South Padre Island Golf Club - 18 Holes Course
About
This southernmost course in Texas, despite its name, is actually situated on the mainland in Port Isabel. Architects Chris Cole and Stephen Caplinger carved an outstanding layout out of the wild native Gulf coast vegetation, with several holes bordering the Laguna Madre. The club has hosted the Texas Senior Open and the South Texas PGA Southern Championship since its opening in 1997.
The design features wide fairways bordered by native yucca, mesquite, and cactus, and the windy conditions often make it challenging to keep it in the fairway. Errant shots will be lost for sure. Others that fail to find the fairway will bury in waste areas and deep rough.
For the most part, the longer holes seem to play more downwind, while the shorter ones play into the wind. The large greens are of championship quality. Three of them are multi-tiered.
No. 5 is the feature hole, a picturesque, 335-yard, par 4 with a tee shot that must carry the Laguna Madre into a sharp dogleg-right fairway. On the back, No. 11 is unique because of the giant mesquite tree that dominates the middle of the fairway. Hole 12 can be interesting: it's a short par 3 that is completely surrounded by water.
The facility has plans for slow expansion based on how quickly the residential lots are developed. A second 18-hole course is under construction, with three holes complete. Designed by Chris Cole and Jeff Potts, this layout will feature only par 3 and par 4 holes and play to 5,400 yards.
Getting there : The club is on Hwy 100 before you cross over the causeway onto the island of South Padre. Turn right on FM 520 and continue for 2.5 miles to the course.

Gr8 course
Highly recommend this golf course. Fairways are good, greens are in gr8 shape, bunkers actually have sand in them.
Course in great shape
It's been over a year since I last played here. The course is in great condition. Excellent greens
Fun course but challenging too
We really enjoyed the course. It had some fairly easy holes but also had some interesting ones with water and sand. A few of the sand traps didn't have sand in them which was a minus but overall a fun experience.
Scenic links course with lots of variety
we got a great deal on golfnow and I guess opening day of snapper season kept some locals off the course, because it was quiet out there. Hardly saw any other golfers on a Monday afternoon. Te gentleman in the pro shop was super nice, and we were very pleased with the quality of the course/value.
Windy Day but excellent front 9
I had last played this course 2 years ago and it was in terrible shape. I am happy to report that it is under new management and looking much, much better - well, at least the front 9 is as we did not have time to play the back. The greens were excellent and fairways were very good.
It's a fun layout and if you're a golfer you need to check it out when staying at the beach.
SPI course review - 2015
this was in very bad condition. almost no grass anywhere including the greens. I did like the layout of the course. if they get their grass back it should be a good course.
south padre g c
All in all a good experience. Ample room on the fair and the greens were consistent. The staff was kind and courteous and helpful. Beautiful scenery although a little windy. I thought the fairways were a bit too short and forced some fat and thin shots. The fairways were soft enough for the club to get through the ball.
OK
Not a very good day, heavy winds and cool. Will try again when the weather is better.
average condition
Some bunkers han no sand. Numerous areas on fairways had no grass.. Greens needed be over seeded.
Best day in SPI
The course is more challenging for Men (playing from Blue) than for women. Rental clubs were Nike and in good condition.
An enjoyable day...
I/ve played the course many times before....it's the top public course in the Rio Grnade Valley. It's the first time I've played it using a golfnow.com tee time...it went well...
OK,but....
Wouldn't want to pay full price to play this course, although it is in better shape than it was last year.
Wonderful experience
Staff is wonderful, course was great. Highly recommended. You slice the ball and this is NOT the course for you.
Gone Downhill
This course used to be one of the best in the Rio Grande Valley - it was very much of a disappointment to play there. Greens, fairways, and course maintenance in general were poor.
the layout is great, eespecially the view.
My golf buddy and I always enjoy play this beautiful course. Its so well maintained and challenging holes. the greens were slower than usual made a lot of 3 putts. The mosquitoes were bad, due to , all the recent rains. I can't wait for my two brothers to coming down and play this course.
Mosquito paradie still fun to play
Take a lot of DEET if it has rained! It is A fun course but their sand traps need a lot of work some were mud, the others, lakes. They have great rental clubs and very nice staff. Overall a good day of golf if you are at SPI.
Near perfection
The course was beautiful. The bay breeze helped dissipate some of the heat. The course wasn't as difficult as I was led to believe. Even though there was some water in play, I loved the that there were lots of sand traps. The only complaint I have is that the first three holes are nearly unplayable because of the rising sun in your eyes to greet you for your 7:45 am tee time. Lost a few golf balls that way.
Bunkers need work
Several of the bunkers only had dirt and no sand. The bunkers that were playable had new sand and difficult to play.
Great Layout but course needs some TLC
I always enjoy playing the South Padre Island Course when I come down to South Padre Island for vacation. I had not played the course in at least 5 years and this was the worst condition I saw the course in. The greens were fine and the fairways were decent. But all of the bunkers were in very poor shape. This is a fun course to play, just needs a little bit of TLC to get it back to the course I remembered playing years ago.
