Very fun course
I had a ton of fun out on the course. The course was in great condition and the greens were quick and challenging. There aren’t a ton of risk as far as water goes but there is a ton of big bunkers and tall grass to make sure you’re hitting the ball straight.
It was an overall fun course and i hope to be back soon!
Hidden Gem
Played 26May2018. Tanners Brook is a hidden gem, located approx. 20 miles north of the Twin Cities metro. The value for the course is unmatched. My experience with the staff has been great each time I've played here. The pro shop has most of what you'd find at any course. The clubhouse has a full bar, kitchen, and banquet room. There is a large putting green and full length driving range, both located near the clubhouse. The course is easily walkable with only minor elevation changes and minimal walking between holes, except at the turn and playing 17. I'll get to 17 in a bit. The front nine is primarily links style. The back nine is a mix of links and parkland. My group played the back tees, most of which were not level, compared to the white tees. Trust me, there was nothing added to the holes by playing the back tees. Speaking of the back tees, they're a combination black/blue on 12 holes, so you're playing the back tees on most of course if you play the blue tees. The fairways are mainly level and were in great shape. The rough is low, but thick. The greens were in great shape, with sufficient undulation to make putting fair, yet challenging. Getting to and from hole 17 is the only detraction on the course. Hole 17 is located in a mosquito breeding ground. Unlike all of the other holes, hole 17 requires walking approx. 100 yards through what seems like a primordial wooded area to get to the tee box and from the green to hole 18. Due to the mosquitoes 100 yards seemed like a mile. Not only is it the greatest distance between holes, it's the worst experience of the round. It would be great if the paths to and from 17 were sprayed, but you might want to bring your own spray as you'll need it here.
If you like a challenge on a great couse at a great value, this is the course for you.
Beautiful Links
I loved the design. Open enough for the novice to get it around, and the better player will appreciate the variety of shots. The greens hold, the ball rolls in the fairways. Pace of play was good. Guys in the shop were friendly, and the burger and fries plate was delicious. We'll definitely go back!
Excellent value
Enjoyable course, well laid out and excellent value. The staff is very friendly and the course is well maintained with an excellent pace of play.
great day (except score) at Tanners
Greens were soft.
Fairways were perfect - when I could find them.
Would be nice if they made the cups bigger.
Good round
I was paired with another twosome, course layout is very nice, not too difficult and pace of play was good. Price was reasonable with golfnow hot deal discounts.
Good value, friendly staff
I played Tanners Brook several times this year and enjoy the course and find the staff to be exceptionally friendly and helpful. It is a moderately challenging course with several excellent holes. Would recommend it to anyone willing to take a short drive from the Twin Cities to the Forest Lake area.
WOW, DID THIS PLACE GO DOWN HILL...
Front nine greens almost unplayable, fairways lacked grass all over the place, bunkers are like concrete, from tee you have no idea where to hit, nothing defining the fairways other than the knee high fescue outside of the rough... If I didn't know better, I would think the front nine is a goat pasture in the Dakotas!! Back nine is in a bit better condition, but still no idea directionally, meaning: When standing on most tees you are blind to the hole, or even the area to hit to, to see the hole. Last three holes are the best, but the bugs are frickin brutal!! Also, you have Black tees on the card but only found 3 Black teeing areas or markers on the course??? I can see why you are only charging 22 bucks w/cart to play here..
Tough with wind
Day was very hot with wind. Making it hard to play some of the holes. Two players we were paired up with were in hazard most of day looking for there balls. Great people to talk with but course was about there playing skill s.
No GPS
Although I liked playing this course < I wish they offered GPS ( willing to pay extra) there. The course also was not fully marked with yardage or visible distance Marker. Because of this I will not returning to this club to play in near future.
Balance of links and woods, great greens.
I love Tanners. It's a challenging course and when I play there, I always feel like I need to strike the ball and putt well to achieve a score I am proud of. I have never felt like I lucked into a good score there.
The greens are stellar. Best thing about the course. The worst thing? The bunkers are sometimes rocky and not consistent around the course. There are some wet/damaged fairway areas but mostly they are in good condition for a public course getting so much play. When the fescue grows out, the course plays like a true links, especially on the front 9. You've gotta hit fairways. If you're a player who tends to block the ball or hook it... missing left isn't ideal on nearly any hole. As a lefty, it's been great to play here so often to learn to hit a draw!
I hate that the 14th green is in the landing area of errant tee shots from the 12th tee... but that's about it for layout complaints.
The finishing 4 holes are always something I look forward to, with two reachable par 5's and the beautiful (and short) 17th.
Bad for "Singles" and "Couples"
Decent course, however the staff is unusually occupied with trying to pair you with others if you are golfing alone. I like to golf by myself or with my wife, and the last thing I want to deal with are teenagers trying to tell us that we have to golf with a group of guys we don't know.
Leave me alone and let me golf.
Pretty good course
Some wet spots with bad muddy areas.. still early in season
Very nice greens
Course has very nice greens for early April. Course a bit wet - but it is April 8th. Lay out good for mid-handicappers. We played in strong 20mph plus winds, so that impacted play. Links feel, mostly flat with wetlands on almost every hole. We will play later in year.
many hazards
It's lucky I enjoy challenges, because I found one. It was a nice, windy day early in the season and I got my exercise.
Course in good shape for very early April ------ always a fun course to play
