San Carlos Golf Club

Ok course if you get a deal price. One hour to play the first 3 holes implies a 6 hour round. Foursome in front of us was at least 2 holes behind, but no rangers to speed them up. Moved faster on back nine, but 5 hours on a short course is intolerable.

Overbooked tee times, so allow extra time for not starting at your appointed tee time. Then figure a 4 1/2 -5 hour round as you wait,and wait, your way around the course.

We had a 1:24 tee time and finished after sunset, with every group behind us who’d also spent over $100 to play, not getting finished!

Pace of play was ridiculously slow. Tee off time was 30 minutes behind schedule. 6 hours and still didn’t finish

Character of front nine was plain but conditions were good greens rolled good tee box good and fairways in good condition couldn’t play back nine because pace of play was too slow and I would up being a single and starters didn’t offer a solution rather than going back to the front with I finished in an hour

Too bad I couldn’t play the back!

Paid $125 (actually $375 for the 3 of us) for a nice course, a nice starter, named John.

A young college student was working behind the counter in the pro shop and without even looking up, addresses me like a child.

I believe it was something to the effect as “Hey dude.”…. I am 71 years old and a member at a couple clubs….

I am to understand that he is a student at a nearby university studying golf course management. Apparently he hasn’t taken the class on propriety and etiquette in his journey through his education.

Course is more open than most courses in the area. It’s a great course for a warm up round after some time off because you can hit some off line shots and still find/play the next shot. Course conditions and pace of play were very good. Everyone was respectful and friendly.

Rangers, non existent?

Very helpful and friendly staff who promptly replied to my inquiries in the days ahead of my tee-time, as well as the day of. They accommodated my request to tee off 45mins earlier with another group if I were able to arrive earlier. I couldn't be happier about that, because I was the 3rd last group to have finished 18 despite teeing off at 1:56pm.

The rental clubs they have are fantastic, and they had options for preferred flex/stiffness. The putter was the best I've ever rented. My only issue was that the club rental price $57 after taxes) was nearly as much as the rate I paid for my round - bear in mind the afternoon tee time for a single golfer at a pre-paid online discounted rate.

The course was an great shape. It wasn't overly challenging, which my game appreciated, but it was definitely fun to play and an enjoyable layout. The greens were great - not too fast or slow, but plenty of undulation.

By the time the 4 of us finished our round the sun had fully set - might have been 6:35pm. We were 21mins behind pace after 18, but after 9 we were 17mins behind, so there's certainly an issue to solve for. Is it an issue that prevents enjoyment of playing at San Carlos? Absolutely not.

All in all, very happy with my experience and would definitely play again.
