Royal Niagara Golf Club - Old Canal Course
About
The Old Canal Course is one of three nine-hole courses at the Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club. Situated between the scenic Niagara Escarpment and the Bruce Trail, the Old Canal Course is named after the historic 120-year-old Welland Canal that borders it. The challenging layout was designed to championship standards, employing several tricky elements including carefully sculpted fairways, rolling greens, and king-size bunkers. True to its name, the golf course features plenty of water throughout. There are several dramatically placed tees perched on the edges of the canal, providing stunning scenery that is unmatched in the Niagara region. All three courses at Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club were built to the same high standards, but each one offers a unique set of challenges.

Great shape
Course was in great condition and they have made some good upgrades. Course is challenging but fair. Would recommend.
Kaneff Making Improvements to Royal Niagara
Played Escarpment and Canal. Escarpment which is my favourite of the 3 and Canal the least favourite. Sand bunkers vastly improved on Escarpment , whereas Canal still has the old, hard, waste sand bunkers, but hopefully they'll improve that this year. Both courses the greens were slow, and some tee boxes need weed control. However, overall glad they are heading in the right direction.
Great course
Had not played the course in at least 5 years, it is better than I expected and remember.
No too bad
Needs some more traps and a bit of work on the drainage. Greens were fantastic. The staff was really friendly. I look forward to playing this course as the maintenance improves..
GOING DOWNHILL FAST
I played all 3 nines with local members here for the second time this year as a visiting Kanaff member and encounted detoriating conditions due to lack of course maintenance. Course design is great, pace, staff proshop, are all very good. However, bunkers were flooded with more clay than sand, tee markers were mostly missing (fortunately the locals knew where to play from). Crabgrass was covering most white tee boxes. Uneven lies on tee boxes as a result of uneven seeding while trying to fix the crabgrass problems. Washrooms are in need of cleaning as wet floors and so much litter!
I understand that Covid may affect staffing, but this is difficult to accept.
Really used to be a great course, but current experiences are NOT TO BE RECOMMENDED!
Disappointed Again
This course's potential to be outstanding is very good, but we were disappointed again. About 5 years ago we played this course, expecting it to be in its previously excellent form. We were very disappointed because we loved the course when is was properly taken care of. So last week, after 5 years, we thought we play it hoping it would be as good as it was long ago. Unfortunately, were were disappointed again and I will not play it any more. The greens were in poor condition and very, very slow, the first cut off the fairway was US Open-like. A few of us even lost balls in this unusual long rough. The course needs a major uplift!
