Always a challenge, but this time...

...we played from the tips (black). A lot of fun, but only if:

a) you are bomber with the driver

b) you hit the ball relatively straight

The Quarry's defense is the tightness of its fairways. You're in for a long-ish day if you tend to spray the ball. There's a nearly 400-yard diference between the blues (59ish) and blacks (63ish), so it is a challenge.

But, if you mostly can say "yeah, that's me" to a) and b) above, playing from the blacks is a lot of fun!

As always, staff -- from proshop to starter, to cart girl -- are extremely friendly and seem to be genuinely happy that you picked Quarry Ridge for a round of golf.

Only thing lacking here is a driving range, but Portland West -- and executive course literally two minutes for QR -- has one.

Thank You

I cannot say enough about the upkeep and maintenance at Quarry Ridge, fantastic. John Lucas and Mark Erwin have always been friendly, accommodating and go out of their way to make sure you get the most out of your golfing experience. I've played here for a number of years now and always enjoy the course, especially in the fall. Beautiful pictures waiting to be taken. All of the staff have always been helpful and friendly. I recommend this course to anyone. Some say but it's short, okay, well then you should shoot a low score but rarely is the case except for decent golfers. The price is right. Thanks as always.

Shot makers course, thinking required

Beautifully designed short course with challenging holes due to mostly narrow fairways. Was pleasantly surprised on the picturesque holes and course conditions despite the greens being aerated. With narrow fairways and tight turns, players cannot use their drivers on every par 4. This track can inflict punishment to high handicappers especially if fairways are missed. On top of everything, entire staff is super friendly. Would definitely play again if in the Connecticut area.

UTAS Gang

Actually booked our tee time a week later than when we showed up to play. Even with a charity event going on, the staff sent us out to play on an empty hole. Great bunch of guys!!! Weather was splendid. Course was in great shape. Thanks for the great round Quarry Ridge.

Short but Very Tough

Built in 1993, Quarry Ridge is located in the hills of eastern Portland and is one of three public courses grouped together below and along an old, granite quarry and a ridge line. The course gets its’ name from an abandoned granite quarry that is still visible from the 18th hole. The other nearby courses are: Portland and Portland West, an 18 hole executive course. Of the three, Quarry Ridge has the best views especially when the trees start turning color. Walking is not allowed at Quarry Ridge due to the layout, as you’ll see below. The clubhouse has a full-service pro shop and large restaurant with great food and gorgeous views. There is a putting green behind the clubhouse but no driving range, only a net to hit into.

Course yardages range from 4882 – 5213 – 6049 – 6389 per the score card but the day I played the forward tees were about 4700 and the next (green) about 4900. If you are used to playing from the white tees you will not find them at Quarry Ridge. According to a pro shop employee, about three years ago, the white tees were moved up to just behind the red tees per a vote by the Men’s Club. These essentially became the “senior” tees and the blue tees in effect became the old whites. The senior tee markers are green. On most holes the red and green tees weree two to three yards apart making the course very short from the forward tees. This still does not make it an easy course as you will see below. Anyway, from the blues (old whites) there are four par 3’s and four par 5’s. Per the score card, the par 3’s range from 144-178 yards and the par 5’s range from 447-463 yards. The par fives are short but the course has tight, sloping fairways that make up for lack of distance.

The course is off CT Route 17 and nearby CT Route 66. A winding, uphill driveway empties into the parking lot. Beyond the parking lot is the clubhouse that overlooks the Meshomasic State Forest to the east and the CT River valley to the north. From this vista the fall foliage is beautiful. The 2015 rates include cart fees and are competitive with other, nearby courses. Weekday/holiday rates for 18 holes are $52 regular, $42 senior/junior. Weekends are $57 for anyone. After 1 pm the weekend rate drops to $39. Cart fees are included in all these rates.

This is an extremely challenging course even for advanced players. You really need to keep it straight and on the fairways and never long or off to the sides on many of the greens. You’ll be hitting from numerous side hill and up/down hill lies. The fairways are very tight and bordered by trees, deep rough and rock outcroppings. There are elevated tees and elevated, undulating greens. This is one course that you may need to stash a few extra balls in your bag. So, good luck. Below are some tips.

