Royal Niagara Golf Club - Old Canal Course
About
The Old Canal Course is one of three nine-hole courses at the Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club. Situated between the scenic Niagara Escarpment and the Bruce Trail, the Old Canal Course is named after the historic 120-year-old Welland Canal that borders it. The challenging layout was designed to championship standards, employing several tricky elements including carefully sculpted fairways, rolling greens, and king-size bunkers. True to its name, the golf course features plenty of water throughout. There are several dramatically placed tees perched on the edges of the canal, providing stunning scenery that is unmatched in the Niagara region. All three courses at Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club were built to the same high standards, but each one offers a unique set of challenges.

Niagara Gem
Great course, every hole has a different challenge.
Very well maintained, consistent greens and bunkers.
Best conditioned course I have played through this very dry summer.
Good value
It was a golf day for the boys, we booked two groups. The were probably the second or third flight in the morning. The staff was friendly but nothing special. There was no breakfast bar nor it was open. Starter was friendly and informative. Because of the warm hot weather lately its understandable that the course was a little bit brow. Tee box, fairways and greens were acceptable. The only draw backs was that, there are a lot of geese droppings on certain holes mainly the first, 17th and 18th hole. Total let down and unpleasant smell; not a pretty site. For a premium course they should do something about it. Aside from that its worth playing at discounted rate.
great day
will be back...was a fun challenge
50th birthday round
Course was in good shape. Had a problem taking care of the round for my buddy's 50tj birthday. The staff member who checked us in couldn't get the credit card machine to accept my Amex. I've never had my Amex been declined. He tried it three or four times but it didn't go through. I paid cash but it seemed to me the attendant didn't really care either way. The course was in good shape although the pin placements were set up very difficult. The greens were incisistent from hole to hole. Overall, it was a good day and I like the set up of the ciurse
not what it was
Played this course a few years ago and was impressed. It played long and the fairways and greens were in very good shape. This time the greens are in horrid repair and the fairways were hard and chewed up. Not worth the money charged now. There are a number of courses in Niagara that are a better value. A little TLC would go a long way here.
We will pass this feedback along to our Superintendent. Thanks for the honest feedback.
Course Conditions Disturbing
The mgmt team needs to re-evaluate the condition of this course. What was once a gleaming gem of the Niagara Region is now the ugly duckling. Every green is blasted with unfixed ball marks. Every pin location covered with spike marks. Every greenside bunker unkept. Most fairway bunkers not even in playable conditions.
Is this the course's fault, that golfers today don't respect the course? Not entirely. But if I was on the mgmt team, rather than having my volunteers sitting around the clubhouse, I'd have them circulating the course, looking for an un-raked bunker, and have them fix it. If they find a customer not respectful enough to rake a bunker, say something to that player.
The only reason I SETTLED on golfing here tonight, was that it was the only place I found that I could race to, after work, and still squeeze 18 holes in, before dark.
I won't be back, unless something drastic happens to the condition of this, once pristine, course.
Challenging Course
This is a fantastic course for anyone who loves a challenging day of golf. I am an 11 handicap and really had to ensure that I did course management to have a chance at par for most holes. You cannot just rip a driver and hope you hit the fairway. I highly recommend this course
course is not what it once was
No bag person at bag drop. Wouldn't let us take cart to load up into parking lot. No marshals anywhere had numerous groups jump in front of us on escarpment 9 which was our start to the second nine. Had to watch drunken golfers in front of us for over 3 hours. Garbage cans overflowing throughout the whole course. Nobody rakes the traps or repairs ballparks on the greens. Not what I expected from a course that once hosted a Telus skins game. Beverage cart girl said the course ran outve ice so she had to quit serving . Was quite a hot day without water.
Father's day
Overall, nice course. Glad I had a coupon. Pace was slow. Beverages very expensive. Very narrow but would play it again on a non holiday and maybe not on the weekend...
Thanks, good feedback on the pace of play and drink prices. We will send it to our team at Royal Ontario.
Royal Niagara Golf Course is a fun and enjoyable place to play golf
I have been playing Royal Niagara Golf Course since it has opened, and to my mind it is the best course among the Kaneff courses. It is forgivable, while also being challenging. The greens are fast, but not diabolical. I will continue to play Royal Niagara since it provides me with great value for the money paid.

First Time, Only Time
Upon arrival for Father's Day tradition of a round with my son we were met with an arrogant staff person and a rude cart boy. First we were lied to that carts cannot go onto the parking lot to get your clubs loaded. There were many there when people ended their rounds. Then we were told we could not take a cart to the range or the putting green. After 9 knee operations limiting my walking is the only way I can play. Then, the best one was the girl in the snack shop told us it was illegal to sell us a bag of ice. It was going to be 33 degrees and we wanted to keep the water that we purchased there cold. Then we get to the first tee and we were backed up a full group. The course was average at best (IronBridge/Escarpment), the greens were good. The ONLY saving grace was Mark in the bar afterwards who knew customer service as he was attentive and polite. After our round there he stuck out like a clothed person at a nudist beach. There are many places to play in Ontario and this is one I will choose to never play again. Very disappointing.
Definitely not the best experience! We will send your feedback over to Scott our pro and operations manager.
Challenging and engaging
This is a course where you need all the clubs in your bag. Good variety of holes and challenging greens. The 2nd 9 I played - Canal - had too many forced carries for my liking. For someone playing for the first time, hole #9 on this 9 was confusing. Overall, a great challenge, a great afternoon and lots of fun!
Just OK for Kaneff Course
Have played other Kaneff courses, so was expecting more considering the apparent premium pricing. While the layout, challenge , and greens were fine, thought the condition of many fringe areas, especially the border areas were overgrown and out of control. Miss anywhere and say goodbye to your ball. Greens rolled OK but seemed bumpy. Will not likely return.
Nice place to play
Course conditions were quite excellent, they have improved dramatically since last year.
I always find the layout interesting.
All the staff were friendly and helpful.
The course was very enjoyable.
Negative note: range balls not provided.
Thanks!
Worth the money
Great course and in great shape great pro shop and the staff are super good I really enjoyed my round of golf and will be back foresure
Thanks. I will let Scott our new pro know about your experience.
Underated course
Was very windy on this day, but the course was in good condition & the staff very friendly & accommodating. The layout is quite good & there are challenges to be met. There is just something here that's preventing this from being a really good golf course & I just can't say what that might be after having played here a number of times. Will play here again.
Challenging Course
Challenging layout but if you play the Old Canal nine, forget about the 7th green......totally covered in goose droppings. Disgusting.
Thanks for the feedback. I will let our Greenskeeper know about the tee deck.
Pretty Course
Many interesting and challenging holes. Pretty scenery.
Thank you!
Ok for the $
Greens slow, traps terrible but ok for the $.
Could be a good to great little course if they spent some $.
Good course at a good price
We got a good deal $40 (plus tax and fee) for a Wed golf day. There were not many people there so we zipped around in 4 hours.
Course is in good condition.
It's a little tricky when the wind picks up.
Really great review, the detail will help us get better.
