Lyman Orchards in Middlefield is a favorite spot for families because of the nearly 100 varieties of pick-your-own fruit, but it's popular with golfers as well, boasting both a Robert Trent Jones-designed course and one designed by Gary Player. There is also the Apple Nine Course. Situated along the banks of the Connecticut River, the orchards provide the perfect setting for a round of golf. The Jones Course has a diverse terrain, offering dramatically rolling hills on the front nine and a back nine that is routed through woodlands and wetlands. Water comes into play on a total of seven holes on the back and there are more than 40 bunkers strategically placed along the severely sloped greens. Accurate drives and irons will be generously rewarded but it's not overly punishing for high handicappers.

Be a while before we go back

Played this course since it was built and never saw it in worse condition. I know the greens were aerated fairly recently, but the dandelions clover and iratic mowing were surprising. I ll go back, but not for a while. Get it together people!

Lyman orchards jones course

Staff was reasonable but barely attentive. No starter no Rangers terribly slow play five some in front of me tank tops and no clue around the greens nobody fixing their ball marks I was fixing at least a half a dozen on every green fortunately I had the time to work on the greens they were just aerated as well which I wasn’t told

No water on the course to hydrate hydrate my bottle after the second hole had nothing to drink afterwards cart girl came through once on the second hole.

I’ve had some reasonable experiences there otherwise but very displeased with things. I’m about a four handicap right now early in the season played a little bit down south I think I was probably as much as eight over par on the front just couldn’t get through it right slow down on the back nine with my swing dramatically improved was only two down on the back more work to do short game always

It was a nice course. Greens were tough. Not sure if it was partially due to the weather or not, but overall very nice.

Needs work

I have played this course in the past and it seems they have let some of the conditions go and increased the charge to play there (luckily I got a discount via Golf now). Most of the sand traps were not raked out and there was a shortage of rakes. The greens need some attention due to some form of disease. As much as I like the course the GPS on the carts the cart would stop when heading to a ball without warning and we had to push it around 40 yards to get back to power And we were no where near a hazard or green...not fun..

Great day

Lyman’s staff did a great job getting almost 400 golfers onto the course. Course conditions were as expected.

Winter golf is expected to be lackluster

First time playing the Jones course and I loved the layout, I wished the course wasn't so wet surprised they opened it, but oh well it's winter golf just happy to be playing. I have been to some other activities at Lyman and I find it to be a first class facility. Definitely can't wait till spring to return.

Wet but great

71o day in February to play golf. Lyman’s was wet but playable. Except for holes 16, 17 & 18 “ under water “!

They graciously took $10 off our fee. Course was pretty crowded and we all had a great time.

Had lunch at the 1741 Pub & Grill for a great lunch at a great price !!!

Classic layout

Lyman never disappoints. For November, the course was in fantastic shape. The greens were very fast and challenging, not expected for this time of the year. Just a beautiful layout. Bunkers were fantastic shape. I was impressed. Will definitely be back.

High Standards at Lyman

Back Nine Review: Although over fifty years old, the Lyman-Jones course still feels modern, with its spacious and even sprawling greens having carefully modulated mounds and side-slopes, large-scale and sometimes severe bunkers, and several holes that favor heroic play as one option.

Unlike the rolling front side, the back is flat, save for the tall hill on which it begins at tee ten--and ends at green eighteen. But architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr. pulls off an excellent inward half here in nearly every respect. There are plenty of water hazards to go with the sand, and nearly every green is raised, significanltly enough, above its fairway. Your short game will get quite a workout if you’re missing them in regulation. Since one of Jones’ crusades was to devise holes that made for “hard pars," ( though “easy bogeys”), any missed shot on the way to the hole will generally mean trouble: It is then that par will become a not-very-likely prospect; scrambling and recovery is not all that straightfoward on the Jones. I’m not suggesting that this course can’t be beat; it’s just that you’ll have to earn it with consistently good shots, and it will likely take every club in the bag.

Beyond that, there are no real ‘breather holes’ on the back, no simple drive-and-pitch pushovers (unless you drive the ball 280-plus yards, and straight, with regularity). All five par-4’s are demanding to different degrees. Neither par-3 is routine, and both of their greens are well defended, with the 11th being the more dangerous if you hit a weak tee shot. Both par-5’s are hazard-lined, and you’ll need a high quality third shot to hit and hold each green.

One hole stands out just a bit from the others, in my mind: the fifteenth. This is a long 4-par that bends smoothly around a lengthy pond on its right flank, making the drive especially awkward for slicers. A push can be equally damaging. Even more than the drive, the approach must be laser-accurate into the raised green complex, well defended by bunkers to the left and rear.

Conditions were good today, if not up to the level maintained in July. Still, they were very good for November. There were too many leaves on a few of the holes and around some of the greens, but they rolled smoothly and the fairways were fully playable.

Some conclusions: This is a superior track, one of Connecticut’s best, and a course that leaves nothing to be desired: it’s playable, looks great, typically in outstanding condition, and keeps you on your toes. Jones’ hard par/easy bogey mission is fulfilled abundantly at Lyman. Plunging blindly--without a strategy--into any of these holes, whether on the outward or inward half, is certainly foolhardy. Smart golf, instead, will prevail, if you have the forethought and patience to play these holes one careful shot at a time. Having played the Jones Course many, many times, experience has borne this out for me. But some of my best golfing memories, several of them unforgettable, happened here.

Outstanding

Course was in great shape. Greens immaculate. Not sure what other reviews were about. Tee off at 230 and was able to play 18 with plenty of sunlight to spare. Will always come back to play there..
