Greens are stiff
Course is in great shape greens are hard but fast hard to hold from outside 150 yds
First Time, won't be the Last Time!
I've been tempted to play this course now for the last 2 yrs, living in the Lakes Region of NH, I always played courses near me. Had business in Portsmouth, NH and decided to book a tee time at Breakfast Hill. The course is in very good condition and only getting better when the summer weather kicks in. If you're at the NH coast, it's a MUST PLAY. Enjoy.
Breakfast HillGolf
This course is always in great shape. Pace of play is always top notch. The ranger came by at least 5 times to ensure this. I play 130 rounds a year and have high expectations. I would recommend this course to everyone.
Very nice course, with challenges
First, I wish GolfNow listed "no denim" where appropriate. I was wearing blue jeans, and the Ranger told me about it (but let me play).
The course is well laid out, scenic, and flows well. Some fairways are not as wide as I needed them to be but that's always the case.
This course has huge boulders in the ground frequently, and those are to be avoided. The ricochet can be huge.
great challenging course
I played on a brisk spring day. We had a great deal from Golf Now. The course was in good shape, although the pace of play was a bit slow, it was a really enjoyable round.
Greens rolled smoothly, fairways in good condition, tee boxes could have been groomed a little better.
This course can be a challenge for any style of player.
A nice afternoon walking or riding.
Course was in good condition for the beginning of the season. This course will have outstanding conditions in a couple more weeks. Great course to spend a few hours playing golf. Staff is extremely helpful and friendly.
Nice course, friendly staff.... what's not to love?
I couldn't pass up $30 for 18 with a cart, though I almost always walk when that option is available. In my opinion the course is definitely walkable for anyone in okay physical condition. No crazy hills or treks to contend with.
Attractive, varied layout, in good condition. This was my second visit and I've found the staff to be very friendly and helpful on both visits.
On a personal note, I shot my very first eagle in 25 years of playing on the 9th hole yesterday, and didn't know it until I went up to the green and wondered where the heck my ball went (couldn't see the cup from where I hit my second shot). Happy dance time!!!!
Great Track!
First I'd like to say the staff was very friendly before the round and even greated us after to ask us if we enjoyed the round. Course was in great condition…beautiful layout…beautiful scenic views. Great course will be back!
Nice New England course
Course is carved out of the woods and rock. No man-made hazards necessary. Mother nature provides plenty of them. Relatively short course, but slope rating is the clue that there are challenges on many holes. Greens are not fast, but OK. Staff is super, so go and enjoy!
9 holes at Breakfast Hill
My gf and I only had time for 9 on a Monday morning but was disappointed we couldn't play 18!! Course is very tree lined with tall pines. A short course but plays tough due to tight fairways. Tee boxes, greens and fairways all in good shape. Cart paths are not paved with rocky path. We walked and all holes are close together and easy to find. #8 is signature hole a uphill short par 4 that once you drive to top of hill the green is below fairway to left over a creek. Very picturesque!! Just a fantastic New England track!! Clubhouse has a patio area with couches , easy chairs and a outdoor bar. Will definitely be back to do 18!!
This course has great features
the cart paths are dusty and bumpy but the course terrain was up lifting, elevation changes, water hazards and woodsy side lines (old school style) My wife and I had a wonderful day of golf.
Manageable first time
Straight forward design, no hidden shots. Fairways, greens and traps are well maintained. Some treelined narrow spots add to the difficulty but you won't hear "fore!" all day. Professional staff. Gladly replay it.
4 Stars here means Really Good!
It's always a challenge to play a course for the first time, but Breakfast Hill was both fairly straightforward and fairly interesting (the back nine maybe more so than the front). We especially enjoyed the benefit of being paired with a member who willingly offered us very helpful playing tips...
The course isn't long, but it pays to be accurate off the tee. The fairways are a bit tight but the woods are forgiving - tree lines are staked more as lateral hazards than out of bounds. The holes are close together, which makes for an easy walk, but you don't feel like they are on top of each other. "Fore" is not a word I would expect to hear often here.
The course was in great condition with very receptive greens that were quick without being too fast and true if you played less break - a tip from our playing partner...
All in all, the course was good fun! I'm certain we'll play it again.
Nice course, uninformed staff
Got a great price on a tee time. Very nice and fun course but I probably won't play here again due solely to their clubhouse staff. I arrived for my tee time and they insisted it was too late to play 18 holes even though I had booked 18 holes on golfnow. I attempted to book another round recently and got the same story. Both times the staff talked down to me as if I were an idiot. Please get in sync with what is posted on the internet. Oh, and why post an 18 hole twilight rate after 5 (on YOUR website) if, according to the clubhouse staff, it doesn't exist. Maybe the staff needs to freshen up on what's posted by their partner, golfnow, and their own website!
