South Padre Island Golf Club - 18 Holes Course

About
This southernmost course in Texas, despite its name, is actually situated on the mainland in Port Isabel. Architects Chris Cole and Stephen Caplinger carved an outstanding layout out of the wild native Gulf coast vegetation, with several holes bordering the Laguna Madre. The club has hosted the Texas Senior Open and the South Texas PGA Southern Championship since its opening in 1997.
The design features wide fairways bordered by native yucca, mesquite, and cactus, and the windy conditions often make it challenging to keep it in the fairway. Errant shots will be lost for sure. Others that fail to find the fairway will bury in waste areas and deep rough.
For the most part, the longer holes seem to play more downwind, while the shorter ones play into the wind. The large greens are of championship quality. Three of them are multi-tiered.
No. 5 is the feature hole, a picturesque, 335-yard, par 4 with a tee shot that must carry the Laguna Madre into a sharp dogleg-right fairway. On the back, No. 11 is unique because of the giant mesquite tree that dominates the middle of the fairway. Hole 12 can be interesting: it's a short par 3 that is completely surrounded by water.
The facility has plans for slow expansion based on how quickly the residential lots are developed. A second 18-hole course is under construction, with three holes complete. Designed by Chris Cole and Jeff Potts, this layout will feature only par 3 and par 4 holes and play to 5,400 yards.
Getting there : The club is on Hwy 100 before you cross over the causeway onto the island of South Padre. Turn right on FM 520 and continue for 2.5 miles to the course.

Talk about dead
Warning! Dead grass ahead. What a disappointment. Something went terribly wrong with the groundskeeper. Looks like they sprayed all the tee boxes, rough and parts of the fairways with Roundup. All 18 holes completely dead. Greens were decent and I loved the layout. Bunkers were hard as concrete. Don’t pay to play till grass is OK. There should be a warning when booking tee times.
Some greens are dead and no cart path
Good course but no cart path on some holes and we’re asking for 90 degree to ball.. some greens were dead. To pricy for ok course.
Great Round
Staff was friendly, Course was in great shape. Biggest improvement was the attitude and friendliness of the course marshals, quite often before we would be met at the first tee box by an overzealous somewhat power hungry marshal that was trying to be intimidating before we had pulled our driver out. Absolutely was a detriment to an otherwise great experience. Hats off to management for bringing onboard new Marshalls that are good representatives of an excellent course.

Beautiful nature to go with golf! Great layout, all holes are unique and are fun to play.
A challenging course with lots of opportunities for improvement in conditions
We enjoyed the round but we’re surprised that the condition s weren’’t better
Paul & Korianne
Great that the gps is working now and we can get the yardage off the flagsticks.
Last minute plans
My friends, and I decided Friday, that we wanted to play Monday, and it worked out great.
Paul & Korianne
Most flags do not have gps so you can’t get the yardage with a Bushnell which is very frustrating
Paul & Korianne
Only issue I have is not all the pins have gps on them so I can’t get my yardages with my Bushnell. Quite frustrating as going long can be so unforgiving
Best golf in the valley
SPI course has a great layout, most of the greens are in good shape and they are working to get the the bare spots fixed.
Paul & Korianne
Greens were a little better/quicker than the time before.
Paul & Korianne
Have always loved the layout, and enjoyed playing here. Always a challenge, and so much nature to please the sole, and soften the Madre grabbing your balls.?Course not in as good condition as pre Covid, Greens are a bit slower but nice for the most part. Will always come back for more!
Best We’ve played in the Valley
This course is so picturesque! It’s well designed and well maintained. The bonus was a great lunch at Divots. All around great atmosphere. And I got a birdie. Fun!
