About
The Old Canal Course is one of three nine-hole courses at the Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club. Situated between the scenic Niagara Escarpment and the Bruce Trail, the Old Canal Course is named after the historic 120-year-old Welland Canal that borders it. The challenging layout was designed to championship standards, employing several tricky elements including carefully sculpted fairways, rolling greens, and king-size bunkers. True to its name, the golf course features plenty of water throughout. There are several dramatically placed tees perched on the edges of the canal, providing stunning scenery that is unmatched in the Niagara region. All three courses at Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club were built to the same high standards, but each one offers a unique set of challenges.

No Value here - Course conditions absolutely the worst
I was in a hurry to book at the last minute. Had not played here for years but was looking forward to the round. If I had read the last three reviews I certainly would have chosen one of the Niagara Parks courses instead. I agree with all their statements regarding the conditions of the course.
There has not been any upkeep from the tee boxes, to the bunkers and green with so many ball marks they are almost unplayable. Where are the maintenance staff as these conditions have existed for some time??
If you are a real golfer spend your money at another course.

Not bad for the price
I enjoyed my round. The courses have some great character! Really too bad that all the greens were streaked up because of improper sprayer application. I am a superintendent and it is sad to see that. I can understand on one green...but on all of them. Visually they look awful.

Going downhill fast
Played here for years, and it’s not what it used to be. Nice layout, some challenging holes, but it’s not being maintained (weeds in fairways and on greens, unplayable bunkers, terrible tee boxes). The Golf Now deal and the fact that no one was playing were the only positives. Too bad. Kaneff seems to be getting out of the golf business.

I have never commented about a course before.
I booked by phone about three weeks ago. We play a yearly foursome, mini- tournament here. The gentleman offered me a $45 league rate. Wonderful!
When I showed up Sunday, June 28th-2020, I had to pay $67, because the person booking had not entered the lower rate in the computer. As I did not remember the name of the person I spoke with, too bad; so sad!
The course had only white tee blocks and yellow???!
Two of us are senior golfers and the white tee blocks are too long and the yellow are too short,. Why advertise 5 sets of blocks if they are not available?
The bunkers are unplayable; water and concrete like sand. They hadn’t been raked in a long time.
The greens were generally slow but inconsistent.
This used to be a great course!

Course has been neglected, bunkers awful, greens in rough shape, carts worn etc.

WHAT A MESS
The owners of this course should both be embarrassed and apologetic for the condition of this golf course. Very poor maintenance all over the course from little or no sand in the bunkers to very slow, uncut greens and most of the holes on the greens look like they haven't been changed for several days.. WHAT A MESS !
For the same money you can play a course that earns the right for you to play it like Legends or Thundering waters or Whirlpool.
This course doesn't cut grass like it should or rake the bunkers or cut the greens. I don't recommend this course and save your money and time and go play a decent course

Nice course! Bunkers are in need of some serious work. Staff was very accommodating. Pretty fun layout, but the course needs some love.

I really enjoy this course, although I lost a fair amount of balls today...Bad bounces !! In really good condition...

greens a bit slower than usual but they were true and we had a grt time
Great course and staff
we played the iron bridge 9 and the escarpment 9. The iron bridge was beautiful and tricky. The escarpment was wide open and long! It was a great mix four out 18 for the day. Staff was very friendly, knowledgeable and professional. I would definitely recommend this to any golfer looking a for a bit of a challenge and wanting to test his/her long ball
Casual Day out
How is this course “royal”? Tees and bunkers were terrible greens ok. Bit expensive for a hackers course. Some holes are are really good challenge and the layout is quite good, it’s just not maintained very well. Fortunately we played with a nice couple of lads who were chatty and friendly. Otherwise I won’t rush back. It’s convenient for the mall though.
Laziness
I wish some of you lazy golfers would fix your dang ball mark's on the green, the greens would be in nicer shape if you did , it's like trying to get kids to clean ther room , really stop being lazy and help keep the course in good shape , iam sure the grounds crew would appreciate it .

basically we paid for 18 holes then we picked up an additional 9 at a fair price. so that tells you what we think of the course...and I'd do it again
Royal Niagara Golf Course Great Deal
The course was in good shape. Over the years they have allowed sand bunkers to become grass bunkers. Generally, the course was in great shape. Bunkers needed grooming however in fairness there had been a heavy rain the day before. Great value.
