Royal Niagara Golf Club - Old Canal Course
About
The Old Canal Course is one of three nine-hole courses at the Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club. Situated between the scenic Niagara Escarpment and the Bruce Trail, the Old Canal Course is named after the historic 120-year-old Welland Canal that borders it. The challenging layout was designed to championship standards, employing several tricky elements including carefully sculpted fairways, rolling greens, and king-size bunkers. True to its name, the golf course features plenty of water throughout. There are several dramatically placed tees perched on the edges of the canal, providing stunning scenery that is unmatched in the Niagara region. All three courses at Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club were built to the same high standards, but each one offers a unique set of challenges.

Royal Niagara
Tough but fair, very enjoyable. Greens were under repair but still very playable.
Poor Conditions
Greens very poor conditions, showered with ball marks. Most Sand Traps in very poor condition. Tee blocks seemed to be in same loacation for quite a while very rough. Pro shop staff not to concerned with our comments on the condition of course, more concerned with the amout we paid for green fees. Will not play or recommend any of my friends to play this course.
pro shop attendant treat golf now customer as very cheap
It was thankgiving holiday raining from a morning. .we think there were traffic on the hey so left toronto early .we arrive there 2hr early our tee time.it was rainning and windy .golf course was empty..we went check in pro shop..ask since golf course is empty if any chance to go early..he told us you are golf now customer and paid cheap money and treat very cheap people..there were reason we ask for go out early that golf course is empty..playing a 18 holes was terrible experience because everywhere smells like garbage dump eventhough weather turn to nice..
Extremely Difficult Set-Up
Play this course about half a dozen times this year.
I would consider this course to be the most difficult course in the Niagara area as it stresses your approach shots, short game and putting.
Tee shots are fairly challenging but do calculate the wind and natural wetlands.
The greens are small and elevated with multiple levels tiers that would only be receptive to shots intentionally hit within 5 yards if you were to score well.
The greens are fast paced however are patchy and contained many pitch marks in most areas.
For some reason, the green keepers tend to be rude & aggressive.
The course marshalls are more interested in finding balls than serving the customers so if you do have concerns with respects to etiquette, I would recommend you to be firm and assertive.
Case in point, we had to diffuse an experience with irate drunks on the course as they were hesitant to let us play thru.
Good for late September
Course was in good shape for late September except for the greens.
It seemed more player damage - dragging feet and not fixing ball marks.
Well Kept just enough challenge.
Front Nine Escarpment very well played, long par 4's and wide fairways. Moved along well between holes.
Back nine Old Canal course, they put people out before we crossed over playing became very slow.
This nine was very challeging, needing pinpoint ball placements and narrow fairways.
Overall a little frustrated in that it took over 5 hours to play, a lot of waiting.
Royal Niagara
Course was excellent overall. Disappointed there is no dining room except for a snack bar. Given the price you pay for green fees there should be a nice dining area. 18th hole on the Canal course is very disappointing. Can't understand why you would have a finishing hole that was so poorly designed.
Vastly improved conditions
Many times I have passed this course to drive farther to another course. All because this course has historically had average service, and shaggy greens.
Looks like they got the message.
This time out, while service still average, got a great deal on GN... Was impressed with the course conditions, greens had roll, well maintained bunkers, played in 3.5 hours.
Windy Experience
Most of the holes set up east/west and that day there was a strong wind directly out of the west. With the openness of the course, this made for a challenging test. Fairways, bunkers, rough all in great shape. Most greens difficult to putt the because of all the spike marks. Definitely will come back again when wind conditions are not so severe. I had a tuna sandwich at the turn; I've had better. It was dry & tasteless.
A good test of golf
After heavy rains course was still very playable. Club selection off the tee is key, lots of elevated greens to factor in, and once you get on, the sloping greens really make you think! Super friendly starter, and great value. Will definitely go back!
Great Course
You will love the challenge, layout and condition of this course. Great course to enjoy and worth the drive.
very challenging
Great course. I'm not a low handicapper so I found it very tough, but fair. A lot of strategically placed creeks and bunkers penalize you when you try to be aggressive but don't hit the perfect shot. Greens could have been better cared for, but they were fast with lots of breaks. Great deal on golfnow.
Poorly maintained greens
On any course the standard of the greens are what normally brings you back.however The greens were very poor, this was a combination of lack of Tlc by green staff combined with poor course eticate with the groups in front of us failing to repair pitch marks on the greens, thus causing the ball to change the direction of travel severlry on numerous occasions. So because of this unfortunately won't be back
I love playing this course
The course has 27 holes witch are very challenging ,some of the greens are pretty challenging.
Great course
This course offers 3 different 9 hole courses. We played old canal and iron bridge. Royal Niagara is well maintained and very scenic. Don't let the nice scenery distract you because it's definitely a challenging course. Considering the downpour of rain that happened the night before the course was rather wet but drains well and was playable. I will be playing this course again.
Great play on a dry day :)
Hard to fully rate this course as it rained horribly the night before and flooded much of the course and all the sand traps were full of water. However, on the whole it was a fun course to play.
Great value
Played early bird through golf now. Flew through the course. Great conditions and scenery, good challenge for every level of golfer with 5 tee sets. Lots of space between holes, too much to make it walkable, it's only downfall because I enjoy walking when I play but carts are mandatory at Royal.
Royal Niagra
played 2 different courses 9 holes each. Not sure if they had 18 holes on each but was not busy considering it was a Sunday morning.
Really Nice Course!!
We were shopping in the Outlet Mall and went afterwards for a round of golf. it is directly on the other side. Really nice location, friendly staff, friendly people playing there. My wife and me, both beginners, needed a little extra time. The fairways and greens were in a great condition. Love to play here again!
