About

Holes 18
Type Semi-Private
Par 72
Length 7044 yards
Slope 136
Rating 72.7

Legendary golf architects Pete Dye and Perry Dye designed the 18-hole, private course at Plum Creek Golf and Country Club, located in Castle Rock. Opened in 1984, the golf course features 7,044 yards of golf from its championship tees, playing to a par of 72. Dye included various different challenges in this golf course, causing some locals to say that it possesses some of the most difficult holes in the state. The hilly terrain of the well-bunkered course causes many uneven lies. Water hazards also come into play on some holes. Plum Creek Golf and Country Club boasts beautiful views of Castle Rock and the Rockies.

Nice former TPC course

I had fun playing by myself at this nice course. Since it was a former TPC course, I could see some holes are challenging to those average golfers. Overall, it was nice outing. I wish the greens were faster and if they could only clear up the fairways before I started playing, that would be awesome.

If you're playing golf FOR THE GOLF, it's great

Always heard great things about this course decades ago when I was growing up in Colorado and it was still a private club. When I noticed it was open to the public I was excited to give it a try. Becomes readily apparent upon arrival why it is no longer a private club. Club house, facilities, cart paths and cracked parking lot are tired and dilapidated. They give a poor first impression, but don't let it deter you. I had looked online before arriving to see that they were wide open, and so didn't book a tee time. Upon arriving on a Tuesday at 4pm I wondered if they were open. There were about 5 cars in the lot and I assume at least some of those belonged to employees.

The tee was open for me to go out as soon as I'd paid my $30 green fees. I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into at that point. $30 was either great value, or based on my first impression of the facilities, all they could get out of their customers without being accused of theft.

I'm glad I didn't turn around and leave. If you're here for the golf, it's a fantastic round. With the exception of very few areas, the fairways are in great shape. The rough is brown in spots, but it doesn't affect playability, only aesthetics. The greens are in great shape. They would benefit from being rolled firmer, but it had just rained and so my perception may have been skewed, and if they're trying to rehabilitate the course, I can understand leaving the greens soft for now. Layout of the course is fantastic, the best in the area by far, and you can certainly understand how this course was heralded in the past. Great use of elevation and terrain. Playing from the tips I had to use every club in the bag, which is incredibly rare at most modern public courses. Multiple cases where it made sense to tee off with a 3 wood or 3 iron. All the par 5s are reachable in two for me with a good drive, but you'll have to accept significant risk with your 2nd to do so. That's how it should be, risk/reward, not just 'did I smash it hard enough off the tee to bring me within range on my second' like you see at most courses. The only negative I noticed with respect to the course was the sand. Great bunker locations, but they need to work on the sand itself. Was hard-packed with large grain size (pebbles). Otherwise the course itself from the standpoint of quality, thought inducing, skill testing golf, was great. Never saw another single individual on the course through my entire round. Sad from one perspective, but great for the enjoyment of the round. Felt like I owned my own golf course. Walked in 3hrs 10min, and I was in no hurry.

I see a lot of complaints about the carts in previous reviews. Although I walked, the carts appeared brand new, so they are making improvements. Honestly, if they continued to invest in the course and left the facilities as they are, it'd be perfect as I don't go to the course to hang out in the clubhouse, and it'd keep the riffraff away.

If you want an interesting round of golf and can look past the rough edges, the course is great. At $30 to walk on a weekday, I can't think of a better value within 50 miles.

Geat Greens and Fairwys.

Tough course, oong, narrow fairways on some holes. Fairways were in great shape, but the short grass off the fairways are killers!

Trouble trouble trouble

Tricky layout, not much to see of the hole from the tee. Very penal if you miss the fairway, hazards, high rough, trees, houses. Greens a little wet and slow.5 hour round.

Plum Creek on the rise

I have played Plum Creek a few times over the past 20 years, and I've seen the course through some serious ups and downs. Admittedly the course was in pretty bad shape a few years ago - years of tough finances caught up with the course in terms of maintenance and updates. After playing this weekend, however, I'm pleased to say that Plum Creek is back.

The last time I played at Plum Creek I compared it to a backyard that had been well-landscaped at one point but then was left on its own. Things age, fall apart, and need to be maintained. Today you can see that they have invested in the most important area - the golf itself. The fairways and greens are in great shape, and a lot of the railroad tie landscaping that saw its best days in the 80's has been removed. The driving range is better than it was (still not the best first impression) but the practice putting and chipping area is very nice. The cart I had seemed new for 2014. The beverage cart made it through 4 times during my 4 hour 20 minute round, which was just fine. They start you on hole 10, so your last hole is 9. The course plays as it was designed - a challenging track, taking advantage of the unique terrain, nestled in the pines and scrub oak of Douglas County.

Now that the course is functioning well, I'd expect to see some aesthetic and functional improvements down the road. The clubhouse is well maintained but could stand to be updated. The concrete road and parking lot is an adventure in itself - it's been cleaned up, but a re-paving job would certainly make a difference. Sprucing up these areas would help Plum Creek recruit weddings and events. The signs around the course are old and the newer 1-5 plum tee boxes do not match up with the older color-coded ones on the signs. The pro shop has the bare essentials - balls, tees, and a few shirts - but don't expect to find a new set of clubs if you throw your 5 iron in the water on 16, 17, or 18 (a challenging stretch)!

Overall I was pleased to see Plum Creek in good shape again. The staff was attentive and you could tell they were working hard. It's a haul from Denver but it's worth the trip. Tee times were pretty open compared to other courses in the area, and I'd attribute part of that to the location. I'd definitely play Plum Creek again, and I'm going to certainly play it more often.

Nice Shape

Played this course for the first time and thought it was interesting. Pins were in nasty spots and the fairways were built in such a way that your ball almost always rolled off. Normally that wouldn't be a problem but the rough was so long you almost had to drive over your ball to see it. Anyway, I wouldn't mind playing this again if I lived in the area but it's an 80 mile round trip drive so I doubt I'll be back.

Repair Me Please!

Course is in good condition. New carts are great (compared to the previous 'wrecks'). Friendly staff. But starting with the entry near the clubhouse to the cart paths themselves, please repair the 'holes' in the concrete all over the place! These will take their toll on the new carts as well as cars arriving at the club.
Stay on the fairway - the rough is long and lush.

Plum Creek early June

This is the best value in Castle Rock golf. Close in reservations on Golf Now are $55 including cart. I played as a single and finished in just under 3 hours. I believe that rumors that the course is in bankruptcy might be keeping people away. The course is in good shape, greens rolled very true. If you miss some greens on the wrong side you are in a world of trouble as they are elevated and from your ball position you can't even see the putting surface.

CUT THE GREENS

Long shaggy greens....course would be much more attractive if the greens were cut closer. As it is, greens are bumpy and difficult to hold a putt on line.

putting money where it counts

I've read the other reviews, and agree with some. Yes, the course is hurting for money. But in their defense, they are putting the money they have towards the golf course. The course was in great shape. The only drawback was that the greens were slow.
But for those of you bashing the course for paint chipping, or parking lot cracks, go back to your high dollar country clubs and $$$ initiation fees. If you're about golf, this place is worth the trip

Bum creek golf course

Golf shop staff is unorganized and rude. We started on hole #1 and found out on hole four we had started in the middle of 4 foursomes it was here we found out everyone was starting on 10 not 1. We were never told that. At the turn I went in to see if we should continue to the back or play the front again and the staff was rude. The place was packed with grumpy old men EVERYWHERE. Greens were slow and bumpy. Not that nice of a golf course.
