Royal Niagara Golf Club - Old Canal Course
About
The Old Canal Course is one of three nine-hole courses at the Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club. Situated between the scenic Niagara Escarpment and the Bruce Trail, the Old Canal Course is named after the historic 120-year-old Welland Canal that borders it. The challenging layout was designed to championship standards, employing several tricky elements including carefully sculpted fairways, rolling greens, and king-size bunkers. True to its name, the golf course features plenty of water throughout. There are several dramatically placed tees perched on the edges of the canal, providing stunning scenery that is unmatched in the Niagara region. All three courses at Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club were built to the same high standards, but each one offers a unique set of challenges.

Ridiculous
We teed off at 6 am Sunday morning because we wanted a quick pace, we were the first players that day. After the first 9 we were told to play Escarpment for the back 9 unaware they were starting fresh golfers there. We got stuck behind 4
foursomes !!!! After playing the front 9 in 75 minutes it took us 55 minutes to play 3 holes. I called the pro shop and was told that we could have played another 9 where there wasnt anyone on it. Why we were not directed to play that 9 by the marshalls is beyond me. The pro shop said they were doing split tee times. We moved over to 9 and played it back to the clubhouse. We missed 4 holes . The staff need to be better trained. I am not happy about this. I have played the course many many times but will not go back.
Nice course, slow day!
Played on a Saturday for the first time in a long time, now I remember why. Especially around the Niagara area. Probably many boys weekends or wedding party groups. Had a group of 11 guys in front of us some barely hitting it 100 yards down the fairway, then waiting five minutes in the fairway for the green to clear 250 yards away. At one point, they re grouped themselves and we had a fivesome in front of us! Not a marshall to be seen. 5 I/2 hr. round!! The course itself was interesting and in good shape! challenging though.
I'd play again but never on a weekend again!
Thanks for the feedback. Yes on busy days you do get some different golfers. We will pass along to our golf pro.
Solid Course
Overall Good course, Pace of play was very slow on front 9 and all due to foursome in front playing very slow. Did not see a Marshall all day, other than that good experience. Greens were a little chewed up for so early in season, but some really cool views of Bridge and water on a few holes
We will check and see where the Marshall was. Thanks for the feedback!
Royal Niagara
For anyone planning on playing there this year they have gone cash less, they do not accept cash anymore.
Thanks for the rating. "Tap and Go" is our new motto.
Amazing Value
Cannot beat the price we paid for this round of golf. It was like we had the course to ourselves.
Highly reccommend
Thanks!
Just like Kanif
This course has all the potential to be great. Greens are bumpy which made it difficult. Open enough for those who have problems keeping it in the fare way. Course management a must . Will play it again . To bad they did not put some money into the greens.
Nice cool but windy spring day
Advised and arrived 20 mins late as a single.
The gentleman greeted me with no smile and put me with another single, which turned out to be a great companion local. But we were put in between some kind of league playing their regular.
There are 3 nines, don't understand why we had to play at the same nines.
I haven't played this for a couple of years coming from Toronto. The course is in pretty good condition.
Overall, other than the wind, it was fun.
Thanks. We will work on the smiles and be smarter about starting you!
Early and Late Season Favourite
We always play Royal Niagara early and late in the season because they open early and close late. Would probably play more but Im a member elsehwere. Gotta Love this course as its a regulation course who opens early and closes late in the year
Nice course - very windy
We played Iron Bridge course on Victoria Day long weekend. Took advance of the hot deal but did not account for the cold and windy day. The only issue we found was the Asian foursome ahead of us that choose to look for every ball they lost - very painful. We were surprised that there was no marshal manning the course. Anyway, we would return.
EXCELLENT COURSE
EXTREME WINDY DAY MADE IT VERY DIFFICULT BUT WE STILL ENJOYED IT..COURSE WAS IN GREAT CONDITION.
The wind always seems to create havoc at Royal Niagara!
Great day.
The staff were friendly the course was in great shape for the time of year. The only down side was the course doesn't except cash?????? Yes I said no cash which isn't a problem paying for a round of golf but it's a pain in the half way house. When you are trying to buy a pop and some chips and have to go through the debit machine. Despite that would certainly play there again.
Great conditions
The course is really nice right now even after all the rain we have had!
The course was in good condition considering a heavy rain the previous day
I plan to play the course again. Pace was great. Greens were excellent
Thanks. It has been a challenging spring!
Terrible greens!
They should be ashamed charging that kind of money for greens like that! 39 putts and only hit 1 bad putt!
We will immediately send to the Greenskeeper!
Glad we played it...
My fiancée and I were in Canada for my birthday and were able to get an early season round in. The course was lightly trafficked and we got around mostly unobstructed. We played the Escarpment/Iron Bridge combo and greatly enjoyed the layout. That said, the price ($52-Canadian) was pretty steep, especially considering the early season course conditions; and the fact that our cart crapped out after 15 holes. A phone call to the pro shop and the cart problem was quickly addressed by the staff (to their credit). All in all, we had a nice time and would like to return one day to play the Canal 9.
Happy be-lated birthday. Thanks for the feedback!
What a day....
The weather was excellent for November and the course was in great shape, given it was getting ready for winter. The greens were in very good shape and few leaves to distract you. Highly recommend playing this course any time.....will be back for sure.
Glad you enjoyed the round!
good
It need more guide to next hole.
We are working on signage for next year
Golfing in November in Canada
The weather was nice, windy and chilly at times but nice for November. The fairways were in very good shape, some of the low areas were wet but still well kept up. The greens were fast, well groomed and pretty much leaf free and they rolled true. There were only about 20 golfers spread out over the 27 hole course, so the pace was how we wanted it to be, no-one pushing or dragging. The staff was very pleasant and patient, the kitchen was open at 8 am for a breakfast sandwich which was very good and reasonably priced. Definitely a course to play and well worth the money. It has it's challenges for the experienced golfer but is also playable for those starting out playing the tougher course.
November golf! We love it. Thanks for the feedback.
The point is that yes the course was busy but the staff should have changed the route and sent us to Old Canal when they knew we played fast. It was ridiculous to get stuck behind 3 foursomes when a whole 9 holes were empty.
Thanks for your feedback. We will send this to our Golf Pro so the team can address this.
