Pittsburgh National Golf Club
About
Formerly known as Deer Run, Pittsburgh National Golf Club has undergone major renovations since management has changed hands over the years, including complete reconditioning of the greens and the addition of 60 new renovated bunkers. The championship golf course that exists today is more challenging than the original though it has retained the same playability. With no blind shots to be found and wide fairways that are player-friendly, the course is inviting to beginners and also offers a casual but interesting round for more advanced players. During the renovation, the club also added a practice facility that includes a grass driving range with heated hitting stalls for year-round use, it is one of the only public grass ranges in the Greater Pittsburgh area. There is also a putting green and chipping area with sand bunkers.

Fast and true greens
The course was in great condition. The greens were fast but they rolled true. There are a few wet spots but we have had a wet spring. Improvements are being made. Work was taking place on a tee and some traps. The work did not affect play. The basic course layout and hole design is pretty good. I will play here again. On the downside, there are few bare spots near the cart path on and off ramps or small ditches due to erosion. Fix this and we are talking 5 stars!
Great day for golf!!!!
This was a very special Easter Sunday surprise. A good friend of mine had to put his 11 year old lab down the day before. He called and asked if I could play on Easter Sunday. I could not leave him grieving alone so I said yes. Boy was I glad I did. The course was great. The weather was great. The staff was really great. We played as a 2some in just under three hours. I hope it always is as nice as it was that day. Thank you for making a very hard time easier for my friend and myself.
Under Constuction
A lot of the holes and tee boxes were under construction, including the restaurant and bar which is closed. I have played this course many times and in the past it was a very nice, well maintained, as well as challenging. I believe it is under new ownership, so I am hoping they are making positive changes to the course for the future.
Decent golf course but has some issues
Given a horrendous winter the golf course is in decent shape. I give PNGC a thumbs down because the pro shop was sending anyone with the green fees in hand to the first tee - we teed off 15 minutes after our tee time. Pace of play was pathetic - simply because groups were teeing off with absolutely no gaps in times. Twosomes were not paired into foursomes, and we even had a single two groups behind us. Quit after 13 holes because it looked like a 5 1/2 hour round. That is not fun.
Very nice track
Excellent layout and condition for a public course. Even for as early in the year as it is and after a very hard winter the course was in great shape and the greens were awesome. Definitely looking forward to playing many more rounds here this year
Needs Improvement
The condition of this course has improved drastically since the last time I played it 2 years ago. That being said, the pace of play was intolerable, with no rangers whatsoever attempting to speed up play. Very disappointing round of golf.
Went into the clubhouse at the turn (around 430pm) and there was no one to be found. It was a ghost town. If I needed help or had a question, good luck.
Will not be playing this course again this year until they get their business in order, which is a shame, because I really enjoy the layout.
Surprised and pleased
We had to wait an hour because of a frost delay but after we went out, the pace was quick and the course was in great shape.
Much improved
Club fell on hard times in 2010, but with new management the course has made great strides. Thought for the time of year that the course is in great shape. New driving range is suppose to be opening. Can't wait.
Owners need to invest more money in this course
The Course layout is fine, the Cart Paths are a mess.
The Restaurant & Bar used to be an excellent facility but now has signs everywhere saying it is under construction although no evidence of contractors actually doing work and the windows on the Restaurant door are covered to prevent seeing inside the restaurant. Two six packs of beer were all that left in the cooler inside the pro shop and some soft drinks but such a very low inventory made one wonder if financial stress is causing all the missing ingredients needed to make this a 1st class golf course. It is still early in the season and I hope they can get everything back up to speed because otherwise traffic will drop and will make folks concerned about going back to this course
Beautiful golf course
This was by far the best golf corse I've played yet will be back and bring more friends
Course in great shape for December.
We were impressed with the fact that the fairways and greens were virtually leaf free. That is quite an accomplishment and very appreciated. Nice layout. Good challenge.
Double Booked every tee time
Every tee time was double booked with times also very close together. We had a 12:26 time next time was 12:30. Had to wait for carts--NONE available.
Because of double booking, we started 45 minutes late and were forced to join with another two golfer. Play was painfully slow. We finished last two holes in the dark.
Great location & lay up!!!
Pleasantly surprised with course conditions as grapevine was downgrading it for previous management's big problems. Fairways/greens were greatly improved; fall leaves removal was also an improvement. Will play it again soon.
Pittsburgh National is getting back to being a top public course in the area.
For mid-October, the course is in great shape. Greens were rolling like it was mid-season. Pitt National said they've been putting money into the course and it's showing. The expansion of their greens, back to original size, is coming along nicely.
Beautiful, quiet, enjoyable golf course
I always look forward to playing at Pittsburgh National Golf Club. We played from the Black tees (Back tees - almost 7000 yards), and it was fantastic. It is a really nice course that has well-defined holes, trees, bunkers, water, and requires you to use all of the clubs in your bag. And the incredibly low price via GolfNow for 18 holes and a cart make it an easy decision for the value. You should definitely put this course on your personal rotation if it isn't on it already.......
Course is in excellent condition
I have played Pgh National (Deer Run) many times and I have to say that the course is in the best shape I have ever seen it. Some greens were a little firm, but all rolled very nicely. We played in just over 4 hours on a Saturday morning which is always an added bonus.
great day
course was in great shape, good day to shape shots. My son-in-law traveled from Franklin,Pa. 60 miles away to play this course so I was very pleased to present him with a superior layout.
Friendly staff, lightening fast and challenging greens, well maintained.
Great course. Friendly staff, lightening fast and challenging greens, well maintained.
This course was in fair condition, a bit dried out
There was miscommunication between GolfNow and the course. I made a tee time on GolfNow and received a call from the course that the tee time was not available. I picked another time from GolfNow and the course said it also was not available. Luckily they did have a tee time available that was only 50 minutes earlier than what I wanted. Better coordination between GolfNow and the partner golf courses is necessary.
The course is in much better condition
It has been a few years since I played Pittsburgh National so I was pleasantly surprised when the course was in much better condition. The pace of play was 3.5 hours so it was nice to experience that in the north hills. I would recommend those that haven't played Pittsburgh National/Deer Run in a while to pay a visit.
