South Padre Island Golf Club - 18 Holes Course

About
This southernmost course in Texas, despite its name, is actually situated on the mainland in Port Isabel. Architects Chris Cole and Stephen Caplinger carved an outstanding layout out of the wild native Gulf coast vegetation, with several holes bordering the Laguna Madre. The club has hosted the Texas Senior Open and the South Texas PGA Southern Championship since its opening in 1997.
The design features wide fairways bordered by native yucca, mesquite, and cactus, and the windy conditions often make it challenging to keep it in the fairway. Errant shots will be lost for sure. Others that fail to find the fairway will bury in waste areas and deep rough.
For the most part, the longer holes seem to play more downwind, while the shorter ones play into the wind. The large greens are of championship quality. Three of them are multi-tiered.
No. 5 is the feature hole, a picturesque, 335-yard, par 4 with a tee shot that must carry the Laguna Madre into a sharp dogleg-right fairway. On the back, No. 11 is unique because of the giant mesquite tree that dominates the middle of the fairway. Hole 12 can be interesting: it's a short par 3 that is completely surrounded by water.
The facility has plans for slow expansion based on how quickly the residential lots are developed. A second 18-hole course is under construction, with three holes complete. Designed by Chris Cole and Jeff Potts, this layout will feature only par 3 and par 4 holes and play to 5,400 yards.
Getting there : The club is on Hwy 100 before you cross over the causeway onto the island of South Padre. Turn right on FM 520 and continue for 2.5 miles to the course.

Terrible Conditions
They told me that there were temporary tee boxes but that the rest of the course was in great condition. Overall, there is so much dead grass - I know there has been a water problem. The temporary tees all play like forward tees, and a handful are so bad that they put driving range mats down. It was a waste of time playing, and I normally love playing any sort of golf. They also only take off 15%. It is not worth anywhere near $70. Tony Butler is so much better even though I have to drive 35mins
Tees GUR
Tee boxes are all under tepair. The course has lost a lot of grass in the rough so the fairways are ok and greens are good. Balance of course is very much just dirt. Course needs much attention!!
Conditions have deteriorated, but still full price
I've played this course about once a year for several years. This was the worst condition I have ever seen it in,. All of the tee boxes were being re-done, so we played all 18 holes from forward, temporary tees, mostly in very poor condition. This radically shortened the course. For example, all par 3s were less than 100 yards. Also, they have sprayed weed killer around the fringe of several greens and in large areas of the fairways, so all these areas are bare. Yet they still charge the full amount as if the course was in good condition.
Also, there is no drinking water on the course. There is a bottle refill station outside the pro shop, but it doesn't work.
At least the greens are still mostly good, and, where they haven't been sprayed with weed killer, the fairways are OK.
You’ve got to be honest on what the course offers right now. Tee boxes are garbage and the grass in fairways and roughs needs all the work.
Goat patch
It’s regrettable what’s happened to this golf course, wrong chemicals applied to the course and burned it up. All tee boxes are having to be redone greens are in sorry shape yet they still want you to pay full price for a round of golf. This is a goat patch masquerading as a golf course. Definitely not worth the money. Stay away
Poor condition
The current course conditions are terrible, dead grass everywhere except for fairway that are not in the best shape either. Almost all tee boxes are being replaced due to dead grass so tee boxes are temporarily moved either to the women’s tee box or off to the sides. For the price of a round not worth the money!
Horrid Conditions and Incompent Marshal
Course was in horrible condition which is unfortunate as it has the potiential to be possibly the most naturally beautiful courses in the RGV. The course layout is nice and features interesting holes that requires a variety of shots. Marshal was incompent and unable to maintain pace of play. We waited on every shot for the group in front, had the Marshal tell us to speed up the pace of our play despite us not being out of position. Meanwhile the complaining group behind hit into us while speaking with the Marshal.
Poor condition
Every hole had chemical burns, from misuse of chemicals. Should alert patron prior or reduce green fees. Also mosquitoes were beyond belief. Have played cours before and was in excellent condition, this time it was badly damaged.
Course needs a lot of work:(
I have played this course quite a bit, used to be a member. Came back for work trip and was very disappointed in the course condition. Great track and challenging but whoever is managing the course sure blew it! Dead grass everywhere, dirt tee boxes and dead areas around the green. Hopefully they will get this corrected but they have a lot of work a head of them.
Staff is great and I enjoy the 19th hole. The marshals do a great job and keep the pace of play moving.
Not worth the $
Approximately 8 weeks ago the ground staff sprayed the course to kill the weeds. Instead they totally nuked the course by killing to the dirt all the ground cover. Tee boxes, rough and green approaches destroyed. It will take a major effort to regrow which the course has not attempted to do yet. STAY AWAY.
What happened?
What looks like dead grass from t boxes through the fairway to areas around the greens. Evidently grass killer was used. Greens had been punched and sanded which seems late from what I know about other courses I play. There are still bad spots in the greens from prior year issues. Potentially a great course set up near a great beach area at SPI. I don’t think it was worth $58 on a Monday. I’ve played this course dozens of times and am disappointed.
SLOW
Made the mistake of playing on holiday weekend-5 1/4 hours. The 2 groups ahead of us playing from blue tees, and taking 2 or 3 shots to get past the forward tee blocks. No Marshall's on the course for entire round.
Never play here on a weekend or BYOB.
Huge areas of dormant/dead grass on fairways and around greens from? misapplied chemicals.
Burnt-chemical/herbicide?
Large swaths of fairways and around greens are light brown grass next to green grass. Many greens have damaged areas. Many areas of "rough" are bare clay.
The layout is challenging but fair for straight hitter.
The standard price is excessive for the course condition but they obviously need $$ for remediation. Hot Deal price plus monthly $10 coupon is only way I play.
