This southernmost course in Texas, despite its name, is actually situated on the mainland in Port Isabel. Architects Chris Cole and Stephen Caplinger carved an outstanding layout out of the wild native Gulf coast vegetation, with several holes bordering the Laguna Madre. The club has hosted the Texas Senior Open and the South Texas PGA Southern Championship since its opening in 1997.

The design features wide fairways bordered by native yucca, mesquite, and cactus, and the windy conditions often make it challenging to keep it in the fairway. Errant shots will be lost for sure. Others that fail to find the fairway will bury in waste areas and deep rough.

For the most part, the longer holes seem to play more downwind, while the shorter ones play into the wind. The large greens are of championship quality. Three of them are multi-tiered.

No. 5 is the feature hole, a picturesque, 335-yard, par 4 with a tee shot that must carry the Laguna Madre into a sharp dogleg-right fairway. On the back, No. 11 is unique because of the giant mesquite tree that dominates the middle of the fairway. Hole 12 can be interesting: it's a short par 3 that is completely surrounded by water.

The facility has plans for slow expansion based on how quickly the residential lots are developed. A second 18-hole course is under construction, with three holes complete. Designed by Chris Cole and Jeff Potts, this layout will feature only par 3 and par 4 holes and play to 5,400 yards.

Getting there : The club is on Hwy 100 before you cross over the causeway onto the island of South Padre. Turn right on FM 520 and continue for 2.5 miles to the course.

Fun little course.

Course wasn't difficult but played tough with the wind in play. Not a top quality course and very dry out there. The greens were large, in good shape, and many were challenging. We are still looking for a decent course in this part of Texas and probably won't play this one again.

The course is a little tired

The course was great a couple of years ago.
I don't know if it is the lack of rain or money problems, but the traps have no sand the tee boxes and fairways are in need of help and the greens are in poor condition. With a little water and TLC the course would be great. Staff is very good.
Value going through Golfnow is good. I would not want to pay full price at this time.

SPI Golf

I played this golf course on vacation. I played it several times many years ago in the early 2000's...the resort has really built up since the last time I played. The conditions were fair to good depending on the hole. With all the additional developements, the course doesn't seem to have benefitted as much I as would have imagined.

Its a fun course, kinda of a Kiawah Island type setup. The front nine plays along the Laguna Madre for several holes with a nice view of SPI. I recomend this course...its the best in the area near SPI.

Don't kid yourself, it's a 2-star course!

Though there's plenty of trouble to be found, the layout is ho-hum and the upkeep is average at best. The course was horribly over-watered. Bunkers were either soaked or hard as a rock. We played @ $38 and it wasn't really worth it. If this was a Midwestern course, it'd go bankrupt @ $38 per head. I'd compare it to the average municipal course but in poorer condition. If you're a good player, look elsewhere, but if you shoot above 90 you'll probably enjoy the track. I'm dumbfounded this course has been routinely ranked 4+ stars... perhaps that's due to a lack of options!?

Fun course

Played course two couples had a great time. Very windy one day so, not as much fun. We let a few twosomes thru otherwise it was easy-breezy. Lost a few balls and putting for me was difficult to feel as I don't play a lot of bermuda greens.
Golf Now got us GREAT rates!!

Rough shape

Greens were ok. The rest of the property is awefull. Golf courses are supposed to have grass not dirt. You have to play winter rules here. Some bunkers had good sand but most were mud. Lots of drainage problems. Upkeep of property is very poor. The setting for this golf course is great. Time for a complete rebuild.
