South Padre Island Golf Club - 18 Holes Course
About
This southernmost course in Texas, despite its name, is actually situated on the mainland in Port Isabel. Architects Chris Cole and Stephen Caplinger carved an outstanding layout out of the wild native Gulf coast vegetation, with several holes bordering the Laguna Madre. The club has hosted the Texas Senior Open and the South Texas PGA Southern Championship since its opening in 1997.
The design features wide fairways bordered by native yucca, mesquite, and cactus, and the windy conditions often make it challenging to keep it in the fairway. Errant shots will be lost for sure. Others that fail to find the fairway will bury in waste areas and deep rough.
For the most part, the longer holes seem to play more downwind, while the shorter ones play into the wind. The large greens are of championship quality. Three of them are multi-tiered.
No. 5 is the feature hole, a picturesque, 335-yard, par 4 with a tee shot that must carry the Laguna Madre into a sharp dogleg-right fairway. On the back, No. 11 is unique because of the giant mesquite tree that dominates the middle of the fairway. Hole 12 can be interesting: it's a short par 3 that is completely surrounded by water.
The facility has plans for slow expansion based on how quickly the residential lots are developed. A second 18-hole course is under construction, with three holes complete. Designed by Chris Cole and Jeff Potts, this layout will feature only par 3 and par 4 holes and play to 5,400 yards.
Getting there : The club is on Hwy 100 before you cross over the causeway onto the island of South Padre. Turn right on FM 520 and continue for 2.5 miles to the course.

Average course
''This is the only course I have played near SPI, so I cannot compare it to other courses in the area. The course was average, but I only paid $35. The fairways were generous, but bare in spots. The greens were good, but very flat, no undulations. The were some nice views of the bay on the front nine. Overall, a good experience, but nothing special.
Bring the Off!
Great course, lots of water holes. Got my first birdie on this course. Make sure your bring lots of Off! and apply it on every 3rd hole.
Interesting Layout
Strength of course was the routing. Lots of water and natural areas. Great value ! Condition of fairways, greens, and cart paths only average at best. Constant 20 mph wind was a challenge. Staff was very friendly
Nice course
Nice course for novice player
Nice layout
Fairways could have been better but nice overall
Great morning!
Overall great day. No complaints! Teed off on time (actually early!) Parred 5 holes, so yea it was a good morning!
Loved it!
A little tricky first time. Would love to play here again. Good course
Ok if your not afraid of snakes
Only one of us played the entire course. One of us is very very nervous of snakes. First hole they have it posted about snakes. Spoke to the starter and he said he only saw one so far today.
Therefore one of us left the course at the 1 st hole.
More signs further at other holes about watching for snakes. Not fun, made me very nervous as well.
Course has character
We played behind a scramble tournament. Unfortunately, the team in front was very slow, so it took much longer than it should have. The staff warned us, do that was courteous of them. Nice course and a lot of fun.
Good Job
I have played this course since it opened. I have seen it in really great shape......and to where I quit playing it. It is really on it's way back to being the great course it started out as. Good staff....friendly rangers.....all in all a great time. I had my wife with me and she enjoyed taking pics of all the wild life and vegetation.
Just okay
Have played this course several times now and this time around, it was just ok. Lack of yardages marked on the course made it tough on our foursome to get around as quickly as we'd have liked. In rating this course from previous years, it's slipped a bit.
Nice course fun time
my first trip to SP GOLF CLUB. The greens were recently ariated and sand put on them. The court is well maintained and a a good challenge for any golfer. I will return and you will enjoy the course too.
Twiilight
We played the course while vacation on a Saturday Twilight. I think the twilight rate is a little high for the course. The greens were recently punched and sandy / fluffy. I did like the course layout. The fairways are green and in decent shape. Pace was slow. We were a twosome and got behind two groups of six. One group allow us to play thru however the second group did not. We skipped hole 9 and played it later. No Marshall on the course. Overall the course is average but could be better with a little attention.
This course is second to none!
We enjoyed playing at South Padre Island Golf Couse and had a great experience!
Gr8 course
Highly recommend this golf course. Fairways are good, greens are in gr8 shape, bunkers actually have sand in them.
Course in great shape
It's been over a year since I last played here. The course is in great condition. Excellent greens
Thanks about the "off" recommendation
