Purgatory Golf Club
About
Spread across 218 acres, the Ron Kern-designed Purgatory Golf Club is the longest par-72 course east of the Mississippi River. Nevertheless, the course is set up to be enjoyed by all, with six different sets of tees ranging from more than 7,700 yards all the way down to just under 4,600 yards. Bunkering is one of the club's defining features, with more than 130 coming into play. Nowhere is this more apparent than on the par-3 17th, where eight massive bunkers almost completely surround the putting surface.

Par 3, 17th Hole Photo submitted by TravisCedzidlo19 on 10/09/2014
WOW!
My wife and I had a wonderful time here. The course was certainly challenging, but fun at the same time. In fact, my wife shot her best front nine score ever on any course! The only issue was that there was a group of six in front of us that we quickly caught up to and there was no course marshall to address the issue. We had to wait several minutes on every hole before we could tee off and they did not let us play through. They did go in at the turn so the pace of play was dramatically better after that. Very much hope that we are out that way again to play another round or two there. Also, everyone working there were absolutely wonderful.
Great Greens
The course was in great shape and the greens were exceptional.. thanks to the grounds crew & keep up the good work.
Was Happy with our choice
We were in the Indy Area for baseball and had one day to golf. We chose this course. We were very happy with our choice. The greens were great and the layout is fair but challenging. My only complaint is that the fairways were often too tight of a lie. In many places, being just off the fairway was more rewarded than being in the fairway. But overall, this was a good choice and we would play it again if given the chance.
Challenging
Course was in good shape tee through greens. Sand traps were inconsistent. Staff was great. Tap water at the turn at no charge a plus. Not many courses do that up North.
Must play
the course was in great shape. The greens were fast and there is no such thing as a straight putt. There was some difficulty with some of the holes let's face it a lot of that trouble was due to the person hitting the ball. This course is definitely a must play course if your in the area.
Great Course
Beautiful course. Challenging, but not not impossibly so. Every hole is well done. Only criticism I have is that many of the bunkers around the greens have shallow amounts of sand, which added strokes to my scorecard. Can’t go wrong playing this course.
Good value at $45
The course is still a good test of golf.
They are not keeping up the course as well as they used to. The cart paths look like they have been through a nuclear disaster. They have done some cart path maintenance with asphalt instead of concrete which will not hold up long.
The staff and facilities are still better than average but again need some work.
The course needs more water than they are giving it. I don't know if there are any government restrictions preventing this. The bunkers were pretty hard and could use more sand. The greens are not as fast as I have seen. To be fair, the heat may prevent them from speeding them up too much.
A good value at $45, not $75 or more.
I would recommend Rock Hollow over Purgatory at this point.
Better carts/gps
I think the course is set up very well . Unfortunately my complaint would be for the price You pay, the carts could be in better shape with GPS on them. Better marking on fairway with distance . Golf is a luxury and I love playing your course it’s just not what I expect when I spend money to play a top 10 course , I expect carts to have GPS and better markers on fairways. I will try to make it out but you will only get me one .

Very challenging course. Conditions were great!
Beautiful course with lots of challenges! My only suggestion would be to make sure you have your own range finder. Hopefully they will have GPS systems in their carts soon.
Expected More
Tee Boxes and Fairways were in fine shape. The greens were not in good shape at all. Several, meaning 15 of the 18 greens have poa annua and some type of fungus growing on them.
Putting was difficult to next to impossible. Wish they would have mentioned this in the pro shop before we played.
Layout is really fun and challenging, staff was courteous and friendly. However I won't be back util the greens have healed and roll better.
Thank you for playing we appreciate your business. We are sorry the greens did not meet your expectations. Right after we preformed a cultural practice of venting we received several heavy rain storms. The wet conditions along with extreme heat and high number of rounds stressed the greens. Now that they have dried out they have returned to our normal conditions. Hope you get back out to play soon.