Hole #3 is a perfect example of why walking is not allowed. After holing out on #2 you’ll need to drive uphill about 200 yards but only after any group on the 3rd tee box hits because you are in their landing zone. Once on the tee box your approach shot should be up the left side of the fairway to the flat green. Hole #4 has one of the few flat fairways. It’s a slight dogleg right with hazards along the left and a pond long and left of the green. Off the tee, aim left of the tree on the right side of the fairway to cut the corner. The ride from the 5th green to the par five 6th is another long drive uphill. Again, you may have to wait while the group in front of you tees off. The 6th starts from an elevated tee box looking down on a large fairway in the valley below. Keep you drive right but not too far right to avoid three bunkers and rough. Your approach shot is to the elevated, two-tier green and all uphill. Don’t miss right or long. Once on the undulating green you’re confronted with a difficult putt. I find this green an optical illusion so check your breaks carefully. #7 is a funky looking hole because a large rock outcropping guards the right side of the fairway about 225 yds out. Both the tee box and green are elevated. Most players’ layup just below the rocks in the valley and take a club or two extra to reach the green. Left of the green is big trouble. #8 is another elevated tee box/green combo with a rock outcropping down the left side. Favor the left side of the fairway and shoot for the mound on the right side of the green. The green is guarded by a bunker short and right.

The backside of the course is just as difficult. The slight dogleg right 10th is drivable for long hitters but the green is protected by two bunkers in front, and steep slope behind and right. #11 has a narrow up-hill fairway with OB right so favor the left side of the fairway all the way to the green. The #1 handicap 12th hole is across the course access road and similar to the 11th. Keep left on the fairway to avoid trouble along the right and behind the green. Sleeping Giant Mountain can be from the 12th green. The 13th is a short par four that tempts you to use driver. Unless you are a straight hitter something less than driver is a smart play as there is trouble long left and right. The 14th is the only true water hole on the course. From an elevated green choose the correct club and stay right or center fairway. #15 is another short par 4 but it has a left sloping fairway and a 2-tier green with a steep slope on the left side. Favor the right with your drive and right center on your approach. #16 is a funky hole. Your tee shot to this blind, elevated green is over a rock outcropping so take one or two clubs more off the tee. There is trouble right and long. The finishing hole has a larger hitting area that cannot be seen from the tee, but don’t go left as it is OB. Your approach shot is downhill to a flat green. The old quarry is off to the left side of the fairway and is protected by a fence. Warning signs are posted all along the left side of the fairway.

Overall the tee boxes were beat up with bare spots and crabgrass but the fairways were in great shape except for more bare spots near the cart paths and greens. This day the greens were quick and very tricky. Pin placement was mostly to the green front so staying below the hole was necessary to avoid three putts. Plus there were not many straight putts. There are only 17 sand traps on the course and all were in excellent condition per my playing partners who landed in them. Finally, the pace of play was very good: 4 hours for a 10 am weekday tee time. The weather was perfect: low 80’s and sunny.

I would recommend this course to better than average players due to the narrow, undulating fairways and tricky greens. It is definitely not for beginners or junior players. It is a good course though to hone you’re driving, approach and wedge accuracy.

Arrogant pro

Played here today on gift certificate from them. it was for 18 holes with cart during the week a $35 or $30 on a weekend. The pro only wanted to reduce the weekend $35 dollar rate by $5 and when I questioned why he became a real jerk telling me it was a mistake by one of his employees and how he was going to find out who did it and give them big trouble. He was incredibly arrogant about it. This seems to be a recurring issue with him since last year we played 9 holes there and the STARTER sent us off the tenth hole. Right after our drive him and his wife and kids came off the ninth hole and he began screaming and I do mean screaming that we could not tee off there so we let him play through but our golf balls disappeared. Unbelievable The course is beautiful but can not understand how the management allows this kind of behavior from a supposed pro.

Quarry ridge- great views and a good challenge

Fairways and greens are in very good shape. This course offers a nice challenge but is doable. Most tee shots need to be on fairway otherwise your in trouble. Cart paths come into play on several holes, which can be good or bad depending on ball bounce. Again a good reason to stay in middle of fairway. The views from several holes are beautiful, particularly in the fall. Overall a nice course and great value when price is under $40.

good value through CTGolfnow.com.