Course in excellent condition
The course in great shape. Played 2 days in a row. Paired up with members both days and very enjoyable. Mostly walkers. Played under 4 hours both days. Not a lot danger ie water and bunkers but if off fairways usually hazards. Fun round.
Mixed feelings
Random thoughts:
- This is a course for the locals.
- Lots of walkers, so if you plan on riding, you will most likely still get paired with someone walking.
- A few tight fairways, overall nice course.
Unfortunately I was paired up with a couple riding, and a guy walking that both decided to only play 9 holes. So on my back 9, I was stuck between a foursome ahead and a foursome behind me. Both group had some riding, some walking. And there were groups ahead of them. So really I had nowhere to go. Sadly neither grouped preferred I join with them making a 5 some. So I was on the the group ahead of me and the group behind me was on me. I oddly did not not understand why they did not want me to join? I guess teeing off 5 and putting out 5 is annoying I suppose, and it was only for 9 holes.
Can't Pick Your Partner
Booked a great time at a great rate at a course recommended by a friend back home. I was away at a family vacation in Maine and this course was a half hour away.
I was paired with three gents who play golf twice a year. I am a bogey golfer (handicap of 19) and the round took a little longer than 5 hours. Two groups had to play through our group. My 'partners' took penalty shots with great frequency.
The course is challenging with tight fairways for those not driving the ball relatively straight. The greens were not complicated. The course was well groomed. A refreshment cart was on the course and drinking water and bathrooms were well placed.
I would like to play this course again.
Nice course. Watch out for granite!
As my parents just moved up to Portsmouth for retirement I decided it would be a good idea to start scoping out golf courses in the area for future visits so that eventually I can have a couple go-to courses when visiting. The first on the list was Breakfast Hill. It was only ~15 minutes from their new house and had solid reviews from across the web. All of the reviews were pretty much spot on.
While I was a bit skeptical about the course based on its lack of length (only ~6500 yards from the back tees) it certainly makes up for it in interesting/precise holes. I didn't end up playing the back tees like I had planned since the threesome that I was paired with teed off before I reached the 1st tee and I didn't want to be the guy playing from a different set of tees. That said, we played from the Black tees which are a shade under 6,000 yards. For a person that drives the ball 250-270 this was probably going to be a day to keep the driver in the bag most holes. However, I ended up using the driver more than I probably should have. Some par 4s I ended up hitting driver->wedge. I can't necessarily recommend this strategy, as overpowering this course is tough because of some severe slopes and narrow fairways. If you don't know where you're going there are even a few blind shots.
As for course conditions, it was in very good shape considering the time of year and the fact the course had just hosted a 2-day tournament the couple days beforehand. The greens were being top-dressed/sanded as play was happening (went off at 7:15am), so I didn't get to experience what the greens were normally like and after every putt the ball had a ton of sand on it since the grass was still dewey. This also hurt the ability to putt since you had to compensate for the ball slowing down once it had a ton of sand plastered to it. There was also a fair amount of ground under repair in the fairways, but not so much that it adversely affected play. Overall, the course was in very good shape.
The layout is very interesting for a such a short course. Many of the holes have interesting elevation changes and you have to play away from large natural rock (granite) formations. The architect could have easily blasted those away, but it's far more interesting seeing them as part of the natural landscape. In order to score well, you have to hit the ball relatively straight as there are many holes that are unforgiving more than 10-15 yards off the fairway. Additionally, this course is wonderful for having no houses anywhere near the course save for a couple holes where they're unnoticeable. The course is also pretty well wooded and many holes feel like their own habitat since you can't see other holes from the fairway.
I decided to walk the course since it was so short on the scorecard and was a beautiful morning. For being such a short course the walk was not what I'd call easy. All the cart paths are gravel and the distances from the green on the hole you just finished to the next tee box is sometimes at least a couple hundred yards. This would lead me to believe this may not have been high on the consideration list with the course routing. This walking dilemma also caused the round to play slower than if I'd had a cart. Our group was given a warning by a marshal for slow play on the 16th hole (really?) when we let the speedy member threesome in carts behind us on the front 9 play through at the turn and we basically never saw them after the 11th hole.
Overall, a great little course that I look forward to getting to know better on my future trips back up to NH.
Great course
Very well maintained, fast green, friendly staff.
It was a hot day drink cart on the course was readily available.
Very dissapointed
Due to a family emergency , I was unable to play .So I had my spot filled by a friend. Without knowing the price that I locked in from Golf now , my friends were charged full rate of 52.00 for greens fess and additional 18.00 for cart fees. I have there CC receipts to back this up. I hope and expect that Golf now or Breakfast Hill will make this right for me .
Thank You , Sean Lang
