Vaaler Creek Golf Club
About
Conveniently located near downtown San Antonio not too far from Austin, Vaaler Creek Golf Club has a memorable layout of gently rolling hills dotted with creeks, ponds and lakes. The course begins with a challenging front nine and then eases up a bit on the back nine, but overall it is a formidable test. The greens are tricky and demanding, especially on the front nine where there are some severe slopes and undulations. The back nine greens are a bit flatter but they still require careful attention. The rolling, contoured fairways are lined with trees and there are deep bunkers strategically guarding the greens, but luckily there are only seventeen of them. Water hazards come into play throughout and there are also several doglegs and blind shots if there wasn’t enough to keep you on your toes.

Golfer Reviews
Awesome.
If your wondering whether you should make the trip to go visit Valeer.... take my advice and go! You will not regret taking a tee time at this hidden gem. I would make the 50 mile trip again and again if I could. Staff was amazing, course was in excellent shape with fluffy fairways and greens that rolled true. Bring an extra sleeve of balls and a camera.
Outstanding course conditions!
Vaaler Creek GC has been a little gem tucked away in the beautiful Texas hill country for awhile now, although I've only known of its existence for a few years now. Even in these hot, dry conditions the greens rolled true, and the fairways were pristine. The design was challenging; many approaches were to greatly elevated targets and some landing areas off the tee seemed dauntingly narrow. Overall, Vaaler Creek was a challenging track worth every dollar in the modest green fee. It is also conveniently close to the Real Ale Brewery tap room- minutes away.
Get the greens back
Good layout but plays tough because of fairway slopes and firmness. The greens were aerated 4 weeks ago and they are still miserable to play on. The biggest complaint is the speed difference between greens - some slow some fast. The back nine has a tendency to be much slower than the front, in general.
Great course, great value
One one my favorite courses close to San Antonio. Always in great condition, plenty of availability, and if you choose the right tee time, great value and not overcrowded.
Highly suggest this golf course!
Vaaler Creek was in really good shape. The course layout is a good challenge with numerous shots required of the golfer. We played the tips and really liked the challenge. This course has moved to the top of our list and we play many courses in the area. If your budget us less than $50 this is the course to play on a regular basis.
No Mention of Greens Maintenance
Tees and fairways were in excellent shape, but the greens had just been punched/top dressed. There was no mention of this when booking tee time through GolfNow. When we checked in the pro shop also did not mention the condition of the greens. Course layout is different in that holes are either straight of doglegs to the right. Challenging if you are fighting a hook off the tee. Greens all have some degree of slope to them. Hard to measure the greens due to the holes and sand covering the greens. Pace of play was mixed, front nine was very quick, while the back nine was fairly slow. Did not see a marshal to help with speed of play. I liked the course layout and challenges on each hole, but would really have liked to be notified of the green maintenance. Really distracting when you look up to the green and it looks like a rather large sandtrap instead of a green. I realize that green maintenance is necessary, just wished that they had publicized this before booking my tee time.
I'll be back
Very well maintained, scenic with nice layout. Enjoy playing this course whenever I can
A very pleasant experience
While a bit of a drive from San Antonio, if you make it you'll be greeted by a well-designed and maintained course at a good price and good pace of play. Since I played on a weekday, I cannot comment on pace on the weekends.
Pace of play , staff indifference , problems with carts outweighed the quality of the course
While the course itself was in great shape and challenging as a first time player it was confusing . The tee boxes were hard to figure, distance markers on the course we're hard to find. The high tec cart was sporadic in performance . The marshals are called " ambassadors "and we're nowhere to be found. At the turn 3 groups were waiting !! Obviously delusions of grandeur . Everyone hurried us along as a tourney was teeing off. The pins were all hidden and tucked because of this. Beautiful course understaffed , undertrained, and unnecessarily hard
Great Hill Country Course
Lay out is great. The conditions from the tee boxes to the fairways and green were excellent. Pace was a little slow. It was my first time playing here and the GPS in the cart was not working but we managed.
Course has a little bit of everthing to offer
Excellent shape, wide variety of holes (shot-making, bomb it, risk-reward), greens absolutely immaculate (hold and quick), GPS carts, friendly staff, nice practice area, great scenery, frequent beverage cart passes, and very reasonable pricing. What more could you want?
Only one slight gripe, no alcohol.
Excellent course
Beautiful hill country golf course! Excellent little hidden gem!
It is worth the drive
Drove up from north San Antonio I played on a Wednesday afternoon and it was not busy. The fairways and greens were overseed with rye. Great lies. Perfect greens, they could be faster. The only down side is the distance between holes and lack of signs. Interesting course with shot making holes. Paid 30.00. Worth 75.00
Vaaler is eexcelent
Course was in great shape. Good service, pace of play was great for Good Friday. Greens were true and good speed
True greens, windy
Windy conditions, cool temperatures and pin places made it significantly more challenging than previous outing. Greens were true, fairways in excellent condition and completed round in 4 hrs.
Driving time 90 minutes, car pooling makes it well worth the distance.
