Royal Niagara Golf Club - Old Canal Course
About
The Old Canal Course is one of three nine-hole courses at the Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club. Situated between the scenic Niagara Escarpment and the Bruce Trail, the Old Canal Course is named after the historic 120-year-old Welland Canal that borders it. The challenging layout was designed to championship standards, employing several tricky elements including carefully sculpted fairways, rolling greens, and king-size bunkers. True to its name, the golf course features plenty of water throughout. There are several dramatically placed tees perched on the edges of the canal, providing stunning scenery that is unmatched in the Niagara region. All three courses at Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club were built to the same high standards, but each one offers a unique set of challenges.

Poor Quality Course
I expected far more from a course that has green fees as high as $70 and more. The greens were terrible; divot marks everywhere, no ability to make proper reads and some of the greens had weeds in them. The rough was inconsistent and burnt, it seem to have been cut with a lazy attitude and grass clipping were just left to build up. The worst was a par 5 on the escarpment that I should have been on in 2 had it not been for the last 40 yards not been cut, no fringe available and my ball was caught up on what should have been the fringe but it was about 3 inches thick of uncut grass. I heard from many people I the Niagara area that it is a poor course, but I have it a chance given the golf now price but I will never be back again.
Lovely day in the neighbourhood
A lovely day indeed. Very nice course with some interesting holes. Challenging enough for me and most golfers with a 15 plus handicap. Lower, just move back on the tees. Rain a few days earlier meant the Bunkers were not in good shape. Hard. too hard ... need sand. Water in the traps happens but they are still too hard. I liked the course very much ... greens were good .. tough to read ... decent condition.
Great facility
Great course....good value.
Greens were rough. Due to golfers NOT repairing ball marks. Inexcusable.
Food -restaurant closed too early....5 pm. Nothing to be had at the turn...
Facility locked its doors too early....luckily an employee saw us and let us in to use the restroom.
Beautiful Fairways
Course is in great condition as always with soft clean fairways and really decent greens. Only one green, I believe it was the 6th on Escarpment, had some kind of blight along the right edge with no grass. Butoverall great greens with pretty challenging hole positions.
Great except greens
Facilities are great and the staff were extremely friendly. Course looks great overall, well watered and everything was very green.
Pace of play was bad. Stuck behind a group with space ahead. Apparently they were having cart trouble which was eventually fixed but only saw the marshal once about it.
Only other issue were the greens, tho well watered and rolled nicely, were so dug up with ball marks, areas with dirt. When you got a smooth area they rolled true but that was rare. Really only knock because fairways were in great shape, tee boxes looked great and overall presentation of course was great.
Gave it an overall 5/5 for potential which honestly may be a little wrong of me. Based on the rest of the course being top notch I can forgive them slightly for having green issues. The really need to move pin placement.
Greens have many teers, lots of deep bunkers placed throughout fairways and around greens. Difficult course and it can play long with raised greens. Feel like it played more difficult because the greens were chewed up tho.
Rude staff
Played this course for the second time in a few weeks. Like our last outing the cart died in the back nine. It died on the 10th hole and the beer cart girl radioed in. The staff member didn't know we were with the cart girl and very rudely told her to tell us in a nice way that we should have switched carts at the turn. Our cart died on the 10th, not at the turn. The staff member that brought us a new cart would not even respond to our questions. Never again. This course wanted to be prestigious but we now know why it will never be. We will not be back.
Great outing
Weather was suspect so the traffic was light and we (3) got off 30 minutes early. Played the round in about 3.5 hours.
Course was in excellent condition and we will be back.
Drop your clubs at the drop.. Will not let you take your cart to the parking lot.
Green to Tee is a journey on some holes, take a cart.
great all around challange
A pleasure to play any time, accuracy is a must or bring lots of extra golf balls
Hungry
There is no restaurant to talk about nothing to eat at all besides sandwiches not satisfactory
Perfect day of golf
Course was in great condition. Pace of play for the front nine was a nice flow, pace did slow down on the second nine. Completed round 4Hrs and 15 Mins.
Will return for second round before end of season.
Disapointed this time
Having played here on several occasions I was very disappointed with the condition of the greens and sand traps .
This course can be quite penal to misplaced shots but the poor quality of the traps and the poor putting surface this time made it very difficult to score well.
We notice that some of the pin positions where crowned suggesting that the green staff had not used a plate when cutting the hole..
While the bang for the buck is still quite good the course needs some TLC..
Not impressed
The carts are very slow- many people had them die on them. Ours did and it took them a half hour and two phone calls to get another one. Also got a hot dog in the club house and it was grey looking and not even hot. Yardage markers were missing on most holes. Couldnt even get a free beer for having to wait so long for a cart! Too much money for what you get!
a shot makers course
This course requires a lot of attention in not only the placement of your drives but your approaches as well. If you hit it off line here there's the potential for a lot of big numbers. The fairways and tee-offs were nice but the greens were just a tad slow. The winds were up this day as well, gusting to 35km which added to the challenge on top of the fact that it was "cart path only".
All in all though, it was a fun day.
Fun course
Fun challenging course to play. A course that needs to be played to know the best way to play the course.
Carts of terror!!
Great course, however found myself pushing my cart back to the club house after the 16th hole..the carts do not last a full 18 holes.
First Time Experience
Course was in excellent shape except for the bunkers which was water filled due to rain the day before. The marshall were friendly and cordial. Looking forward to a repeat game.
Course need maintenance
Tired of going to courses that don't spend any time fixing ball marks on their greens. We were one of the first groups out in the morning and I fixed 3-6 ball marks on most all greens while waiting my turn. Sand was also heavy yet there was no rain for days. I'm likely done with this course as there are many more in the area in the same condition for less money.
Great Value
Play the course before 8am and it is often all yours. We played as a 2 and never caught anyone and no one was pushing us. The course was in great condition. A couple of patchy spots on some greens but not really a concern. We will go back.
Good value but....
Me and my partner opted to take our clubs from the car instead of the bag drop.No volunteers to take our bag and put them on right cart.Paid our fee then nice chat with the pro shop mgr as I used to work there.Anyway the course is in very good shape although no one fixes there pitch marks on the greens very annoying.Bunkers well that is another story alltogether, they are just not playable no sand to speak of just wet mud or concrete clay.Could be a top course if money was spent on these bunkers Overall a good day golfing and would go back a real good challenge.
Fun to Play
The course is somewhat similar to Bear Creek in Barrie On with 27 holes, 3, 9 hole features.
We played Iron Gate and the Escarpment. The Ecarpment was very enjoyable.
Unfortunately it rained the day prior so we book a tee off at 412 to avoid a wet course, that did not pan out for us.
The course was wet and we were instructed to stay on the cart path for all holes, this made for a long day.
Otherwise pretty good value for the money, challenging but forgiving for the intermediate player.
i also find this course to be way over rated . There are plenty of other courses that charge less the halve on a hot deal and are far superior
