s real potential to get this course back in great shape.

Great layout
Before we went here I got nervous from reading all the comments about the rough and greens conditions but after playing this course there’s nothing to worry about. Course was in good shape and maybe if people started fixing their ball marks on the greens they wouldn’t have issues. Greens were fast but not bumpy. Would play again and the layout makes the course play longer.

Good shape, no food or drink on course
I've played this course many times throughout the years. It's an interesting course with lots of cool holes. The course was in pretty good shape, however, there were limited refreshments available. Just chips and Powerade, water, etc. in the pro shop - then they sent someone out on the course. OK, I guess the issue was that they had no beer available.

So very sad to see this course in TOTAL DISREPAIR!
From the moment you drive up and see weeds growing everywhere including through bushes and near the clubhouse, you know somethings wrong. Starter is sour, the pro shop is empty and there’s no one really playing the course. The course is in shambles weeds everywhere, moss growing on the greens, greens in total disrepair, tees with 5 inches of grass. from the moment you drive up and see weeds growing everywhere including through bushes and near the clubhouse you know somethings wrong. There is poison ivy all over the rough, poison oak, rough that’s totally out of control, , sand traps that are empty, sand traps full of rocks, sand traps with grass growing in them. In a nut shell the course is in terrible shape. Such a shame for what used to be a beautiful track. Great Rock is done!
