good place to play late in the fall season
Considering how late in the season it is this is a good place to play. Not a lot of leaves that come into play unless you really are off-target. The course is well maintained and the greens are consistent and challenging. The 19th hole is always a good place to review the round and make future plans.
Enjoyed the fall round
Course was in good shape pace of play was a little slow due to great fall weather, great staff, good food
Quasi-Links Style, Plain Vanilla Course
Tanner's Brook Golf Course provides an adequate golf experience, but not much more. Five sets of tees ranging from 6,887 yards to 5,332 yards make it suitable for a wide range of golfers, including seniors, women, and juniors. The course is fairly flat, looking much like the farm fields and marshland that surround it. The fairways are mostly straight, with maybe a gentle bend, but only one hole could really be called a dogleg. After playing it a few times, I am left with the feeling that there are no really memorable holes on the course, it's really a plain vanilla kind of experience. That's not necessarily bad, because a lot of folks prefer vanilla ice cream to other flavors, it's a matter of personal preference. There are no trees to speak of on the course, so it superficially resembles a links course, but there are no undulating fairways, mounds, or bunkers in the middle of the fairway. Another difference is that run-up shots are not possible on many of the holes because there will be a pond or ditch that must be carried to reach the green. The major hazard to avoid is the marshland that is ubiquitous. Stray too far from the fairway and you'll lose a ball or two. Actually, the cart paths are another hazard that should be mentioned. These are constructed of compacted gravel, and filled with potholes. Hit one of those at speed and your back will be in jeopardy. The holes also collect water, so for a few days after a rainfall you'll be driving off the path or risk a ditch water shower. Probably the best thing about the course is the greens. These are subtly contoured and surprisingly fast. If you can putt well here, you'll probably do well anywhere. The two most entertaining holes on the course are probably the 6th and the 18th. Number 6 is a 364 yard (from the white tees) par 4. The challenge here is on the approach to a very long and narrow green that slopes from right to left down to a water hazard. Trees (some of the few on the course) protect the right side of the green, so a high cut shot might be the best choice to try for a par. The finishing hole is a 490 yard (white tees) par 5, straightaway with OB on the left. Two good shots will leave you with a wedge or short iron to carry a water hazard into a green that slopes from back to front. The shot has some visual appeal, with a large red brick barn about 30 yards past the green and to the left, and two trees only about three yards back right beyond the green. I've never seen trees this close to a green anywhere else. Tanner's Brook is worth playing at least once, and the greens fee won't set you back too much. You might decide that you like a little vanilla from time to time.
golf
very good,very good,very good
Great value
Course was in great shape which made it a great value. Staff was very friendly and pace of play was great.
poor course conditions
Fairway and greens were rough
Great greens
Course was in great shape. Greens were very nice and fast. Love the place.
A little work to be done
Put some money in the cart paths , greens are a little rough , not a 55 dollar course , pace of play was awful, two groups on every hole
Great course
I will be playing here again this year, great course and well worth the drive from the Cities.
solid course
I have played course several times fun challenging not a good coarse for beginner
Excellent experience
The course offers an interesting but not difficult challenge. The course was in excellent condition and the greens were particularly well-maintained. Quick and accurate.
The most important thing however was the friendliness and accommodation staff. The young man who was working as a starter and a golfer at University Of Wisconsin Superior was very engaging and helpful. After playing, I spoke with the inside staff and found the same overall willingness and friendliness, which is quite unusual nowadays. Excellent experience I would recommend the course to anyone.
First time played and enjoyed the course.
I booked a time on Golfnow and was pleased by the layout and condition of the greens.
I found that the course has some forced carries unless you wanted to lay up way short.
I had no problem with the condition of the course, the rough is very rough in most locations and finding balls is tough if you go into it.
I felt that the number of tee boxes made it possible for many skill levels to be able to enjoy the course.
I found the speed of the greens to be fine although I was told that when the weather got drier they became very hard to putt on.
I would go back and play the course again if I can get another good deal online.
I had to travel 40 miles to play the course so the costs becomes time and gas and the green fee.
Rude worker
I recently moved into Hugo Minnesota and my neighbor suggested Tanners brook as a golf course to play. I'm a frequent avid golfer and was gonna play it and get a membership if I liked it which I did its a beautiful golf course. I went in After the round to check on membership prices and was stunned by the service. Sadly the man working behind the counter who's name was drew was the most disrespectful employee ever. He was rude and had no time to answer my questions when I was the only person in the proshop. He was also very rude to a group of college kids who were golfing in front of us and they were very well behaved. I now got a membership at nearby oneka golf course which is a nice course as well just not quite as nice. They actually care about there golfers and don't have drew working there. So if you're gonna golf here call first to see who's working and certainly don't be a member here.
Terrible
Absolutely disgusting the shape this course is in. Uneven rock hard tee boxes littered with broken tees and cigarette butts, rock hard fairways with old irrigation ditches running through them, the cart paths are in shambles and the greens are pitted. I will not golf there ever again and would not recommend this course to anyone.
Priced right well maintained golf course
Course has mixture of links and woods style holes.
Good value for the money
The course fairways were not in the best of shape but playable, the greens were in very good condition. Pace of play was excellant and except for #17 which is a mosquito magnet surrounded by tall trees and a marsh, it was a fun day.
Staff was great, course was not.
Staff was friendly and accommodating but the course was over priced and of poor quality. It's not very often you see dandelions on every tee box.
Course is not worth $52
Course was in terrible shape. Greens are tricky, which would be fun, but they are in such bad shape your ball bounces when you putt. Tee boxes were so hard you could barely get a tee in the ground. We had lift in place in the fairways, so our ball would be on grass. They do not pair up twosomes, so the pace of play is brutal. Staff is super friendly and helpful.
Great layout, nice mix of holes
At first I was a bit worried; the front nine looked like a bit of a cow pasture. But as the holes went by I enjoyed it more and more. The layout was links-style in just the right way, and each hole offered a slightly different challenge. You couldn't just bomb it off each tee, but neither was it target golf all the time. The back nine was more tree-lined and quite pretty. The fairways were not good at all, unfortunately, but the greens were fine. Nice folks and great value. If the fairways improve it'll be awesome. Overall an enjoyable experience, for sure.
If it's the Drew i'm thinking of this shocks me!
Sorry you felt that way, I have played 100's of rounds there and there are a couple rangers who aren't the kindest but the guys behind the counter and the food staff has always been great. you should give it another chance, nothing better in Hugo or close.
