Hard Rock Golf Club Riviera Maya
About
The Hard Rock Golf Club Riviera Maya (formerly known as The Golf Club at Playacar) offers the perfect combination of natural beauty and the work of man. This magnificient golf course, carved out of the dense Mayan Jungle is only a few hundred yards away from the crystal-clear, turquoise ocean and the fine white sands of the Mexican Caribbean Sea.
The intelligent architectural design of the golf course has converted Playa del Carmen into one of the most popular tourism destinations in all of Mexico.

It was close by me
Course has too many dog legs, balls are overly expensive, and the staff is pretty strict when it comes to renting clubs. When in Mexico tho…
It's.... ok
Like many reviews, it's a TIGHT course with TINY greens. For 30 bucks more should have played PGA though. Got to the course 45 min before my start and the range wasn't open, not ideal coming off a plane flight the night before. The starter decided to send 4 twosomes out instead of groups of 4, which actually slowed the round to a hault. Some tee boxes are really slopped but in great shape. The golf carts are antiques. The drinks cart makes frequent stops. The pro shop is tragic. Honestly if it's the ONLY place you can get on, I guess go ahead and play, but I'd try and play anywhere else before going here.
Too many doglegs
There are a few good holes but for the most part every tee shot is about the same distance. From the whites, around 220 yards plus or minus 10-15 yards, then it doglegs left or right. All the fairways are really narrow with around 40 yards from jungle on the left to jungle on the right. Greens are tiny as well. Bermuda grass with grain influencing most putts, chips and shots from off the fairway. Lots of bunkers throughout the course as well. There is a good chance you’ll have to hit many greenside and fairway sand shots.
Put your driver away and plan to hit a lot of straight shots and it is a getable course. But if you leave the fairway and end up in the trees the penalty strokes will add up quickly.
Course is ok and it is great that all the on course and on course food and beverage is included in the greens fee. Staff was wonderful as well.
Challenging and can easily become frustrating due to balls out of play and plenty of chucked shots around the greens.
Hard Rock
Challenging layout. It says all inclusive … even included food poisoning that cost me 2 1/2 days of my trip! Not likely to return.
Tough but a great course
I played here twice during my stay (across the street) at the Riu Palace. The nice thing if you stay at the Riu, you get different rates (I paid 151 for the round). When I walked in to book a t-time, I asked for the rate and they said 260. Even on golfnow I had rates for 151 so I told them and they immediately gave me the rate I was looking at online, not knowing that I would have gotten that rate anyhow since I stayed at the Riu.
The course is challenging for sure. I have 16 handicap and I managed to play in the mid 90s both times. If you hit left or right of the fairway, you most likely will not find your ball due to the vegetation. Very scenic, lots of iguanas and other animals. I would play here again, but maybe not if I would be charged 260 like other golfers that I played with.
Hard Rock Golf
Staff was very friendly and efficient at check in. Fee included a small breakfast bar and drinks as well as beer, soft drinks and mixed drinks as well as snacks and sandwiches. Course is in excellent condition and greens roll true. Pace of play was good. Finished in just over 4 hours. Would definitely play there agsin
Hard Rock
From arrival to finish everything was excellent. Only downfall was the driving range did not open until 7:30. Breakfast, and drinks including alcoholic beverages on the course were included. Course was in very good condition. Enjoyed the whole. Staff was friendly and attentive. Will return
Fantastic course! Tough but amazing!!
We had a great day at the Hard Rock Golf Course. Amazing facility, beautiful course, wildlife, outstanding service and a ton of fun. The all inclusive is fantastic.
If you hook or slice bring at least 24 balls lol.
Great greens
Got a good deal at 1-56pm tee time
We had to rent clubs but there were no balls provided
We were told the course closes at 5-30 giving us 3.5 hours to complete the round unfortunately the 4 ball in front was too slow and after 17th joke the course manager came to take us off the course
To say me and my son in law were unhappy is an understatement after paying close to $200 not to finish is very annoying
Neal Axonsmith
In “ok” condition
For the price, you’re better off trying other courses in the area. Drinks and snacks were included but we didn’t drink much. Greens were bumpy. Golf carts are in terrible condition. Tight fairways.
It’s in good condition but I’ve played better courses in Mexico.
Save Your Money and Play Somewhere Else!
During a recent vacation to Mexico we booked 3 rounds of golf around Cancun to experience different courses.
The Hard Rock was a total bust! I got a hot deal so we paid $190 per person the the Golf No hot deal instead of the standard $250 greens fee, It was still way to much money for what you get.
The starter was rude when we checked in. I realized he has a busy job but a simple buenos dias or welcome would have gone a long way.
The course was in awful shape. Tee boxes were torn up and uneven, Who wants to tee off with their feet below the ball? The fairways were not well maintained. Tons of divots go unrepaired. The greens also left much to be desired. In addition, the marshal asked us to pick up the pace twice but we couldn't because of the group in front of us. Annoying for sure.
Hard Rock is all inclusive i.e. beverages, snacks, food. When you ask for Gatorade it comes out of a less that sanitary jug. The sandwiches we were given on the course were horrible. Soggy white bread with one slice of cheese, one slice of ham, and a tiny bit of tomato and lettuce. Needless to say the critters got all of our sandwiches.
After your round you go to the restaurant for lunch. I had nachos which were ice cold and nasty. My friend had salad that was yucky.
The best part of the round was the other people we played with! They were lovely and we had a great time with them.
I think the Hard Rocks MO is to fill people up with as much cervesa as possible to detract from the less than stellar conditions of the course.
Not a fair course
Everything was amazing eith the free cart and great food however the course is not fair
The greens where not in great shape and do small making that part of the game difficult even for a scratch golfer as well if you hit it anywhere near the side of the rough on most holes the sides all roll into the rough so you lose all balls at all hole sides which is frustrating if if you hit any shot that is a little off the fairway
You never get a fair bounce
Unfair to average golfers
Tight fairways, lots of dog legs and almost impossible to find your balls in the rough (thick jungle).
