South Padre Island Golf Club - 18 Holes Course
About
This southernmost course in Texas, despite its name, is actually situated on the mainland in Port Isabel. Architects Chris Cole and Stephen Caplinger carved an outstanding layout out of the wild native Gulf coast vegetation, with several holes bordering the Laguna Madre. The club has hosted the Texas Senior Open and the South Texas PGA Southern Championship since its opening in 1997.
The design features wide fairways bordered by native yucca, mesquite, and cactus, and the windy conditions often make it challenging to keep it in the fairway. Errant shots will be lost for sure. Others that fail to find the fairway will bury in waste areas and deep rough.
For the most part, the longer holes seem to play more downwind, while the shorter ones play into the wind. The large greens are of championship quality. Three of them are multi-tiered.
No. 5 is the feature hole, a picturesque, 335-yard, par 4 with a tee shot that must carry the Laguna Madre into a sharp dogleg-right fairway. On the back, No. 11 is unique because of the giant mesquite tree that dominates the middle of the fairway. Hole 12 can be interesting: it's a short par 3 that is completely surrounded by water.
The facility has plans for slow expansion based on how quickly the residential lots are developed. A second 18-hole course is under construction, with three holes complete. Designed by Chris Cole and Jeff Potts, this layout will feature only par 3 and par 4 holes and play to 5,400 yards.
Getting there : The club is on Hwy 100 before you cross over the causeway onto the island of South Padre. Turn right on FM 520 and continue for 2.5 miles to the course.

Every year
My father-in-law and I play here on our annual family vacation to the island. The course during the week is really great for pace of play. We finished 18 in about 3 hours and played another 9 just because.
The greens are soft, so you can be very aggressive in your approach shot for sure.
Be sure you have plenty of water and cold towels as it can get hot on the back 9 away from the bay side.
Overall a great round. We will return for sure!
This course has a challenging layout from the back tees.
Course conditions are good and the greens are consistent and accept full shots well. Be sure to pack mosquito spray as the area has been getting rain. The course bunkers are getting new sand as well. Overall enjoyed playing and was able to complete the round in 2 hours.
Average course
''This is the only course I have played near SPI, so I cannot compare it to other courses in the area. The course was average, but I only paid $35. The fairways were generous, but bare in spots. The greens were good, but very flat, no undulations. The were some nice views of the bay on the front nine. Overall, a good experience, but nothing special.
Bring the Off!
Great course, lots of water holes. Got my first birdie on this course. Make sure your bring lots of Off! and apply it on every 3rd hole.
Interesting Layout
Strength of course was the routing. Lots of water and natural areas. Great value ! Condition of fairways, greens, and cart paths only average at best. Constant 20 mph wind was a challenge. Staff was very friendly
Nice course
Nice course for novice player
Nice layout
Fairways could have been better but nice overall
Great morning!
Overall great day. No complaints! Teed off on time (actually early!) Parred 5 holes, so yea it was a good morning!
Loved it!
A little tricky first time. Would love to play here again. Good course
Ok if your not afraid of snakes
Only one of us played the entire course. One of us is very very nervous of snakes. First hole they have it posted about snakes. Spoke to the starter and he said he only saw one so far today.
Therefore one of us left the course at the 1 st hole.
More signs further at other holes about watching for snakes. Not fun, made me very nervous as well.
Thanks about the "off" recommendation