We played 18 holes for just $19 each player. This was a prepaid special. Well worth the money. It was autumn and the maintenance crew did a fabulous job keeping leaves of the fairways. Only challenge was course had many side hill lays. I would go there again.

Quality Public Course

Played here many times at this course always enjoyed the challenging golf course. Staff & amenities are top notch. My only minor flaws are around the turn even during the warmest your outdoor grill and beverage gazebo never occupied. Secondly playing yesterday and I know this is hard....too many leaves and rough should be cut lower...lost too many balls . But overall I will return.

An unmitigated disaster

What do you get when you combine golfers that have no business playing a course of this magnitude, fallen leaves everywhere and a ranger that called in sick? A 5 hour 45 minute round, that's what. This is definitely NOT a course you want to play in the fall, unless you are a scratch golfer,or have nothing better to do with 6 hours of your time. And, don't forget, make sure the ranger is back to work not matter what your handicap is. Hence, zero stars for pace of play

Great course!!

This is a great track, in very good condition. It's probably expensive but I got a Hot Deal which made it cheap. It has lots of challenges, with fairways that run off, many elevation changes and a lot of blind tee shots. For the first time playing it it's very challenging. The only negative was that the guy behind the counter kind of left me on my own, no cart key, no directions, etc. I was just wandering around lugging my bag. Some other person eventually was a huge help, must have been the boss although he was dressed casually. All in all a great round of golf. The tournament was well placed and didn't hold us up till the last 4 holes, and we were a twosome.

A New Favorite

I was looking for a course halfway between my buddies place an where I was staying in CT. After reading favorable reviews on GolfNow, I booked a tee time. Boy, am I glad I did. I'm from Long Island, and there is no shortage of good golf here, but you certainly don't have the elevation and views that you have at Quarry Ridge. The first three holes are ho-hum, but then it slowly ramps up and by the fifth, you are having a ball. The course was in immaculate shape, but there were a few soft spots from a hard rain the previous night. The greens are fast with subtle breaks. Read them from all angles otherwise you will walk away shaking your head. The rough is not long, but if you a off the fairway, you probably have a sidehill lie. Many of the hole are saddle shaped, so if you miss the fairway you often get a favorable bounce. There are lots of blind drives, but the approach shots are right in front of you. The "white tees" are blue, the "blue tees" are the black. Play the up tees unless you are a low single digit, or you know the course like the back of your hand. The staff was professional and friendly. We did not try the restaurant or bar.
We are definitely going back. The views will be unbelievable when the foliage starts to turn.

Could've been 5 Star!!!

Great course, pretty good condition, but HORRIBLE customer service. Arrived as a single, sent to first tee as a single with no person in sight on the course, then rudely TOLD by the marshall I HAD to wait for a threesome, held me on the 1st tee at least 12 mins at which time I could've been on the 2nd green. Turned a planned nice relaxing round into a 4.5 hour round. Still can't figure out why I HAD to wait, especially with no one in sight, I can only assume to save gas on 1 golf cart. On quiet mornings you should ask people if they mind joining up, not TELLING them what they have to do. I played there 2 days prior as a single, sent out as a single, had a pretty clean run in just over 3 hours,. I was planning on bringing two friends up to play the very next day later until this experience, went to Blackledge instead.

Ruined a great day.....

Played last Friday (kind of). When I got there the Pro or Pro shop guy said that we had to wait until our tee time (45 min) to tee off and that we would be going off the back nine as there was an outing going off the front and we would follow them when we made the turn. But we were able to go off the back nine early with the understanding we would have lunch at the turn and then go off the front. So we finished the back and saw that the outing had not started yet so we decided to get in front of them....but then the pro shop guy came out in a cart and said that we had agreed to having lunch 1st and then follow the outing...he said that it just was not working out with us so he said to leave and get a refund.... Through some conversation we found that outing was a shotgun and seeing as they had not started yet it would have been a 5 HOUR+ wait..annoyed would be an understatement... if we knew up front that there had been an error in giving us a tee time then we would have gone someplace else...but that did not happen and the pro shop guy had a big attitude...So bottomline is I will never go back there and I caution all on the playing at this place as the Pro Shop guy is not to be trusted.
