Bay Forest Golf Course
About
Amongst the chemical plants, refinery towers, and wood-lined waterways of La Porte lies the 18-hole Jay Riviere municipal known as Bay Forest. Riviere's design opened in 1988, featuring a tight front nine that opens up on the lake-dominated back side. Water is in play on 16 of 18 holes. Because of La Porte's proximity to the Gulf, the coastal winds make this a long course.
Despite its tight nature, the front nine offers a few nice birdie opportunities, including the short par 3 No. 6. This hole generally only requires a 9 iron to carry the bunker fronting the green.
On the back, the par 5 No. 10 is one of the most birdie-friendly holes on the course. It's followed by the signature No. 11-a great-looking dogleg right that bends around a pond to a well-bunkered green. The play with the approach on 11 is to leave it below the hole.
The par 5 No. 18 is a challenging finisher that requires good golf shots into the wind and the accuracy to avoid the water that sneaks into the fairway in the landing area from the right. The second shot must carry water and a bunker, and the recommended play on the approach is to keep it on the right side of the green.
Getting there : From Hwy. 45 south, take the 610 Loop north. When you come to Hwy. 225 head east and take the Pasadena exit. Turn right, find Hwy. 146 and go south (right). Next, get off at the Fairmont Pkwy. exit and turn left. When you get to South Broadway St., turn right and drive 1 mile to the course. The clubhouse is on the right side of the street.

the golf carts were in good condition
I enjoyed playing this course and will play again.
Diamond in the Rough
Let's start with the best thing about this municipal course - they make you feel like you are a member of a country club. Friendly, beers in a bag of ice, 6 or more they give you a cooler with ice. The course like most courses near Galveston Bay is fairly flat; but they've done a nice job with elevating most greens and the greens actually have some contour to them. The green rolled great and the fairways were in great shape. Granted it was only about 2 weeks after a month of rain and I'm sure it could dry out in a hurry. At one time this course was trapped very well around the greens; now, some of the traps have been allowed to grow over. Still a challenge for the average golfer. Tree'd well, but forgiving enough for someone who slices or pushes the ball.
For the money, I paid $43, it is as good a municiple course experience and would recommend to anyone but a scratch golfer who may not find it challenging enough. I give it a 4 amateur municiple rating.
Great shape
The course was in great shape considering the drought we are going through. Very friendly and helpful staff.
Nice course - slow play
Awesome layout; decent conditions - overall one of the nicer courses available for outside play. The 'deltas'; bring bug spray (knats are horrible); and they allow members to play fivesomes (which I understand, they pay the dues - but it results in extremely slow play for everyone- this practice is ridiculous for ANY course). Staff is very friendly. In summary one of best values in the area. I would definitely recommend.
Nice course for the money
Nice course
It's worth the money
I would only recommend they invest in their restaurant
Great
Great course would definitely recommend it to a friend
well run golf course, everything works as it should
great course to play, everything works as it should.
form the staff at the counter to the starter at the first tee. the golf course is in excellent shape! and the other golfers on the course are a pleasure to play with.
Another GOOD outing at Bayforest!
Been playing here for years, got a golfnow deal I could not pass up, staff as always friendly & nice to see us return. Although the snack bar was busy, we were allowed to call in a lunch order for pick-up on the turn, great lunch! Beer cart made quick rounds & checked on us every time, so we did not starve or go thirsty!
greens are rolling good, fairways are well watered right now, bunkers had water but overall course was playable due to all the rain we are getting, thanks again BF!
Love the layout but not the greens
Called ahead to see how the greens were and was told they were good but they were actually poor (w/ some weeds and lots of bumpiness. Love the layout but prob wouldn't play again til greens are improved!
Great Course
I play here as much as possible. Quality of the course for what you pay is amazing. Have been playing here since the early 90's.
It's about more than golf...
The greens are coming around, but are still a little less than 'true'. The layout always provides a different challenge. If it's too windy or dry, your ball will find water. Bring an extra sleeve--at least. On this day, it was waterlogged which made it play much longer than normal.
All that being said, at the end of this round, I signed up to keep my handicap at this course. While I like the course and the way it's well managed, I 'joined' there because of the other golfers I've met while walking on. The regulars take their golf seriously, but not too seriously--if you know what I mean...
I could feel Harvey Penick's spirit at this course and his most famous quote, "If you play golf, you are my friend."
One last tip...if you bring a banana to eat during the round, don't leave it in the cart on the first tee. There's a fat little banana stealing squirrel there and he'll have it peeled and gone!
Great Local Course
Local course in good playing shape and at a fair price.
interesting
nice layout, weather kept the course from being in the best condition. pretty wet.
needs improvement
The course was not in good shape. Pictures are not accurate.
Getting There
I like this course due to the water hazards being everywhere. Makes you work the bag, instead of just grabbing the next longest club. I've played it several times. This time I played, however, the greens weren't in the best of shape, some bare spots and they were sanded. Sand made the speed of each green different and unpredictable. Hopefully, it's just the growing pains as the course prepares for further in the season. On the other hand, the fairways were in great shape. Tee boxes were well mowed. Only complaint is the greens. Food was fantastic, and I was glad to see a beer cart out on the course.
Nice course for beginners
I played my first round of golf at Bay Forest and have gone back because I enjoyed it. The course itself is in good shape and fun to play.
Steady Course...has consistent greens
They do a great job maintaining course. Most greens on other courses are not so good but Bay Forest does a good job even in Fall season. I have grown attached to course because always meet friendly golfers. I love the fact they have a marshall on weekdays putting groups together.
Mizunoman Approved!
Fun Course
This is one of my favorite public courses in the area. It offers a challenge for the better golfers but is also not too difficult for someone who is average like myself and just looking to have a good time. The greens are in pretty good shape and the fairways are nice as well. Some other courses in the area have fairways that are like hitting off of dry, cracked mud so I appreciate that this course is in pretty good shape.
Great course.
A little tough because it's a bit narrow in spots but a good challenging course. You have an extra par 5 and an almost drivable par 4.
Decent condition for this time of year
Course was in decent condition for this time of year. Fairways were pretty hard, but that is normal for Houston in the wintertime.
Greens were decent and rolled ok. There were some greens with thin spots and a lot of greens had Poa in them.
Staff is friendly.
If you have not played the course, it has a lot of water to deal with but the landing areas are fairly generous.
