Belfairs Golf Club

Course is filled with people (not just golfers).

On numerous occasions had to deal with people crossing the course (small children aswell), obliviously walking towards the tee points, dogs running freely. With no regards to golf balls flying past them. Doesn't feel like a golf course. Just to add they had no score cards or informational sign posts of what hole, yards or par. So with that combined, it made for one pointless game of golf.

I am 58 but when I left school I spent two years as a trainee green keeper.this course was in fantastic condition , but the council took all the profits from the course , it has sadly lost its edge but for a beginner I would recommend all day long .

First time I have played this course I thought

It was in excellent condition good layout and friendly staff at a reasonable price

We played as a 4 ball today nether of us had played it before we all thought that the course was in excellent condition tees and greens were thoughtless. We did have a couple of long walks to the wrong tee so signage could be improved other than that excellent day great value for money. Will all return soon.

The condition of the course was probably one of the worst I have played on tbh, after paying £18.96 we asked what the condition was like and he said it was very very good.. First time after just 3 holes me and my mate were gonna ask for our money back.. Shame but that was our last visit to belfairs.. Same price as Rayleigh club and that is in excellent condition

Good value for money. No golf hole or flag in 17th green.

Belfairs is much maligned by many people, however at £9 per round, this is good VFM.

It isn't Orsett, neither is it Thorndon Park, but then again it doesn't pretend to be.

It is a publicly owned course set out over public land. Consequently there are plenty of people around, including dog-walkers and horse riders. Nevertheless nearly all were courteous of us golfers and kept off the course, or traversed it once we'd hit our balls.

It was a bit wet, but then again at this time of year so are most courses in the locale. The greens were OK but slowish. However they have never been on the fast side, but for the most part they did putt OK.

Bunkers were a bit of an issue. I guess as public land they can't leave rakes around, so bunkers are either left in a mess or the smoothing over is basic as best.

Having said all this, the layout is interesting as it winds its way through Belfairs Wood and accurate hitting is essential.

I would recommend this place, but don't expect top quality, but you will have fun.

Having not played Belfairs for a few years we wondered what condition it would be in given its public and the summer has been scorchingly hot. Pleasantly surprised to find green tees and consistently grassed and cut greens in good condition. The fairways are mainly bald and hard - but balls goes further! Very friendly staff and what's not to love for an afternoons golf for £10pp. We'll definitely be back.

The amount we got charged for a round on a course in such a bad state was not good

We were intrupted consistently by round people and there dogs running across the holes

I've played this course for over 30 years and it sadly continues to deteriorate. The tees were rough and uneven, even at the end of September the fairways were bald in patches and the greens were all uneven in pace, but mostly slow as they clearly had not been cut for a while.There was fresh sand in the bunkers for a change. However overall this place continues to deteriorate because lack of investment. Not once in the last three rounds have I seen someone actually working the course. It's time someone got a grip on the maintenance aspects of this once lovely course. Perhaps a few signs to tell dog walkers to keep off the fairways when a golfer is about to tee off wouldn't go a miss either.

The first 9 holes were very nice, good mix of challenging holes and good greens.

The second nine was extremely disappointing - the fairways were bare to the point of no grass and were very hard even after a day of rain the day before.

Had children playing football on the 18th green, suppose that's more stupidity from the parents watching.

I haven't played this course for quite a few years, but thought I'd give it a go given it cost £10 for a twilight. I was pleasantly surprised with how nice the course played to be honest. Grass on tee boxes was a bit long, but I suspect it's kept like this to protect them. The greens we a bit slow, but seemed the same pace on all holes. Fairways ok, but not easy to keep them lush with the amount of tress around. Overall, very pleased I played here again & will definitely be back at some point.

We knew it was going to be parkland just didn't realise it was a public park. Dog walkers at every hole, walking across the course and letting their dogs run around off their leads (I love dogs but just not on a golf course).

To top it all get the 18th tee and there is a young couple walking a pram down the centre of the fairway. Noise is also an issue with kids playing, people calling their dogs and the (what seemed to be a constant) sound of police sirens. If you are going to play this course ensure that your insurance is up to date, the amount of people just walking around with out a clue is worrying and is an accident waiting to happen.

I keep going back to this course as it's leas than half a mile form home but every time I play get frustrated by the way locals treat it.

The problem is the course is in a public area frequented by dog walkers and people generally out for a walk who have no respect for people playing golf.

All greens were playable (sort of) if you weren't worried by the fact there are so many divots and all are generally in very bad condition. The course is very well established and fun to play.

When you do get to play it's a case of continually having to be careful of walkers and dogs crossing the fairway as though they own it and then the same people trampling across the greens, plus when you do play a good shot having somebody's dog run off with your ball. A few signs round the course advising people to stay off would help though most likely would get stolen so can partly understand why there are none so given it's a members and pay and play course would benefit from somebody in the office going out and marshalling the course.

The good points are it's cheap and local, which most likely reflects why it's so badly maintained.

Would I play here again? Probably, but only as a last resort as there are many better courses close by that are only cost a little more to play.
