Great Golf Course, Even Better Value
There are plenty of first-class courses in New England that will cost you a pretty penny and countless cheap courses that are nothing to write home about. Canterbury Woods is a rare combination of a fantastic course that charges a fraction of what they could.
I paid $35 for my Sunday afternoon (pre twilight rate) at a course that is similar in condition and overall quality as those (like Owl’s Nest up the road) charging more than twice as much. Of the 80+ courses I’ve played, only Colonial Heritage in my home state of Virginia offers as good a value.
The conditions of the course are top rate with smooth, even fairways, rough, greens, tee boxes, and bunkers in superb shape. No burnt out areas or soggy spots, the greens roll fast and true, and the bunkers are fairly easy to hit out of.
The staff is exceedingly friendly though having a refreshment cart out on the course seemed like a no-brainer but the lack of one was made up for by the good deal on beer at the clubhouse.
The quality of the course aside, what most golfers will talk about at Canterbury Woods is the difficulty. The layout is extremely hilly, with not a lot of flat lies in the fairways and even fewer flat holes in general. Downhill par 3s, uphill par 4s, over-hill par 5, this course has elevation changes in spades, so make sure you bring the slope setting on your range finder. The course does offer free yardage books so if you haven’t played there before I recommend taking advantage of them.
If you’ve only got time to play one course in New Hampshire and have less than $50 to spend, this is your place!
First but not the last
First time to play this course and it was great. Pace of play was slow as the four players in front of us were constantly in the woods. The course if very hilly but not impossible. Would definitely go back there.
Washed out bunkers
Played here Sunday 8/6/17. Every single bunker was washed out from what must have been very heavy rain and they were basically unplayable. No attempt at repairs were made and no discount for course conditions was offered - very disappointing. Greens were a little bumpy - maybe recently aerated and not fully healed yet. Normally a great course and in good condition, but this particular day was very disappointing.
Very friendly staff
We were greeted by an extremely friendly lady, Sandy. Checked us in, sold us a token for the driving range and said the course was a little ahead of schedule so to check back with her when we were done. They were more than accommodating to us. Golf course was in OK condition, the greens were a bit beat up, but our tee time was later in the day, the sand traps and some of the the cart paths were washed away due to the horrific storms that came through in the past 2 days, otherwise great course and exceptional staff.
Canterbury Woods
The course was and is in excellent shape.I have no major complaints except for the amenities after the round.Lounge was closed when we finished.
Perfect for shorter hitters and ladies.
Very nice course. it is a great example of a mountain course.
Excellent
New to golf. Beautiful course. Unbeatable price. The less I pay the more I play. Thanks.
aerated greens
I realized that the price was unusually low - but somehow it should be posted before booking.
Enjoyable Round of Golf
I get to play Canterbury a couple of times per year and always enjoy it. It has an excellent layout, a lot of different elevation changes and lies to keep things interesting. The conditions are consistently really good and it is relatively inexpensive. My only criticism is the speed of play, though not terrible, could be improved on. Nice course at a great value!
Fun course to play!
This is a fun and challenging course. Conditions for early season were really good! Had a lot of fun getting the first round of the year under my belt. You can't beat the hot deal value at this course!
Nice course,friendly staff
Course played well for early spring conditions. Fairways and greens in great shape for time of year. The weather was cool and windy and course played tough to those conditions. Had to use whatever skills you have to get around and score well.
Awesome time
This course has always been a favorite of mine. It's a must play if you are anywhere even close. Lot's of elevation change, great views, perfect greens. I got out late afternoon and was able to finish 18 in 3 hours, with a couple friendly people allowing me to pass as a single in a cart. Can't wait to come back when the trees are full and the course is in peak condition
